Yes, Dean does find the journal. I misremembered. I blame the booze.
The Doctor and O'Brien weren't the first slashy-couple on TV, but they may have been the first for YOU. There have been many epic bromances before them...Kirk and Spock spring to mind.
Good point about the possibility that Sam just doesn't remember sci-fi movies like Dean does. It could also be one of those cases where it was on when they were in some motel somewhere - and Dean was watching it raptly, but Sam was reading a book or researching or working on school-work and wasn't paying attention. When I was a kid, that movie seemed to be on TV a lot, and I'm the same age as Sam and Dean (neatly between their two ages).
Yes, I think the bartender Elkins was a tie-in to Hunter Elkins. He may have gotten the Colt that way, but he still needed the bullets...so, I'm assuming Colt came to town looking for his gun, and perhaps gave Elkins the bullets? Or maybe they struck up a friendship? Or maybe they were already friends? So many possibilities...
The timeline is going to be the death of me. I'm going to do a post about it after I finish responding to your comments...
I think, btw, the Journal only ever said: "the Colt killed a Phoenix in Sunrise, WY", not that actually Samuel Colt killed the Phoenix. Funny...
And we get another neat closed time loop, where Sam has ALWAYS gone back in time and spoken to Colt, and Colt has written in the diary so that Sam will know to come back in time and speak to Colt....ah paradoxes, how clever you are.
