NO! That was one of the reasons - maybe the biggest - this episode didn't sit right with me. I KNOW Dean has more compassion than that. Why did they make him such an uncaring bastard, or well, why not do something more in the compassion-department for Dean. It's... weird. Hell, he had compassion for MEG. Why not for the Phoenix? I 'could' imagine he might have been extra-slow to let the Phoenix shoot the bad guy, but I'm not really buying that either.
And yeah, I wondered too about the Phoenix, and why they needed to destroy it. I think it's because if you took his ashes, there would be a flaw in the next Phoenix (maybe a finger missing, or even more important things) - it's after all said that they "rise from the ashes", so I guess it means that they need ALL the ashes.
But I'm still sad for the Phoenix.
When Castiel wakes up, there are jumper cables in the background - this, according to Guy Bee (the director) is because they CUT OUT A SCENE! I'm assuming that Castiel's heart stopped beating and Bobby used jumper cables as a defibrillator. Oh, I was wondering about that. I thought maybe Bobby had been working on something, like an engine, but it didn't make any sense...
Nothing can beat Sassy. Bostiel? Cabby? (I'm joking people, please do not write this.)

So my favorite part was the beginning (or I guess also the end) where Dean was seen standing all High Noon-ish in the street. His FACE under the hat... *thuds*
And the geeky-Dean.
And knowing a little bit more about why the souls are so important.
I think you are adorable when drunk, so I wouldn't mind you drinking again next episode *smirks*
