My Fanon: Middle Names

Occasionally things slip into my fanon....either consciously or subconsciously. In my Quick Reaction post to 6x02, I talked about one of the things that had slipped in subconsciously, because so many other people also believed it (in this case: that Dean raised Sam from his babyhood onward pretty much on his own). Once I realized that not only was it not canon, but it was also highly unbelievable and didn't mesh well with how John interacted with his kids in the show - I promptly threw it out of my fanon.

Some things, I'm not so willing to let go of...and some things in my fanon are just bizarre.

For instance, I really like to believe that Dean's middle name is Marion. I think it suits him. Now, there's absolutely no evidence that the boys even HAVE middle names, but in my head Dean's middle name is Marion and Sam's middle name is John.

And there's your useless bit of information for the evening...sometimes even a canon-crazy person such as myself makes up their own fanon and doesn't really want to let go of it.

On a somewhat related topic: Years and years ago, there was an interview done with Jensen, and in it he basically implied that in HIS personal fanon, Dean used to...well, be a prostitute from time to time when he was younger. Anyway, I have never been able to re-find that article. I remember I found it on a webpage with a pinkish background and that it may have been for some Australian TV guide type magazine, but then again, maybe it wasn't. Anyway, if anyone remembers this article better than me and can maybe find it, please let me know!

Nah, I cheated, I crowdsourced finding it to spnstoryfinders a while back, and then when you asked I went through the spnstoryfinders tag till I found the post.

:P Typical. (Though, I'd want to point out to her that: If Jensen believes it that's going to influence how he plays Dean...so...yeah, things that are Jensen's fanon, are way closer to being canon than anything we come up with.)

Of all the possible middle names Dean could have, why Marion? Somehow, I do think it suits him, but I'd like to know how you came up with it in the first place. :)

Now you made me think about my personal fanon, and the things that I can't let go of, despite lack of evidence, or canon evidence to the contrary. Like, I'll always believe that Dean got a tertiary-level degree from a correspondence course, and that the Winchesters put protective wards on the Impala. :D

Well, my older brother and sister's middle names are my parents' names...so, that's a naming trend I'm familiar with. Also, if Sam and Dean were named after their grandparents, I thought their middle names might be named after their parents...and Marion is the masculine form of Mary.

Also, it was John Wayne's real name.

I always thought Dean's middle name was Michael for the longest time, and I have no idea why I thought that. I can't think of where I saw it because I know I didn't come up with it on my own....And I don't think it actually would be Michael because of the whole vessel thing-they wouldn't give that big of a hint.

I've seen Michael a couple of times in fanfics (pre-S5), so maybe it just filtered into your brain that way.

All evidence seems to point to the idea that the boys don't have middle names at all - but I still don't want to let go of Marion.

Just butting in...

I think it's actually canon that Dean and Sam have no middle name. In "The Benders", K Hudak reads the police-files of Sam and Dean Winchester, and I'd think (though I don't know it) that in THERE, they'd write stuff like that.

So, for me they are middle-name-less (as seems to be John and Mary), which'd make them kinda special, if you believe American movies :-D

fanon is a strange place, and if you'd take Jensen's interview as a base, it isn't really THAT certain that he ever 'did it' with a guy - I'm sure there'd be some woman willing to pay good bucks, right?

But I agree with fanon that little-Dean (or teen-Dean, if he ever looked like JA did) had propositions, and I'm pretty ok with the idea of him using his looks to get some money.
After all, 'prostitution' doesn't have to include him dropping his pants, right?

Btw, "Marion" is a girl's name in Germany.

"Marian" though I've heard of being used for both gender, and "Marius" is definitely a boy's name.

Marion is unisex here, but mostly used for girls. Marian though, I think is only used for girls over here - unless I've gotten my spellings confused.

We don't use Marius at all to my knowledge - unless they are from an ethnic family.

It is. You are correct. It'd be in the police reports if they had them. Still, in my mind, Dean's middle name is totally Marion, and Sam's is John.

Actually, in the Djinn-Wish!verse in What Is And What Should Never Be, John had the middle initial E. When asked about it, Kripke said that the prop department did that, and it probably stood for Eric.

There are some North Americans without middle names, but it's pretty rare, I think...so yeah, the Winchester boys are special.

No, and 'prostitution' doesn't necessarily mean that any of his clients were men either - as you indicate. Personally, I could totally see myself paying to defile a young JA (but not TOO young, because that's bad)...so yeah, there would be women out there who would take advantage of any services offered for sure. That being said, Dean's pretty casually accepting of everyone...I'm sure there would be certain things he'd be willing to do with guys, even given the fact that he was straight. I mean...sometimes guys just want to look at something pretty while they do everything themselves...but yeah, the comment is completely open to interpretation, and it doesn't change the fact that I believe canon Dean is 100% straight.

I just think it's an interesting character point no matter how you interpret it.

That's right. It says a lot about him, and considering what he's already given for his family (canon-based ;-) ) it'd be no real surprise if he gave more.

No, and I think Dean is the type to know that. However, beyond letting a guy blow him, I'm not sure Dean would offer many services to male clients...since you know, I really think getting fucked would freak him out, and being able to fuck someone you aren't attracted to in the slightest brings up performance issues...but you know, that's just my opinion. Uh...sorry for being rather blunt with my language there.

I'm a fairly blunt person, and I have little shame when it comes to sex....very very little shame ;)
