Ok! Back from the halloween party, let's see how much of the episode I remember...

In all honesty, I was really worried that I wouldn't like this episode when I saw the promo. I thought that the episode would have them realizing that they had dopplegangers, and then having to watch as the dopplegangers slowly decimated their lives...and for some reason, although that premise is nearly the same, I can't stand when I KNOW that everything is about to fall apart, It's like those movies where they set up just everything that is going to go wrong - then I can't stand to actually watch it go wrong.

I was therefore pretty goddamn happy that the episode STARTED with things going wrong, because then I didn't have to cringe and wait for it.

That opening scene was pretty goddamn brutal though.

Ok, anyway, before I get too far into it: How awesome were Jared and Jensen!?!? SUPER AWESOME is the correct answer. I love how they can play different people pretending to be Sam and Dean and you KNOW they're different people pretending to be Sam and Dean. Or, just different people all together, not even bothering to pretend.

So, Bobby has the Leviathan tied up in the basement of the cottage in Montana, which he seems to have made his temporary headquarters. And so far nothing has hurt the dude. And I was pretty goddamn concerned that it was only a matter of time before the spell wore off and the Leviathan got his super strength back and killed Bobby...thankfully, that didn't happen.

Instead Sam and Dean realize they are being framed, and they take off to go hunt down the things doing it. Apparently Leviathans need only touch you to become you - or, touch something that has your DNA, and once they do, they also get YOUR BRAIN. So, uh, suspending disbelief there - or, accepting that the Supernatural universe has different science - because that should be impossible...but, I suppose Shifters could "download" Dean's thoughts way back in Skin, so it's not THAT strange. I was just surprised they could do it without actually touching the bit of Sam and Dean that was connected to their brains.

ETA: I forgot to talk about Cas...so, I thought that maybe the boss of the Leviathans was still inside Cas somewhere, this Leviathan dude seemed to have his knowledge from when HE was inside Cas....but, that still doesn't negate my theory. We'll see though....we'll see...

The friend of Bobby's who was a crazy person was hilarious. I'm sad to see the rock aliases go. I wonder if the dude also gave them new FBI badges.

And...did they really leave the Impala behind at that guy's house? I would NOT trust him with it.

I don't even like Dirty Dancing, but I loved Dean giving Swayze a pass and using the line...and then singing along with the Air Supply song... oh man. We were laughing so hard at that - especially how absolutely weirded out Sam was.

When Sheriff Mills showed up at Bobby's place, I was SUSPICIOUS. I kept thinking "Oh man, did the Leviathans get her? Is she not really the Sheriff?!!?" But...but....she was actually there! And nice! And not an evil monster! YAY! Also, she had a very nice shirt on. She's pretty. I really hope she doesn't die a gruesome death any time soon.

I also liked that she was concerned about Bobby - as much as Bobby gives Dean a hard time for worrying about everyone except himself, I think Bobby is also guilty of that.

And BORAX! There IS something that hurts them!!

I'm jumping around here, I know, but it's hard to remember the order things went in.

When the FBI agents were at the bank scene, and I saw "Manitoc" on a sign behind them, I kept thinking "Are they just reusing old names, or is that on purpose?" Apparently, it was ON PURPOSE! The Leviathan were following their old hunts in order! Wow....

And they shot up Dean's favourite burger place! NOooooooooooo.......

ETA: Also loved the tribute to Pulp Fiction here - my friend had to point it out to me, because it's been years since I've seen that movie (but I WAS wondering why the scene seemed so familiar.)

I did like the conversation they had about how much they hate their "hosts" - how Dean thinks burgers are almost as good as sex, and Sam's salads are "like eating self-righteousness" and the Leviathan knows about the hell visions...and Dean has a "hero-complex" and...yeah...that was the great thing about Skin, (which, incidentally, was the 6th episode of S1), when the Shifter just laid Dean's problems out.

Anyway, they head off to Iowa (hookman), and get arrested. And then the dopplegangers kill the cops...and yeah, as soon as Leviathan!Dean walked into the interview room to talk to Sam, I realized that the Amy secret was going to come out whether Dean broke or not....and it did. And Sam was appropriately heartbroken and angry....and yeah....

Dean, of course, does the borax/decapitation combo. And, um, it's not usually a good sign when you find chopping off your own head "good."

So, the plan is to borax them, then decapitate them, and keep the heads separated from the bodies....interesting.

I know I missed a TON of stuff in there...like Bobby kissing the Sheriff for spilling the soap through the floor....and then being all shy and not kissing her (on the lips) when she leaves - and instead giving her a head-in-a-box. It's a different kind of romance with Hunters, isn't it? Haha.

But, yeah, let's talk about the end. I think this was the scene that Jensen talked about in his Q&A in Chicago, where he and Jared basically rewrote it to make it more believable dialog between men. And Sam once again storms away in angry....this time, I think, for good reason...

I'm not sure how Dean is going to react to this...if it'll mean more drinking. I kind of wish I hadn't seen the next-time promo, because it kind of undercuts the tension of "oh no, what's going to happen!"

I'm also, of course, worried about Sam. It's true we haven't SEEN a petite-mal seizure or a hallucination in the past two episodes, but that hardly means that he's 100%...and the last time he flipped out he REALLY needed Dean to help him find reality again. But, yeah, next time promo sort of undercut all that tension...bah!

ETA: CROWLEY! I forgot to talk about CROWLEY! VERY interesting scene with him at the end, trying to get a deal with the Leviathans. How many ARE THERE? GEEZUS, that's another issue. Anyway - I thought it was interesting that the Leviathans said that they'd prefer to wipe out the demons than deal with them...and that led me to think about how Crowley helped the Winchesters in S5 because Lucifer hated demons. Do you think Crowley might want to team up again against the Leviathans?

Our Leviathan count is 9 so far, I think...with 3 currently decapitated, leaving us at 6.

Ok...uh, that's much shorter than usual, so, yeah, I definitely missed a lot of stuff in there...so, let me know in comments if there's anything in particular you wanted my reaction on!

In other Supernatural news, I met a dude who worked for the show in S4 tonight at the halloween party. It's your same old "good times, great people! Jared and Jensen are awesome!" work experience. :)

This IS short. *hands you another drink* :P

I loved the eppy as well. Wasn't expecting so many humorous scenes (OMG Dean "singing" totally had me rolling), but it was everything I wanted based on the promo.

They must have left the Impala at crazy dude's place. Here's hoping it's locked up somewhere and Dean's got the only key.

I can kinda understand Sam walking away again, but geez....since when does that ever work out for him or Dean? Now the question is - What brings them back together? Doesn't seem to take long based on the promo.

Haha, I think it's shorter because usually I have a 30 minute walk home to think of everything I want to say, and this time I didn't. :P

Yes - the Impala has to be locked up SOMEWHERE! She needs to be safe!

I'm very interested to see what brings them back together...what really sucks is that I think next week, I'm busy on Friday and I'll have to download and watch later. Arg! Especially since next week was the week I saw being filmed...

I loved this ep. Your reactions were, as usual, pretty spot on with mine. :)

The old crazy fanatic was awesome. I loved how serious and straightforward he was, and I think that's what made him so amusing. I LOLed when he smashed Sam's laptop, handed him a new one, and demanded $5000 in cash immediately after! Man, idk what laptop he gave Sam but mine was no more than $1500, if that. :-/ Ripoff, lol. I also loved Dean's reaction when they told him that Bobby Singer sent them and the guy cocks the gun? "Or not! Hey, what, who?" Haha. Poor Bobby. He seems to piss a lot of people off.

As far as the doppelgangers went, it was truly a tribute to J2s acting. I think Jensen is better than Jared (personal opinion) because while Jared did great this time, Jensen was able to play an entirely new character, "Dean-adjacent." Jared's evil!Sam this time seemed like a much more relaxed, casual, and modern version of Lucifer. Like at the diner when he looked into the camera with Dean, all I could see was Lucifer. Is this supposed to be foreshadowing with Sam's problems later on? Possibly. I just preferred Jensen's performance in this ep, esp when evil!Dean told Sam about Amy and the reaction evil!Dean had to Sam's heartbreak and disappointment. The whole, "ah! That right there! That's what I've been waiting for!... I like my food bitter..." I did like the exchange at the diner about the Leviathans hating their vessels, about their problems and what not. I loved it when evil!Sam offered to switch with evil!Dean and evil!Dean was like, "meh, no thanks. I like this one's hair better." Bahahaha. Perfect! Love love loved it. :D And it's ok. I like Jensen's hair better too. Aside from personal favorites, I wasn't too worried since the guys dealt with the whole FBI mess before in S1-3. But I did kinda expect the Leviathans at the end posing as FBI. Idk, there was something off about them the whole time. I was kinda bummed that the really nice sheriff and his daughter were killed after helping the boys escape.

I've been saving my favorite parts for last and they all center around Bobby oddly enough. Ah, gotta love him. First off, I too was worried that the spell would wear off and Bobby would be hurt/killed. If I were Bobby and kept failing in trying to figure out how to kill those things all while it kept running its mouth? Omg. I would have lost it. I'd prob just start throwing everything at it I had in a fit of rage. It was funny when the Leviathan reacted to Bobby's little posion cocktail. "Hmm...kinda oaky... Not quite the finish as holy water, but not as bitter as rock salt." I do appreciate their sense of humor as monsters. It's kinda nice to have a smart monster for once. I like how Bobby quoted Browning and it was all, "wow. That's nice. I like that. It's really lovely." Hehe.

Bobby and Jodi? Yay! I knew she had a thing for him. I hope it works out. I think Bobby may have reserves because of what happened with Karen, but I'll keep my hopes up. It will be interesting if there's anything else said about Bobby's issues with his dad. I doubt it, but I know some fanfic will happen, lol. And BORAX? Of all things? I wonder if they chose Borax as something that would kill a seemingly invincible monster since Borax is about the only thing that will kill cockroaches, who are also similarly invincible?

As for the boys, I am glad that the secret is out about Amy and I'm glad Sam didn't just ignore it and say that nothing was wrong. However. Sam walked away again! Ugh. Boys, I swear. I'll admit, he does have a good reason for once. That was a pretty big betrayal on Dean's part, but like you said, when has walking away and seperating ever worked for them? I'm not too worried since like you the promo kinda takes a lot of anxiety away. I still don't like Dean's attitude though. When Sam walks away and he's all, "sorry Sam." like he was sorry for spilling the cheerios or using all the hot water. I didn't sense much remorse in it. *sigh* I just don't know what to do with these guys...

In fairness to Jared, it's kind of hard when they are getting you to play you 4th evil character to give it a new spin :P That being said, I do agree that Jensen shone in this episode. Jared has, what I call, a "comedy voice" that he sometimes slips into when he knows that the scene is being played for laughs...and that accidentally gives a lot of his characters the same voice/feel. I actually found this episode similar to his acting as Soulless!Sam in Clap Hands - at least the diner scene you mentioned. Not to pick on him more of course, because really, this is the first time in 6 years that they've let Jensen play a different part, so I'm not surprised that he shone to brightly.

But I did kinda expect the Leviathans at the end posing as FBI. Idk, there was something off about them the whole time. I was kinda bummed that the really nice sheriff and his daughter were killed after helping the boys escape.

I also suspected something with those FBI agents. And I too was bummed that the sheriff and his daughter were killed. :(

I didn't know that about cockroaches and borax!! That's neat! I'll keep that in mind in case I ever live in a country with more cockroaches.

As someone pointed out below in comments, Dean may have acted that way because he EXPECTED Sam to leave him - ye old abandonment issues - so he was just sort of defeated about the whole thing. But still...I don't know what to do with these guys either. :P

Ohh, I liked this very much!
The fun moments were fun, the acting was amazing (I loved how evilDean was nearly glowing with the fun he was having) and now the bad secret is out.
I didn't watch the promo, so please don't enlighten me too much ;-) but I still kinda liked the ending.

It couldn't have ended differently, not really. Sam would never just punch Dean, like it would happen vice-verse, and he is the type of guy who would walk away in an emotional turmoil. It's just how he works.
And though Dean didn't really act like it was a big deal, I'm sure it was. But: it was expected. He kinda knew this would happen, and not telling about it was his way of trying to keep Sam with him a little longer.
But it was inevitable, so why fight it? It was, though, a very bad moment for this to happen, because up to then, things were good between them. And I guess, if you were so inclined to believe in "Winchester-luck", it's natural that shit would hit the fan when things are going good.
Still... man.

Let's see how it goes further and how they resolve it - I'd rather NOT have another "Terrible Life"-episode where they just pretend all is dandy and ignore the fact that everything is messed up. I really hated how they never went in between the episodes.

Oh. Bobby.

Poor Bobby. I so hope he will have a nice fling with Jodi Mills, one day. He so deserves it, after all he's been through. I like Sheriff Mills, and when she appeared, I was swinging between "Oh noes, she is a Levi" and "oh noes, Bobby is now the Levi".
So glad I was wrong in both accounts :-D

So, anyway. Lovely ep, and yay for Honeybunny! one of my favorite movies, and that ... well, not really dialog in the diner is sticking in my head like glue. It's on the soundtrack, so yeah, can't escape it when I've listened to it so often.

Adding this:

About Dean not sounding sorry when Sam left:

I agree, it was not actually a "I'm so damn sorry, can you forgive me"-sorry. It was a bit cold.
I explain it to myself this way:

Dean was already certain that the moment Sam knew about Amy, he'd walk away. It's kinda Sam's way of dealing with stuff, and he would do it. So in a way, it had been hanging over Dean's head for so long, with a very probable, if not certain, outcome, that he was just resigned to it.

Why bother trying to beg or plead if it is inevitable that Sam will leave?
Please don't misunderstand me, I know why Sam left, and I'm not mad about that. I would leave too, because I'd need to know what I feel about it and how to deal with it without having Dean around all the time. So it's the far more healthy action to take when you can't just punch Dean and let it be gone.

And in a way, I guess, Dean would know Sam would walk and leave, and he has the right to walk and leave because Dean is a killer and a monster in human skin and so why would, why should Sam stay? There is no reason for him to do so: Sam's smart, strong, capable, apparently (though not really) able to deal with The Cage... why stick with Dean?

So why make an effort to hold Sam, when it's actually better for Sam to leave that bag of issues and try for his own life?

So, I think it's fitting that he didn't even try to sound sorry. Why bother?

I agree, the ending was very in character.

Yes! I agree completely. It's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy - but I also see this as the reason that Dean just let Sam go without any/much argument.

I'd rather NOT have another "Terrible Life"-episode where they just pretend all is dandy and ignore the fact that everything is messed up. I really hated how they never went in between the episodes.

I AM worried about this happening. So, uh, don't get your hopes up? I don't know...I guess I'll just have to wait until next week and maybe they'll surprise me.

it was a wonderful episode, I think it hit all the highlights that make me love the show.

i do think Crowley will try to team up with them, because Crowley does what benefits Crowley ^^.

I think I will resist the promo lure this week, because I didn't last one and I think I would have felt the beginning more strongly if I didn't know they would be dealing with doppelgangers, and after the emotional pay-out /break-up I kinda want to be surprised how the writers deal with this

I really hope Jody Mills stays as well (she...isn't a love interest for Sam or Dean? Can she stay? please?) I like her a lot and I loved the romantic subplot there <3<3<3

Jared and Jensen are just so wonderful and I think especially Jensen had a lot of fun, because aside from Skin he till now could never actually play a really evil or just basically possessed character, so I think he really relished that (and the winking! all the winking! be still my heart)

For Sam I'm also really worried about Lucifer, because I think his newly found equilibrium helped him a lot in ignoring them (and they are clearly still there leviathan!sam said so) and now with this new emotional upheaval *bites fingernails*

so dirty dancing is where that quote is from! I never actually saw it, do you know in what context that line was said? Sam was super weirded out it was hilarious, but I guess even Dean sings schmaltzy pop songs when it comes to his baby^^

Yeah, don't watch the promo.

It really looks like Jensen had a ton of fun. In any case, he did a fantastic job! And yay to all that winking!

I too, am worried about Sam...we'll see...I'm worried Dean is going to drink so much he passes out, and that Sam is going to start talking to Lucifer because he's got no one else with him.

so dirty dancing is where that quote is from! I never actually saw it, do you know in what context that line was said?

So, the girl's name in dirty dancing is "Baby" for some reason (it's been a while since I saw the movie.) And she's rich, and her parents take her to this summer resort place, and she hooks up with a non-rich dance-instructor dude (Swayze)...and her family disapproves, because she's supposed to be dating some rich dude or just being a good girl or something...anyway, the climax of the movie happens when they rich people are all at this dinner. And they've sat Baby by this wall/post (basically in a corner), and they're making her decisions for her and she's supposed to sit there and be a good girl...and Swayze comes in to make his dramatic declaration of love and dance with Baby to show her family that she's amazing...and when he comes up to the table, he says "nobody puts Baby in a corner" - and then he whisks her away and they dance.

At least, that's how I remember it. Let's see if youtube agrees: http://youtu.be/7GBy7rBzz_I (mostly dancing, but you can see the line at the beginning)

I'm just worried that Jodi is going to wind up dead just because Bobby has feelings for her. I HOPE NOT. I love Jodi Mills. OH AND CROWLEY. For a minute I was worried that Crowley was going to be killed. I really hope that never happens. I love that guy. :D

is a normal thing to say in our fandom. Heh.

Poor Sheriff Jodie. She has at least as horrible an introduction to the supernatural as Bobby...her kid raised from the dead only to be a zombie that eats her husband (who is presumably also his father). I think that's worse than a wife possessed by a demon. She and Bobby are made for each other!

Borax is a scary chemical. Never use it in the wash if you have a t-shirt with an iron-on picture. It will destroy it!

I loved all the faces that Jared and Jensen got to pull in this episode. Just watching them having so much fun was great. Everyone else has mentioned all my favorite parts, so I'll just say that this was a great episode. (Even though I think it has the highest body count in the series.)

I haven't been so wound up watching an episode since 'Nightshifter' and 'Folsum Prison Blues'--all the misdirects that had me worrying that something bad was about to happen, like Sheriff Mills being a Leviathin (which she wasn't) and the Leviathin breaking free and killing--or impersonating--Bobby (he didn't)and the Leviathins cornering Dean in his cell (the cop let him out)--my stomach hurt by the end!

And I agree with marlowe78's read of Dean's "I'm sorry"--he was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and he's not going to try to defend his actions because he is conflicted about what he did and he knew that if Sam found out he would react like that. More evidence of Dean just giving up, he's not even going to fight about it with Sam.

Only thing I'm annoyed and relieved about is the preview seems to whitewash the issue...which, while it makes me uneasy as to how the writers are going to pull that off satisfactorily also means I don't have to agonize all week...

But like you, of course, I LOVED this week...and you are right, all those misdirects had me worrying constantly! Especially anytime they cut to Bobby and the Sheriff in the cabin...and then the boys being locked down when the Leviathans came for them. Man.

I loved this ep, and I'm glad that the show at least didn't pretend this was the first time they were wanted by the FBI.

But honestly, if I were the FBI, and a cop told me the Winchesters were dead, then it wouldn't matter what they said, I'd demand to see the body and have a full autopsy done under my eyes and even then I wouldn't believe it.

(and yeah the fed asking was a Leviathan, but if the Winchesters really were nr two on the most wanted list, then I doubt they were the only ones after them. )

So seriously, they might be more quiet about it, but I really do hope that the feds at least, and hopefully with them the cops, would still be on the look out for them.

I mean, fake your death once, k, that's believable, but coming back after the second time, would mean that anyone with common sense would be waiting for them to try for a hat trick*eg*

pparently Leviathans need only touch you to become you - or, touch something that has your DNA, and once they do, they also get YOUR BRAIN.

I'm finding it interesting how much the Leviathans have in common with some of the purgatory bound monsters. They possess people much like the worms that Eve made (except ewwie black blood type stuff instead of the ewwie black worms), they can shift with access to DNA plus seem to get the full downloads aka Shapeshifters or Ghouls, though Ghouls have to eat the DNA... Big teeth/mouth - the Croccata - Blood/flesh eaters - Vampires and Ghouls and well, numerous other monsters. Eve was from before the Angels, just like the Leviathan, I'm wondering if there's a link....

That's a really interesting observation! I didn't even realize that, but now that you mention it, it's very true.

Hello!

My guess would be maybe the Supernatural books? Castiel WAS a fan of Chuck's work, after all.

Other than that, *Shug*

Well, if they downloaded the guys' memories, then they'd know where to start. But it's true, the books are out there... hm.
