I was originally going to go with Merlin, but then an angsty Supernatural idea took over. For those who are disappointed, I'm sure I'll write Merlin again soon... but I'm guessing that the majority of you will be happier with this, seeing as how the majority of you are Supernatural fans. :P

Today's prompt: Quit

(I went with a super imaginative title again...)

Quit
(Supernatural, 7x23 coda, 378 words)

Sam went to the cabin. He prayed for Cas - more than once, because he knew Cas didn’t always answer him. He thought this time though, this time for sure...

But there was nothing.

Sam stared at his brother’s duffle bag and tried to think. He thought of Dean being dragged to hell and Sam knowing exactly where he was and not being able to get to him, not being able to save him. He remembered the frustration. The feeling that Dean had been taken just out of Sam’s reach, as though he could nearly brush him with his finger tips but get no closer.

He never thought he would long for those days again.

He read over Kevin’s notes on the Leviathan. To see if there was any warning about the weapon, perhaps a hidden note that would say “If you stand too close, you’ll disappear for a week, and then come back completely fine. Don’t worry, Sam.” But of course there was nothing. Nothing about what that weapon actually did to Dick Roman, what it did to Dean, to Cas.

If it could take out an angel... what hope did Dean have?

Sam thought of the other weapons they had used in the past to end their enemies forever. The colt now lost somewhere in Carthage... it had just killed dead, gone, no more. Neither heaven nor hell, nor anywhere in between... just gone. Like the demon blade Dean had shoved into Ruby’s stomach... like the angel sword that had taken out Zachariah.

“What do I do?” Sam whispered to no one.

And he thought of making Dean promise... promise him, that he wouldn’t try to get Sam out of the Cage... promise that he’d go to Lisa’s.... promise that he’d quit the life.

Quit.

Where would Sam go? Sam had no one.

Dean was dead. Dad was dead. Jess was dead. Mom was dead. Bobby was dead. Adam, who Sam didn’t even know, would be beyond saving by now.

All that was left of Sam’s family was a car.

And maybe, later, he would realize that he should have given a thought for Kevin; but at the time, Sam only saw the car, the road, and no one else left to live for.

Sam drove.

If only we would have seen something like this at the beginning of the season. Nice writing.

If this had been shown this season I would be much happier. It makes so much sense. It shouldn't be fanfiction, it should have been canon. Thanks for doing a better job than the writers.

Thank you! :)

In my opinion it IS canon, it's just canon that was implied rather than shown... like the extent of John's drinking.

Sam never really explained his reasoning for quitting, beyond "you were gone" - but who would want to explain bone-crushing grief and being completely lost and alone?

But, I know what you mean, and I too wish we had seen it, so that we could more easily understand Sam, and more easily connect to his story in the first half of the season.

this is it exactly. I feel a lot of sympathy for Sam. His whole life was emptied out..... thanks for writing!

Oh, I hate you. (In a nice way :P)

(Having not seen 7x23, or any of S8, I only have a vague idea of how this actually fits in but it sounds very very Sam and oh my heart. :( )

I'm glad it's in a nice way. ;)

And yay for it sounding very Sam to you! A lot of people are a bit cheesed off this season because in their opinion, Sam did some un-Sam-like things... but I think they were Sam things, but they just never actually let Sam explain/show to us WHY they were Sam things. So, yeah, this is me doing that for them. :P

Yeah I heard that about S8. But to be honest, I'd had enough of that OCCness from about half-way through S7 and only watched the rest through force of will. *shrugs*

Oh, Sam. This is exactly what fanfiction is for: to fill in the gaps where the show's writers fail.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I think I'm taking the day off from ficlets today, because I can't think of anything for today's prompt. :P But um, that's off topic, sorry.

This is the closest to maybe sorta almost explaining away Sam's OOC not looking for Dean that I've seen. But ... they should have freakin' shown us this! Or something like it. Or something other than a weird telenovela relationship.

Ooops ... I'm ranting instead of praising. Bad, Sandy.

This was a lovely coda -- beautifully written and very touching. I adore when fandom gets it *right* (even if the show hasn't).

Thank you very much!

And yes, I completely agree with you. It's as though we were introduced to a character that was fleeing, but we were never shown/told why he was fleeing, and so his actions seem baseless.

that was nice, I like the idea of what happened in Sam's thinking process.

Kind of missed this part in the show but I don't think they are going to deal with any of the year that Sam was gone except for what we saw so far.

Thank you for sharing.

No, I highly doubt it. I kept hoping, but they've moved on from that storyline now and it seems like they're not going to revisit it. Which is both good and bad. Good, because in my opinion they weren't doing a good job of it. Bad, because now they've missed their chance to do a good job of it. :P

Thanks for reading! Glad you liked it. :)
