hells_half_acre: (Think Sam Think!)

I realised that if I post something every day for the next five days, I'll have a post for every day in June!  The problem is, thinking of something to say every day, so....

I just finished rewatching S3 for my If Clothes Could Talk project, and I've come to the startling realization that I actually prefer Ruby 2.0 to Ruby 1.0...

This is nothing against the Katie Cassidy, I think she's great and she was obviously given that particular direction when she was playing her Ruby.

I like Ruby 2.0 better because she's better at manipulating. Ruby 1.0 was far too brash, and I really couldn't see that personality being as successful as Ruby 2.0 at leading Sam to the darkside. Ruby 1.0 grated on Sam's nerves - you could see it in every scene they had together.

So, yeah, this supports my theory that when Ruby tried to come back as that secretary or whatever - with the long brown hair and the same attitude as in S3, and Sam kicked her out of the car, she realized that she'd have to completely change her approach - and found, not only an empty vessel to comply with Sam's morals, but also picked a small brown-haired thing and tempered the fiercer (more demonic) aspects of her personality - Ruby 2.0 was much easy to believe when she claimed she wanted to help, that she cared about Sam...that's because Genevieve played her as though she was in love with Sam, whereas Katie played her as though Sam was an annoying child - though, I think the way Ruby 2.0's love came across was like someone who really loves their stupid pet dog, so you didn't really lose the quality of her thinking Sam was an idiot or beneath her.

Anyway, yeah....I'm about to watch S4 now, so maybe I'll change my mind and find Ruby 2.0 just as annoying. I don't know why some fans love the demons so much *cough*Meg*cough* I find them really annoying - I think because I'm supposed to find them annoying, because they are DEMONS.

Yes! And I never understood why kids want to be Darth Vader...

BTW I agree with your Ruby assessment, although I hadn't really thought about it before.

That whole brash, 'you are an idiot' vibe was very annoying from both Ruby 1.0 and from Bela. Bela always acted like Dean was an idiot, but when I rewatched her first appearance, 'Bad Day at Black Rock,' Dean actually got the upper hand on her in that wonderful scene in her apartment, getting the rabbit foot without Bela realizing till he was gone. So it was frustrating that Dean was subsequently always coming across as her inferior. They should have been written more as equals.

The only "evil" characters that I like are the ones that are "evil" because of some tortured backstory and a complex personality - anime is really good at pulling this off. Or, there's Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender (movie comes out July 1st, I'm excited!).

I completely agree with you about Bela - no one likes a condescending asshole.

The only Bela moment I like is when Dean threatens to kill her in Fresh Blood, and she actually looks terrified - because she does know that he's a capable hunter. And then that's completely gone by Dream A Little Dream of Me...again, if they had just had an evolving relationship between the two, I think the character would have performed much better.

I've never really been one to love the villain, especially when they're constantly one-upping the hero(es).

The one exception in Supernatural has been the trickster/gabriel, which partially might be influenced by knowing how it all turned out, but mostly I think comes down to the actor's charisma. I just like seeing him on screen.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. I have no problem with the Gabester either...maybe because although he one-ups the heros, he's not pompously condescending about it...or at least, I don't think he is.

And yeah, the actor's charisma certainly doesn't hurt.

Some people just have this shine to them, some kind of thing that makes watching them feel almost compulsory.
