Ok, after having delicious dinner and tons of wine at my friends' house, my other friend (who just moved to town) was lured into a bar with live music on our way home, and we drank EVEN MORE WINE...and now it is EVEN LATER...and um...yeah, so let's see how much of this episode I can remember, and how coherent I am...

First off, it was awesome! I loved it, and I can't wait to watch it again.

Second off, DAMN YOU WRITERS! YOU'VE COMPLETELY F*CKED UP THE TIMELINE!!! UUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

But I'll get to that...where did we start?

Oh yeah, digging through the Campbell library. I have to wonder who looked after all that stuff when Samuel was dead - the cousins? Brothers? I know a lot of Mary's family was killed (as Sam discovered in S3 - maybe just everyone who knew about Mary?) Anyway...the point is, there's a library under the floor of the Campbell compound, and it is awesome.

Let me just say, I LOVE how they dramatized research. I forget the line now of course, but the fact that them finding a secondary search term was a dramatic point was AWESOME. Also, how geeked out Sam and Dean got when Sam found Samuel Colts journal! HISTORY NERDS FTW! How come no one ever put all my historical research to music and gave me dramatic lighting? I guess Public Opinion in the Aftermath of the Easter Rising just isn't as thrilling...

Anyway, I hope they brought all those books back to Bobby's house. There's a wealth of information there.

Turns out Samuel Colt supposedly killed a Phoenix, so Dean's solution for finding Phoenix ashes? Go back in time!

I love how happy Dean is...I love the whole "you have a fetish" speech...aw, I can hear the keys of many a slash fan tapping...

I like how Sam thinks he looks stupid, but Dean is just all thrilled that he gets to cosplay as Clint Eastwood, and fully believes that he's authentic.

Oh, I skipped a bit (see, too much wine) RACHEL! I actually like that she got all up in their business about only talking to Cas when they need something - though, to be fair, if they called him to just hang out, I think that might be more disrespectful to the fact that he's currently fighting a war. And they've already told him that if he needs anything, all he has to do is ask.

Oh oh! And the conversation where Dean mentions Star Trek IV and Sam and Bobby don't know what he's talking about - and Bobby's only watched Deep Space 9! BOBBY, NOOO!!! Deep Space 9 was the WORST ONE...uh, ok, I'm not actually sure about that, because I lost interest, but the point is that I didn't like it (ETA: Well, now I feel like a tool, according to SuperWiki, Jim Beaver's late wife was on Deep Space 9...I'm sure she was lovely on it, but I still didn't like the show...sigh). Anywho, how is it that Dean knows about Star Trek IV and Sam doesn't? I thought those guys lived their whole lives together? Maybe Dean only got into Star Trek while Sam was at Stanford? Weird, that's all I'm saying.

Ok, where was I? They get zapped back to the past, and I loved how they had Sam almost say "shit" - I have a think for swearing on TV, so sue me. It was a horrible tease.

And the first thing the locals in the past do (after hanging some dude) is criticize Dean's "blanket" outfit...and my goodness, Dean gets all pouty and disappointed and it really should be illegal for someone to look that adorable...it does things to me, and I'm not used to things being done to me.

They go to the Sheriff to ask after Sam Colt, and I love how even people in the past think that they are gay! Ah the past, it is just like today, only with less history. "We're looking for a man" "I bet." - brilliant. Also brilliant is the comment on how clean his shirt is, and Dean's response of "it's not as clean as it looks."

They're directed to the saloon where I KNOW SOMEONE! That's right., one of those whores was a friend of mine. Hahaha...I believe she'd probably prefer to be referred to as "costumed extra" but we referred to her as "surprised whore #2" the whole night. Thankfully, NOT The whore with bad teeth and herpes.

Again, Dean ordering the whiskey and a girl drink for Sam and having it backfire was brilliant. As was how repulsive the "saloon girl" was....and I'm pretty sure Dean's reaction to her did nothing to change the mind of the judge about Dean, when he came in for his appointment and saw Dean recoiling like that. Not that it matters, because he certainly doesn't stay alive long.

At first I thought that it was a pretty fast turn around for an angry spirit, and then I put it together and realized that this was Supernatural - ALL MONSTERS ASSUME HUMAN FORM (because humans are cheaper than CGI). So in the Supernatural Universe, Phoenixes are humanoid. Awesome. I want to be one...I'll be just like The Doctor from Doctor Who only with more FIRE! That is basically just making an awesome thing even more awesome.

Sam takes off to find Samuel Colt to get the gun to kill the Phoenix, and Dean sticks around to join the "posse" to hunt the Phoenix. I love all Dean's "posse" jokes...and his suggestion for the t-shirt! Hahah, who wants to bet that there will be a ton of homemade "I love posse" shirts at Supernatural conventions in our immediate future?

"That poor horse" - also an excellent line, as Sam clumsily takes off to find Sam Colt.

There's a lot of characters named Samuel in this show.

Anyway...

The posse doesn't show and the Sheriff dies...and Dean becomes the new Sheriff! Yay!

Meanwhile, Mr. Colt takes out two demons, and then Sam shoes up and just comes straight out with the truth. "My name is Sam Winchester and I'm a hunter from the year 2011" and I  SCREAM INSIDE!! BECAUSE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU ARE A FUCKING HUNTER FROM THE YEAR 2012 YOU MOTHER  FUCKER! YOU ARE MESSING UP THE TIMELINE! DAMN YOU SUPERNATURAL WRITERS! YOU CAN'T ADD A YEAR TO THE TIMELINE AND  THEN JUST IGNORE IT?!?!! WHAT THE HELL! WHEN DID THIS MYTHICAL YEAR THAT DEAN SPENT WITH LISA AND BEN TAKE  PLACE?!!?! HUH? IN SOME SORT OF SIDE-UNIVERSE?!!!? OUTSIDE TIME?!?? IN THE TARDIS?!?? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!?? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?

So, Sam show him his fancydancy phone to prove that he comes from the future. And Colt believes him, because he's a BAMFHunter like that. Except he still won't help...even after Sam shows him his own diary that says that he shot the phoenix. And of course, we had to ask "why didn't Sam just prove he was the future by showing him the diary in the first place?" But of course, we find out later it's because the phone is an IMPORTANT object to be left behind! Which makes me feel marginally better, but the whole time through that scene, I kept thinking "don't forget your phone, Sam", "Get the phone back", "Are you forgetting your phone?", "what about the phone?"...so that was a little bit annoying, but maybe if I wasn't hyper conscious of the whereabouts of my own and everyone else's possessions at all times , it wouldn't have annoyed me quite so much.

ETA: Oh, forgot to mention - I love Colt's line about "a giant from the future" and on a more serious note, I love how Colt underestimates Sam based on his age. It was a nice touch.

ETA (Again): The "Candygram for Mongo" line from Blazing Saddles was EXCELLENT! One of my favourite movies ever, just saying.

Dean looks the final intended Phoenix victim in prison to use as bait...and the Phoenix shows up and informs Dean that the dude is actually a mother fucker who deserves what's coming to him. I don't really like the fact that Dean was insistent that he still had to kill the Phoenix regardless just because he was a monster/not-human. Didn't Dean learn in S2 that his anti-nonhuman tendencies weren't always right...you know, in that episode where they let those "good" vampires go?! So, yeah, that kind of cheesed me off a bit...I mean, at least tell the dude that you're sorry, but you really need his ashes. Or better yet, isn't the guy a Phoenix? Does he not leave ashes everytime you kill him? Could you not light him on fire and then gather the ashes before he regenerates? Or does he regenerate from the ashes USING the ashes so that there's nothing left over?! Am I thinking too hard about this?! I blame the wine.

I do like how the Phoenix just shoots the dude in the chest, and Dean comments how he didn't even think of that (I forget the exact line, but it was good.)

And then he draws him out in a gun fight, just as Sam shows up with the Colt - but sadly, because of Dean's determination to get that final pop culture reference in they're too slow to gather the ashes....

BUT WAIT!

MEANWHILE  IN THE YEAR 2011 2012 YOU BASTARDS!  Castiel meets up with his trusty freshly introduced lieutenant (Canadians say "Left-tenant" I do not know why) and she TAKES HIM TO TASK! Because apparently Castiel has been up to SHENANIGANS! BAD SHENANIGANS! HE HAS BECOME SOMETHING BAD! She tries to STAB HIM! And she does, but not deep enough, and he TAKES HER  OUT LIKE A BAMF...but he's REALLY SAD ABOUT IT. And SHE HAS REALLY PRETTY WINGS YOU GUYS! REALLY FUCKING PRETTY WINGS! (I am swearing all over this mother fucking review tonight folks, my sincerest apologies).  I LIKE HER BASED ON HER PRETTY WINGS ALONE AND NOW SHE IS DEAD.

Castiel goes to Bobby's place and puts up a ward against angels! Guys! You can WARD AGAINST ANGELS IN BLOOD AND NOT JUST WEIRD ULTRA VIOLET WRITING!

I'm getting off topic and too capitally....

Castiel passes out onto Bobby...awww....hugs! (Shut-up, being held up while you are unconscious totally counts as hugs).

When Castiel wakes up, there are jumper cables in the background - this, according to Guy Bee (the director) is because they CUT OUT A SCENE! I'm assuming that Castiel's heart stopped beating and Bobby used jumper cables as a defibrillator.

Castiel tells Bobby that he's too weak to get the boys back because of the whole being stabbed thing. Bobby's like "oh noes! ma boys - I wantz dem!" (because Bobby talks like lolcats when I've had too much wine)....and Castiel is like "I can get them back if you let me....touch it." And a new ship is born...Bobby/Cas! What shall we call it? Nothing can beat Sassy. Bostiel? Cabby? (I'm joking people, please do not write this.)

Bobby says fine, Castiel can leech power from his soul in order to get the boys back, because "we can't leave them stranded in Deadwood" - AWESOME! (because Jim Beaver was in Deadwood, you guys.....it's funny because Jim Beaver was in....ok, I'll stop.)

So Castiel gives Bobby a soul-fisting, and brings the boys back...and they're all pissed off that they didn't get the ashes. Dean wants to be sent back, but Castiel says "I don't want to have to do that again."....and I wonder if he means to Bobby, for the boys, or if he means in general...it makes me wonder if the bad things that Castiel has been doing is leeching power off souls....and it's wrong and whatnot. Meanwhile, Bobby feels like it'll take him a decade to recover. Do souls regenerate power they've lost?  Poor Bobby and Cas.

But never fear, because Sam Winchester keeps his contact list SO UP TO DATE that it has Bobby's address in it! And Mr. Colt found the address before the batteries wore out while "searching for service"  (nothing uses up a cell phone's batteries quite like "searching for service" - take it from someone who lives in Canada, where there are large stretches of the country that are not covered by cell phone towers).

So, just like Back to the Future II..., Sam Winchester gets a package at Bobby's...surprisingly ON THE VERY DAY he gets back. I guess his phone retained the date too even when it was out of range? It's either that or they really were 150 years exactly in the past, in which case I've at least got a month and day for the timeline, even if it is the WRONG FRICKIN' YEAR! UGH!

And it's the ASHES! YAY!

Somehow though, I have a feeling Sam and Dean are still going to fail miserably at killing the Mother of All Evil though...just a hunch....

NOW A NOTE ABOUT COATS: *DROOL* SKHFKDLHGIDLHGIDLHFIHWLNVIVKh SO GORGEOUS AND GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL AND AND...I have to agree with Dean - he looked good. I wish they had done Sam ll up properly too instead of leaving him in his regular coat.

Ok, let me know what I missed, or what your favorite part was...or that I should swear and drink less next week (or swear and drink more?)

The line you are looking for is "Wow, I should'a seen that comin'"

My quibble is the courier service - how did Colt know that one would still be in business?

And I am with you on the whole ganking the Big Bad - the boys are going to get their rear ends handed to them, at least until the season finale. :-)

Yes! Awesome.

Very true. I guess he just took a gamble.

The boys plans really never work out well for them. I just hope that they don't get their asses handed to them TOO badly... :P

Dean found Samuel Colt's journal, not Sam. ;)

How come no one ever put all my historical research to music and gave me dramatic lighting?

LOL I often wish my life was a movie, too....if only for the background music. *g*

Great review, as always and loads of fun.

Oops! I blame the booze. :P Whoever found it, they were both adorably excited! I loved it.

Maybe I should start pretending that my life IS set to dramatic music in a montage somewhere - that'll keep me interesting ;)

Funny, because at the end of the episode (I will also blame booze), I was thinking "Very dramatic, Dean. You're going to look a bit like a fool when 'in real life', the scene doesn't cut to credits, but just kind of keeps going on awkwardly."

HAHAHAHA *awkward*

There was a time in my teenage years where I'd make dramatic exits - then find myself in another room with absolutely no reason to be there and nothing to do, but not being able to go back to where I wanted to be, because it'd ruin the dramatic effect. :P

I always like to read you're review after watching the show. I liked the music on this one (keep waiting for a chorus of 'Rangoooooo' though XD) and all in all I laughted a lot.
Also, on the phoenix being like a Doctor Who, you had me wondering on the effect the Colt would have the Doctor...

Glad you liked my drunk/tired review, haha.

It was my understanding that if you killed the Doctor quickly enough, not giving him time to regenerate, than he'd die...so, the Colt could kill him, but so could any other well aimed bullet. At least, in my understanding.

Oh, that would have been perfect (music cue). Now, I'm so disappointed that it wasn't in there. I wonder if it was a rights issue and the amount of time they had?

I can't believe with all of the Clint tributes, they didn't think of the musical sting, too. It "Whooo-oooo-whooo" whistle definitely should have played when Dean and Phoenix had their showdown/face-off.

Great review and keep up the swearin'!! XD I am also miffed about the timeline but I have been properly distracted by handsome men in cowboy gear and tons of references to my favorite Back to the Future movie, and that is number 3, my friends.

Love your reviews, my dear <333

Yeah, I was still a little sad that Dean had to kill the phoenix guy even though he wasn't evil. But he was thinking of the 'greater good' I guess. And Finch had killed 2 guys that MAY have not known he was innocent-it was only the 3rd guy there when the wife was shot, so they could have believed their friend...

I am also upset at the timeline issue. They say 1 yr passed, but they aren't being consistent about that. If they want to keep saying 2011, then they should have made Dean stay with Lisa for a few months only.

Date: 2011-04-23 08:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
It's a good point about the Phoenix killing two men who may not have known he was innocent.

And yeah, the timeline thing really pisses me off. I LIKE the fact that Dean spent a whole year with Lisa (and we needed that whole year for the narrative/character-arcs to make sense), I just wish that the writers had realized that it meant that the show was a year ahead of reality! Sigh.

Anyway, my season 6 timeline is going to be a bit f*cked up now. I'm going to have to decide how I want to play this - stay true to the dialogue, and have Dean's year with Lisa be a mythical pocket of time somewhere in 2010, or say "screw you" to the writers and add a year to all dates mentioned so that it actually makes sense for the narrative of the story...decisions...

Write a mini-fic in the timeline about how the Doctor got involved and there was wibbly-wobbly time-y wimey so that dean BOTH spent a year with Lisa and also just 4 months?

Haha, maybe I'll just have to...do you think it was Ten or Eleven? I'd go with Ten - he is the same angst level as Supernatural.

But 11 bumbling around would be a lot more amusing because of the tone difference. He could show up because the boys are supposed to be working 2011, but something's gone terribly wrong with the timeline. And he feels a bit sorry for Dean thinking his brother is dead. So he just...bumps things up a little. Perhaps by taking "1 year" Dean/Lisa/Ben back in time 8 months (they did move to a different house!). And maybe the Sams.

Yes.

Oh, noes! So much to comment on.

You're doing wine, I'm doing Irish Coffee.

Second, it was an awesome episode and I was surprised how much I really enjoyed it. It had the jokey aspects I'm not usually fond of and time travel, which I'm also not a big fan of. But, I *really* liked this one. Why is Jensen so damned charming?

The library... I kept thinking "Giles would love to go through this place" ... ah, my Buffy-centric brain. Then I remembered that Giles was killed and I quickly re-focused on the episode.

Research drama --- with you. I loved how the business of looking stuff up wasn't just slid over this time. And, the Colt diary was a neat plot point.

I also really liked how all of Dean's romantic views of the 'old west' from the movies were shot down one by one. (I also thought the title sequence was awesome.)

I don't know why I love when Dean is made fun of, but I do. I think it's the Jensen magic again. He seems to have fun making fun of his own character, too.

I wish we had gotten to know Rachel a little in previous episodes. I hate when they introduce a character that we're told has been around, but we only meet them in time for them to die. It's annoying.

I really liked the whole Phoenix part of the story. Although, I kind of was on the "monster's" side on this one. I kind of wanted him to get his revenge and to escape instead of ending up deaded.

I loved the serape (sp?) joke. If you know Clint Eastwood's movies, you'll recognize this as a nod of the head to Dean's love of Clint's spaghetti westerns featuring "The Man with No Name". He was always dressed in one of these, which worked because it was Clint effing Eastwood. It's struck my funny bone that everyone was basically telling Dean that he wasn't 'macho enough' to pull it off.

I also really liked the not-very-sly references to Castiel touch Bobby's 'it'. In fact, lately, it seems the writers are having a field day with the slash fans/embracing the slash readings of their series, which is far more awesome than past episodes that seemed mean spirited.

I really like Cas' issues with whatever steps he's taking to win the war. I'm wondering if this series will end with Castiel falling to Earth as a mortal in penance for what he's done for The Kingdom. I also like Rachel spotlighting it, but all I could think during her last scene with Cas was "this should be Anna". (Yes, I know she is already killed - I'm just saying, this should be a character we were familiar with.)

I really appreciated the wrap up with the phone being returned to Sam via delivery service, as that was really bugging me throughout the episode.

Onto comments to see what everyone else thinks!
From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
They killed Giles!!?!?! *shrug*

Jensen really does sell Dean being made fun of. Usually I don't like people being made fun of, but Jensen just does those faces so well...seriously, the pout after them making fun of his "blanket" was perhaps the most adorable face I have ever seen a grown man make.

It would have been cool if it were Anna and not Rachel - except that I think if Castiel killed Anna (pretending that The Song Remains The Same never happened), it'd be unforgivable - or at least spell out how far Castiel has "fallen" from his ideals in far greater detail. Because he killed someone we don't know, we can still rationalize it a little more - even though we really shouldn't - ah psychology.

Sometimes I worry that the writers are making it too easy for the slash fans...but then I think "heck, it's fun."

Anyway, I agree with everything else you said too!

They killed Giles!!?!?! *shrug*

1)This episode: Hell yeah.
2) The boys as cowboys: double hell yeah.
3)The boys solving a case in the Old West: AWESOME.

Other thoughts- so was this the first episode where we've seen Dean actually, unreservedly happy/excited since, oh, Monster Movie? Because it certainly feels like it. They should do more episodes where Dean is so openly, innocently happy. I know, I know, it'd conflict with the angst and he's very good at that too. But it made ME happy, so that's got to count. (Also, was the camera in love with him or what?)

Dean's decision to kill the monster didn't really bother me. I mean, it did a little, but considering that from Dean's perspective, it already happened, and that the guy had murdered two basically innocent people in his revenge on the 3rd (who actually committed the crime.) Well...I guess I was enjoying everything else too much to worry.

Aaaand the show really hates you. I told you it was trying to kill you. Join me in ret-conning the "year" into "a summer that felt like a year". It'd make more sense, anyway. Sort of. I mean, for Samuel to have suspicions about Sam but not have acted on them, for Bobby to know Sam was back and not tell Dean ("you were out" and other silly explanations nonewithstanding.)

Hm. Also, I think Sam should have told Colt to get off his ass and make more bullets, since apparently you can now change the past and certainly, their lives would have been a lot easier if they'd had the colt and its 100 special bullets. ;) Also, Sam gave dean the Colt! I was happy to see it, can't exactly explain why, but it did make me wonder why Dean gets all the "I'm going to shoot evil in the face!" glory. And Dean was very happy to see it. It's almost like he didn't either leave it in the trunk of his car or perhaps in a cemetery and forget about it.

Dean really should be happy all the time, it's a joy to watch...but that'd be a very different show. Still, it's nice to have it occasionally. Just think of how long it had been BEFORE Monster Movie (besides faking it during the death-sentence-year.)

Yeah, Dean's decision to kill the monster doesn't bother me either...I just wish he had framed his reasoning better. Not "it's because you're a monster" but "It's because you killed two innocent people and I need your ashes to save the world, sorry dude."

The show does hate me, even though I love it so very much. My probably is that I actually LIKE the idea that it was a whole year...but hey, maybe you're right and it should just be four months...or some sort of time-pocket. Ugh. I just don't know how I'm going to notate it on the timeline...I can still do months, seasons, days etc...but the year is going to have to be optional or something...

Ruby showed them how to make more bullets in the future, so they don't actually need Samuel Colt to make them. And technically they didn't change the past - every time the Winchesters have gone back to the past, it's actually been a closed loop paradox, in that they were ALWAYS meant to go back to the past. Samuel Colt didn't kill a Phoenix in 1861 without Sam around, he wouldn't have even known about the Phoenix...he just wrote that he did because Sam needed to see it in the future in order to know to come back...it's a paradox yeah, but technically something is "meant to be" unlike the unsinking of the Titanic in the previous episode.

I do wonder what happened to the Colt in the future though...did they lose it in that cemetery when they failed to kill Luci?

Date: 2011-04-24 02:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com
The Winchesters haven't changed the past, but the second time they went back in time it was only due to archangel clean-up services they didn't, and then Balthazar successfully changed the past too. I know ruby made it so it didn't need the bullets or...something, but I was thinking more along the lines of when they first had it.

It would have been worth a try. Or at least, you'd think Sam would complain about it. "13? Really, 13? Do you hate us, or what?" ;) And the line Colt had about wielding it being a curse...was interesting. WIsh they could have elaborated.

The colt: apparently not...ish. Dean had it in his hand apparently, even while unconscious. But whether or not he lost it, threw it away in a fit, or stashed it in the trunk...this is the first time it's really been mentioned.

Yeah, but even the archangel clean-up services had always happened, because that's where Mary got her line about "angels watching over you" - since before the archangel clean-up services, she didn't believe in angels. So, still a closed-loop.

I wish they had elaborated on the curse line too.

And man, I mean, just because a Colt can't kill Lucifer isn't any reason to retire it completely! Very odd. Especially since they keep using the knife, which is considerably less effective.

Exactly! And we all know Dean likes shooting things with it.

Hi you!
I liked a lot about this episode, but I was a bit disappointed in it as well. Not even THOUGHT about the timeline until reading your ramble..

Also, how geeked out Sam and Dean got when Sam found Samuel Colts journal! HISTORY NERDS FTW!
Wasn't it Dean who found it? All happy and nerdy and triumphant? I loved him in that situation.

and Sam and Bobby don't know what he's talking about - and Bobby's only watched Deep Space 9! BOBBY, NOOO!!! Deep Space 9 was the WORST ONE...uh, ok, I'm not actually sure about that, because I lost interest, but the point is that I didn't like it
Hee. I admit, I watched it. I had a thing for the Doctor and I think him and O'Brian was the first possibly-slash-couple on TV. So adorable.
But the STORY was boring, I give you that.
I didn't know Jim's wife was on DS-9 O.O (ok, checked for it. I'm glad that I wasn't meant to actually RECOGNIZE her *laughs*)

Anywho, how is it that Dean knows about Star Trek IV and Sam doesn't? I thought those guys lived their whole lives together?
I'd go with: while Dean has trouble keeping dates, history and such thing in his memory, but has no problems to know TV-trivia (I mean, seriously, who'd recognize "footsoldier10" or something as the supposedly dead crew-man just from a photo? Really, what a geek *g*). Sam just doesn't bother with trivia, while he's good at keeping the facts of history and such straight. It's the same with me: if I'm interested in something (like Star Wars, Star Trek (I was a Trekki, yes, now hit me) and Supernatural), I keep it nearly forever in my head. But ask me about the questions I had to answer in my final exam? Like, a really, really important one, for which I studied ages for??? Yeah. Blank. Like Dean with history, or Sam with (for him) unimportant details.

Dean gets all pouty and disappointed and it really should be illegal for someone to look that adorable...it does things to me, and I'm not used to things being done to me.
Oh damn, he was so adorable. Not only there, but all over. Made me hate it and love it in not-exactly equal measures.

They go to the Sheriff to ask after Sam Colt, and I love how even people in the past think that they are gay! Ah the past, it is just like today, only with less history. "We're looking for a man" "I bet." - brilliant.
Oh? I never took it as gay-reference. I thought, well, that it'd be obvious that they were looking for a man, because what else would they be looking for in the Sheriff's office? But ok, I'm clearly too innocent :-D

I loved the fun with the saloon-girl and the whiskey. I think it was pretty obvious that that would happen, or maybe it was just me? SO it was funny, but so predictable that I didn't enjoy it as much as I could've.

Oh, wasn't the judge also the judge from "Picket Fences"? And the bartender? He was named "Elkins"!!! There is no way that wasn't meant as a tie-in with Dead Man's Blood! I imagine bartender-Elkins witnessed the killing of the Phoenix or maybe even picked up the colt afterwards and the secret/colt was from then on passed on through the generations to finally end in a cabin and stolen by vampires.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU ARE A FUCKING HUNTER FROM THE YEAR 2012 YOU MOTHER FUCKER! YOU ARE MESSING UP THE TIMELINE!

*laughs*
Poor you. Maybe Sam doesn't remember that it's actually 2012? Like he lost the memory and thinks now that it's still 2011? After all, the newspapers and such aren't helping him over that misconception *wink*

Oh, forgot to mention - I love Colt's line about "a giant from the future" and on a more serious note, I love how Colt underestimates Sam based on his age. It was a nice touch.
I loved Colt. He was smart and cool and had great reflexes and he was funny in his own way. I think, btw, the Journal only ever said: "the Colt killed a Phoenix in Sunrise, WY", not that actually Samuel Colt killed the Phoenix. Funny...

So, yeah, that kind of cheesed me off a bit...I mean, at least tell the dude that you're sorry, but you really need his ashes.

NO! That was one of the reasons - maybe the biggest - this episode didn't sit right with me. I KNOW Dean has more compassion than that. Why did they make him such an uncaring bastard, or well, why not do something more in the compassion-department for Dean. It's... weird. Hell, he had compassion for MEG. Why not for the Phoenix? I 'could' imagine he might have been extra-slow to let the Phoenix shoot the bad guy, but I'm not really buying that either.

And yeah, I wondered too about the Phoenix, and why they needed to destroy it. I think it's because if you took his ashes, there would be a flaw in the next Phoenix (maybe a finger missing, or even more important things) - it's after all said that they "rise from the ashes", so I guess it means that they need ALL the ashes.

But I'm still sad for the Phoenix.

When Castiel wakes up, there are jumper cables in the background - this, according to Guy Bee (the director) is because they CUT OUT A SCENE! I'm assuming that Castiel's heart stopped beating and Bobby used jumper cables as a defibrillator.
Oh, I was wondering about that. I thought maybe Bobby had been working on something, like an engine, but it didn't make any sense...

Nothing can beat Sassy. Bostiel? Cabby? (I'm joking people, please do not write this.)

You are more than amusing when tipsy! *laughs*
And yes, please, don't write it. There are way too many ships already...

"we can't leave them stranded in Deadwood" - AWESOME!
Totally awesome! Even I got that reference...

So Castiel gives Bobby a soul-fisting,
Oh BLAGH!!!
Did you need to put that image in my head??? Seriously... *runs off to look for brain-bleach*

So Castiel gives Bobby a soul-fisting, and brings the boys back...
And I wanted to crawl all over Dean and kiss him, alone from the awesomely-cute hat-hair!

So my favorite part was the beginning (or I guess also the end) where Dean was seen standing all High Noon-ish in the street. His FACE under the hat... *thuds*

And the geeky-Dean.

And knowing a little bit more about why the souls are so important.

I think you are adorable when drunk, so I wouldn't mind you drinking again next episode *smirks*

See ya then, and thanks for making me like this episode better than i did before...

Sigh, we're agreed on Dean and the Phoenix then. A blight on an otherwise great episode.

Hahaha, sorry about the "soul-fisting" comment. This is why I don't want people to write "Cabby" - brain bleach would be needed.

Dean looked AMAZING this entire episode.

I'm glad you think I'm adorable while drunk :P I can't promise the same for next week - my poor liver...but we'll see. ;)

Yes, Dean does find the journal. I misremembered. I blame the booze.

The Doctor and O'Brien weren't the first slashy-couple on TV, but they may have been the first for YOU. There have been many epic bromances before them...Kirk and Spock spring to mind.

Good point about the possibility that Sam just doesn't remember sci-fi movies like Dean does. It could also be one of those cases where it was on when they were in some motel somewhere - and Dean was watching it raptly, but Sam was reading a book or researching or working on school-work and wasn't paying attention. When I was a kid, that movie seemed to be on TV a lot, and I'm the same age as Sam and Dean (neatly between their two ages).

Yes, I think the bartender Elkins was a tie-in to Hunter Elkins. He may have gotten the Colt that way, but he still needed the bullets...so, I'm assuming Colt came to town looking for his gun, and perhaps gave Elkins the bullets? Or maybe they struck up a friendship? Or maybe they were already friends? So many possibilities...

The timeline is going to be the death of me. I'm going to do a post about it after I finish responding to your comments...

I think, btw, the Journal only ever said: "the Colt killed a Phoenix in Sunrise, WY", not that actually Samuel Colt killed the Phoenix. Funny...

And we get another neat closed time loop, where Sam has ALWAYS gone back in time and spoken to Colt, and Colt has written in the diary so that Sam will know to come back in time and speak to Colt....ah paradoxes, how clever you are.

Oh, I found another nail for your "screwed timeline" coffin. In the very beginning, just after the title card - they not only showed us the title saying it's 48h earlier, but also 150 years later.. 1861 + 150 = 2011.. So it might not have been just because it looks better than 151 years later, but actual 150 years in the future and then depending on that date situation - maybe 48h earlier making it 3rd March?

Later in of of your comment replies you write: "Samuel Colt didn't kill a Phoenix in 1861 without Sam around,[..] he just wrote that he did because Sam needed to see it in the future in order to know to come back."

And I am completely sure, that Colt actually never wrote that HE killed the Phoenix. He wrote that "gun" killed a phoenix. I would have thought that if he was the one holding the gun, he might have written something more, at least the fact that he was the one who did it.

Oh, we saw how 3 of the 13 bullets got used! And 5 were used in "our time".. So it's only 5 more we don't know, or we do?

When Castiel wakes up, there are jumper cables in the background - this, according to Guy Bee (the director) is because they CUT OUT A SCENE! I'm assuming that Castiel's heart stopped beating and Bobby used jumper cables as a defibrillator.
I hope that you are right on that account, and that even if you aren't we still see that scene someday, somehow. Or at least learn what is going on there. But thanks for the info!

But I so love the fact that this is one those episode where you cant decide on one favourite part. As you name one - you think of another and another.. most of all I loved the fact that this was such an episode, where you are happy to let many strange things go (like that bit where Colt got name, date, address from a magic brick and that the package arrived).
And are just happy with the boys and the wild west in the second half of 19th century..

And keep up with the great reviews! Love them :)

Ugh, I know, I noticed the 150 title after the fact too. They're really screwing me up on this one. I'm about to do a post about it, after I finish replying to all my these comments.

Also, it can't be the March 3rd, because I'm pretty sure the last episode was April 29th! SIGH...maybe it wasn't...maybe time doesn't exist anymore, and it's all a big ball of timey-whimey-wibbly-wobbly-stuff.

Good point about Colt not saying that HE actually did it.

Counting bullets...let's see...ones we've seen: 2 used by Colt. 1 used by Sam on Phoenix. 1 used by John on Vamp. 2 use by Dean on Demon and YED. 1 used by Sam on YED!John. Did Sam fire one in the house and have it miss the YED? I can't remember. Anyway, that's at least 7 we've seen. 5 of which were used by Winchesters. So, there are 6 unaccounted for? Or am I crazy? Maybe Sam did miss once, and you're right with 5.

I'm hoping that's going to be a deleted scene on the DVDs or something. It looks like it could have been entertaining.

Yeah, I'm happy to let the whole "magic brick with address and date" thing go, because it's so clearly part of a tribute to Back to the Future 2, that the logic needn't make sense.

Glad you like the reviews!!

Since the canon is supposed to be what gets aired, them I guess you are right that it cant be march 3rd. But i have read somewhere that the episodes 17 and 18 were switched like last year ( valentine and dead men ). So on one hand you could say that this is one reason why 150 years later doesn't work. But as always -> if they air it them that is either the truth and canon or something they apologize for and we decide to drop it (like with Sam's college years).

Yep. Maybe Sam getting saved from hell completelly destroyed time and space continuum. And they have not yet noticed that because of some freaky spell or time monster. ;)

as for the bullet, I would have to check, but I feel rather sure that he did shoot that one and miss YED. But on this point I'm not ready to argue.

It's impossible to not like what you write :)

Swear and drink more because again you are my brain twin and say ALL THE THINGS I was thinking.

Maybe not Cabby.

I think we deserve to see the coat in future episodes. That take place IN THE FUTURE. Not in the year that never was.

Haha, done and done. At the very least, it will educate people about how fun I am to hang out with while drunk ;)

I don't think anyone wants to think about Cabby.

And yes! I would love to see Dean in the duster in the future! It probably won't happen though. According to Jensen though, he got to keep a copy of the coat...so, hey, maybe we'll see Jensen in it. ;)

(psst... you're fun to hang out with even while not drunk....

Then again I'm currently drunk, so I may shoot you over the side of a boat anyway [Stewie Griffin reference].

Wait....

Didn't Spike (aka James Marsters) also keep a copy of the long coat?

Oh, right... you didn't watch Buffy. Sorry.

{Not really, or I wouldn't bother posting... ;-) )
