Click the fake cut to see a name-redacted version of my sister's facebook status and the resulting frenzied conversation...you never know what's going to spark a hot debate on Facebook.

I especially like the way my sister chose to bring the debate to a close.

I was amused, anyway.

I completely understand the seriousness of this debate. Last night I ate week old house lomein, but I did feed my toddler ravioli instead.

I approve of your parental instincts.

I usually cut all prepared food off at 3 days, but I admit there have been times when I've stretched the rules probably more than I should :P

My rule of thumb is, "Does it smell OK?" and "Does it still look right?"

Can't go wrong with those two things.

If only all conversations on facebook could be this civil XD I have had similar things happen on facebook, except it turned into an all-out war.

Who knew food-spoilage was so controversial!

We're abnormally civil really. ;)

Aw, that's funny! I don't know, I'm one of those people that would have warned her away. XD

(Just so you know, the last name in one of the posts isn't blacked out - I wouldn't have mentioned it, but you were so meticulous with the rest I thought it might be important)

Thanks for the heads-up about the name. It should be fixed now. It's not showing up on my browser, but that's probably just because the picture is loading from cache instead of fresh.

I would have warned her away too :P

You're right: that last comment was hilarious.
For the record, my cut off date for prepared foods has always been 1 week as long as it was put directly in the fridge instead of sitting on the counter for hours on end. I've never ever gotten sick from eating it, though I probably wouldn't feed week-old food to children.

That's a good rule. A friend of ours also pointed out that if you heat anything over a high heat for 30 minutes you can kill all bacteria in it (as well as remove all nutrition) so you know...if you are starving to death and don't mind eating charcoal... :P

I stick to the 3 day rule, but stretch it on occasion, and much like you, it depends on how quickly it went into the fridge too.
