I'm going to VanCon!

Thanks to the extreme kindness and generosity of this fandom, I get to go to VanCon!

Yesterday I woke up and did my finances and discovered that not only could I NOT afford to even a second hand ticket this year (and I was seriously only going to spend $100 on it), but I also am probably not going to be able to afford my rent on the 1st. So, yeah, no VanCon for me. I can borrow money for the rent, but I can hardly borrow money to goof off with my friends for a weekend. I spent the whole day trying to think of ways I could get the money, failing, and then being sad that I really just couldn't go.

And then at the end of the day I sat down at my computer in order to compose a "I can't go to VanCon :( " LJ post, and before I could even type it, I got a message about this lovely donated ticket that was available for someone in my situation.

Hopefully this is busy in a good way. :) Sorry to hear about the finances though. Any luck on the job front?

I'm good thanks! I've got a job at the National Maritime Museum. Admissions, which isn't super interesting and the pay isn't great, but they've given me a permanent contract so I'll stick it out for at least a year unless something amazing pops up (I'm looking at you, British Library). Other than that, I'm just here writing and planning cosplays. :)

Cool. It's nice to have something you can depend on for a bit - even if it's boring and the pay isn't the best. That's what one of my jobs is like now - wouldn't be my first choice, but it's better than nothing!

I hope you hear from the British Library. I'm waiting to hear back about a federal contract - if I get it, then I'll be able to make the big-bucks again and (most of) my problems will be solved. But gov't takes forever to approve or disapprove contracts, and on top of that they just called an election for this fall. So, it could be that no one will make a decision until they know who the new boss is going to be.

I have SO MUCH writing to do. I told everyone that PPP would continue in September, thinking that I'd have a bunch of time this summer to work on it, but instead I was pretty much run off my feet and barely got any time to do any personal projects at all (I didn't even get to use the archery range that I built in my mum's garage last year.)

(Sidenote: I need to find a hawkeye icon from that shot in the last issue of him at full draw from behind.)

Better than nothing indeed. Though to be fair, the people I work with are nice, so that makes it more fun.

Oh the British Library haven't listed the job I'm planning to go for yet, I just know that it should be in the works. But that would be so useful for me if I got that, cos I can walk to the BL and that would save me SO MUCH MONEY.

Ooh! Good luck for your gov't contract! (And your election - Does this mean Stephen Harper is leaving?) I hope you get it! :D

You built an archery range in your mum's garage?! That's so cool. And oh yeah! PPP! I'm waiting for it to be complete so I can read it in one fell swoop. and then I'll message you going YAY but also HUH? And you'll have to fill me in on SPN goings on. :P

HOPEFULLY the election means that Harper is leaving, but we don't have term limits in Canada, so if his party gets enough seats, then he'll still be there, ruining everything forever (or another 4-5 years). So, it's up to the country to vote him out, but we have a couple of things going against us 1)uneducated/confused people who vote against their best interests, 2)a broken electoral system wherein however Ontario (and to a lesser extent Quebec) votes is who has power, and 2b)the left vote is split between the liberals and the new democrats (and to a lesser extent Green), which means that due to the broken electoral system the country can effectively say "NOT HARPER" and by default Harper will get in because we all said "NOT HARPER" a little differently than each other.

Yes! I built an archery range last summer when I lost my job and had time to kill in August while I was there. It's pretty sweet, and a nice length for a range (unlike the range that I built in my apartment which is a little short).

And yes, I'll fill you in on SPN stuff if you are confused with PPP, but HOPEFULLY you can sort of get the jist of what's going on. I have to explain things to the HP characters anyway.

(And thanks! You'll probably be faster at pestering people on my behalf than I will be in tracking down the icon. I tried to make one myself, but I have absolutely no graphics skills, apparently.)

You don't have term limits? That seems like a gross oversight. :/ New Democrats are the ones in Alberta right? The ones who had the surprise landslide victory? Still impressed with that. It was my one nice political thing to happen that week, seeing as we got stuck with Cameron fucking us over for four more years because people are morons. :/ Which way is Ontario likely to vote do you think?

We have a rule that there has to be an election every 4 years, but we don't have a rule about how long someone can be Prime Minister for. Pierre Trudeau had three, non-consecutive, I think so did Chretien (he was PM for pretty much all of the 90s).

And yes, NDP (as they're known) were the ones who got in in Alberta provincially. They also had a sweeping victory in Quebec last election federally, but it wasn't enough to usurp the Conservative majority in the house, because in Quebec the vote is also split with the Bloq, which is the Quebec Independence party. The NDP outperformed the Bloq, but not the Cons.

I don't know how things will shake out this election in Ontario. I'm fearing the worst though, because last election I really had my hopes up and then they were brutally crushed.
