My S2 Companion book arrived in the mail today, so I blew off work for the afternoon and read it - probably not a wise move job-wise, but I have little to no will power and I hate my job, so yeah, it wasn't all that surprising a thing for me to do.

So, as most of you know, I'm quite proud of my TIMELINE - (which is suffering greatly in S5, damn you Kripke) - I base all my timeline info on the episodes themselves whenever possible (sometimes I use DVD extras too), but if something in the episode isn't logical when taken in sequence with information from rest of the season then I disregard it. I always invite people to disagree with me though, as long as they can cite a source for the information.

So, someone told me that in the Supernatural Season 2 Official Companion, Kripke said that Sam was resurrected on his birthday...this was basically the driving force in making me buy the books, because the person who told me this could not give me an exact quote. And that's because...

It's not Kripke that says it! It's in one of those little "Did You Know?" boxes at the side of the page that usually contain information on past projects that the guest-star of the episode worked on. Now, since it is in the "Official" companion book, I guess I still have to use it for the timeline, so fair enough.

I've read some stories that have Sam's dates as May 2, 1983 - May 2, 2007...but technically that's wrong, because Dean let him lie there for two days. So, if Sam ever had a gravestone, it would actually read:

Samuel Winchester
"He's really sorry"
May 2, 1983 - April 30, 2007
May 2, 2007 - (unknown)

Other S2 Companion Tidbits
The S2 companion was nice..there wasn't too much in there that I didn't already know. It was funny to read Kripke's take on how he doesn't think there are angels in the Supernatural universe, though he won't discount them. Unlike the S3 Companion, there was barely anything from Jared or Jensen in there - in the S3 Companion, the author actually successfully records about three pages of Jared rambling. This one, Jared speaks even less than Jensen.

There's a funny quote from JDM though, where he says that he thinks Dean was more messed up about John's death because "Jensen loves me more than Jared does" Hahaha....I know there's a video out there of Jared glomping JDM in an interview line and telling the reporters that he's his boyfriend, so I really don't think that's true. About a paragraph after that JDM also says that he's gone online and argued with fans who think John was a horrible father.  God, you just have to love that man.

THIS. is cool. Not many actors would really go online and defend their characters against the fans directly. Way to go, JDM.

LOL on the "He's really sorry". I thought it would say "Sam, not Sammy". :)

Haha, another good epitaph ;-) "He's really sorry" was just the first thing that sprang to mind, really.

Yeah, I've got a quite the crush on JDM. He brought so much to John Winchester, and obviously, it's because he actually cares about the character.

rofl, oh JDM how I miss your lulzy antics. seriously, and don't worry about using Supernatural to not work, I frequently use Supernatural to not do school work. Yay University.

You can get away with way ditching-of-work much easier in University than you can when you actually have a job - but hey, there's always hope that no one noticed!

I miss JDM too!

The arguing online thing cracks me up. One, this fandom....*shakes head*. And two- rhanks to the meta-tastic crackiness of recent seasons, my brain produces images of him getting really into it, and typing furiously on the keyboard.

I'm in a silly mood tonight.

Haha, me too!!

It's just silly images in my head of JDM typing furiously on the keyboard muttering things like "oh that's it, deangirl_79! You are going down!"

This fandom indeed...I carefully avoid all places where the crazies hang-out, but I always end up hearing about the ridiculousness somehow.

Slightly related: Often I wonder how weird it must be for the actors - they basically can't look up anything about their own show without stumbling across manips of them making-out with their best friend :-P It must be truly bizarre for them.

That's probably the best reason for them to never, ever go online. I find it disturbing as a random person. (Disturbing, not necessarily in a "how dare they" way, but disturbing in the sense that option a) involves incest, which just, ew. and option b) involves well, writing porn about real people- which is just.... well, it makes me uncomfortable. I don't even like celebrity news (I really don't care about so and so's struggle with DRUGS!, but then there's also this sense of ownership/entitlement that creeps me out), so it just bothers me. And option C involves completely original fiction that borrows names and physical appearances, which is just something I never really understood.

Yeah, I'm with you there. (Mind you, I do like some of the completely original fiction, I just wish they were accessible in a medium that didn't borrow names and appearances from real people).

What I find most disturbing is the manips though...you know, the ones where it's basically their heads stuck on porn-stars' bodies. I mean...I guess it's just putting a visual on those stories people write, so maybe it's the same thing really, but I find it notches up the disturbing-factor tenfold.

I don't read celebrity gossip either. I'm of the opinion that people should be allowed to keep their personal lives private - I mean, I know *I* like to be able to do so, and "do unto others..." and all that jazz, so yeah, no celebrity gossip for me. Plus, as you say, I really don't care that much - I've got my own problems to obsess about, thanks.

It's just as weird in its own way as the usual celebrity culture, but I've realized that I keep sort of a mental divider in my head between actors and the characters they play. That sounds pretty normal, I guess, but the way it usually works out is that.... I don't think of the people on tv as "real". It's like I compartmentalize the knowledge that there are actors who filmed that scene and then had some lunch. I don't want to know about them as people- partially because, why should I care what some random high school drop out thinks about a proposed law (for example)- but also because if I know anything about them as people, I then have to, oh, feel guilt for seeing them as objects to ogle. Or they say something totally stupid and now I can only ever think of that when I see them.

So that's the weird side. On the otherside of the equation, though, it means when I think about the actual actors, I've managed to avoid feeling like there's a faux-relationship there, or that they are godlike human beings, or like I want to know the details of their personal lives. It keeps them strangers, and me from being a fan.

The one, one, one exception to this (sort of) is Misha Collins. I resisted as long as possible, but the more I heard, the more I found myself thinking, "goddamn it, stop being cool/funny/interesting." It was the twitter, I swear. But I console myself with the thought that I'm not thinking he's cool because he's an actor on a TV show I watch, I'm thinking he's cool because of the stuff he's done and who he is.. So really, it's just like admiring a blogger! Or the town character. Or that professor everyone talks about. Right? Right?

Yeah, I'm the same way - I think of actors and their characters as completely separate people, which is, I think, what you should do. I find that actors that I CAN'T do that with, are usually bad actors...so they don't count :-P

That being said, I can still read up on actors - know WHEN they dropped out of high school etc... without making them into godlike people whose opinions matter more than other people's. I'm able to keep up the whole "they are just dudes" thing. And I don't feel bad about oogling them either, because I woogle people who aren't actors too when they are that goodlooking :-P But I don't read up about everything, and I don't really care what their favorite breakfast cereal is...of course, I have a mind like a steel-trap when it comes to useless trivia, so just by reading interviews where people do ask silly questions, I tend to remember these things against my will.

With Misha Collins though, I sort of see him as three people, there's Misha Collins the actor, Castiel - a character he plays, and Misha Collins the comedian. It's sort of like watching Chris Rock do stand-up and watching Chris Rock act in a movie - both are entertaining, both have very little to do with who Chris Rock is as a person. Misha Collins' twitter account is sort of like his stand-up comedy forum...it's a character he puts on to entertain us.

But yeah, unlike most of the fandom out there, I don't really have any desire to go to conventions or anything...I watch the videos people take of them and read the reports, because I like information about the show, but I don't really care if I ever meet Jensen and Jared in person. Even the times I've tried to find the Supernatural filming crew in town here, it's not so that I can meet any of the actors, it's just so that I can get a little behind-the-scene glimpse of my favorite show...see how it all comes together.

oh yes, of course on the twitter account (and also the interviews he gives, although I've only looked at a few people have mentioned as noteworthy). I guess what i mean to say is that....to me it comes across as he's someone who is deeply ambivalent about the whole actor/fan/celebrity dynamic, who by necessity must play the game but makes a performance of reacting to it, playing around with it, and on occasion, deconstructing it. And that impresses me, even as it makes me laugh,

I would! But I'm a stickler for accuracy.

It's true though, that May 2 to May 2 looks a hell of a lot nicer than May 2 to April 30...so, if you were going with whatever was aesthetically pleasing, then don't change it.
