Tying the Psychic Kids to the Apocalypse
Jan. 18th, 2010 01:51 amI've heard some criticism lately about how the Psychic Kids plotline doesn't tie in with what's currently being said about Sam and Dean. Specifically: If it always had to be Sam and Dean, why did Azazel make multiple "special children" and have them battle to the death?
It's a valid criticism. After reading the Companion books, it's really apparent how much of the story is just sort of made up as we go. The writing team does an awesome job of tying everything together to the main plot, but we know that the angel storyline was an invention of the spring of 2008, and that the Trickster really was just a Trickster in his first appearances.
That being said, I'm going to explain how the Psychic Kids DO make sense....
What it hinges on is how much Lucifer's side KNEW. You have to think of it in terms of prophecy. This is how I picture it:
1. There is a prophecy that there will be two siblings - one of which will have demon-blood. One sibling will be Lucifer's vessel, the other will be Michael's. They'll bring about the apocalypse. This is what I picture Lucifer telling Azazel in the convent in 1972 - "You must find me a child. A very special child..." BUT he can't pinpoint how to find this child.
2. So, the trick is, Azazel didn't know WHICH child. He didn't have a name or gender or place or parentage...so he went about the country (the world? Maybe Luci was able to narrow it down to the continental USA) making deals with potential parents thathe either liked the look of, or who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time had the ability to be angel vessels and would pass it on to their children. (
redrikki pointed this out to me in comments.)
3. Of course, this meant that he ended up with multiple "special children" - how do you tell which one is the right one? Well, if the prophecy is to be fulfilled, and if he lucked out and actually found the correct child, then destiny would favour the survival of that child over the others...so, let's have them battle to the death - whoever is left standing might not be the correct kid, but it'd certainly weed out the kids who DEFINITELY aren't correct.
4. Get that kid to open the gate to Hell so that Lilith can get loose - because eventually she has to be killed.
5. Get that kid to lead a demon army to break the seals, right after you get Alistair to make a righteous man spill blood in hell....John Winchester not working out? No problem, Dean just made a deal, wait a year to get the ball rolling...your victorious special kid refusing to take up the his position as leader of a seal-breaking demon army? Get a demon to infiltrate his personal relationships, gain his trust through false promises, maybe get him hooked on drugs so that his brain gets a bit muddled, convince him that he's helping the world when he's really not and....
6. Bam! Seals are broken, Lucifer rises, and if he were alive Azazel would be kicking back and congratulating himself on a job well done - after all, he did find the right kid after all...he knew there was something off about that Jake guy.
Anyway, that's how I see it all happening. I'm not sure if the writers will ever address the issue, so I just thought I would put my version events out there.

Date: 2013-02-09 06:53 pm (UTC)Question - how does this tie into the fact that so many Demons / creatures were trying to kill Sam? The fact that after the Gate was opened the demons that Sam was supposed to become the leader of were now out to get Sam and try to kill him (and Dean) Malleus Maleficarum?
In Bedtime stories the Crossroad Demon said that there is a new leader rising but she couldn't tell Sam who he was? She didn't say she; she said he... Since Lilthe was still in hell before the gate was opened is it possible that the crossroad's demon that had the deal was Crowley and he was doing Lilthe's bidding while she was "locked up" so to speak?
Then the Demon in Malleus Maleficarum said that the new leader doesn't like you very much sees Sam as a threat.
Jus in Bello ? The Demons there were out to get Sam and Dean - so why?
Then why was it only after the Season 3 finale that we see Sam not being affected by Lilthe's whitelight and again a few times in Season 4 but not all the time; still trying to figure out why some times Sam was not flingable and other times he wasn't. When he encountered Lithe in Season 3 finale he was not yet on the Demon blood so that really couldn't always be the reason - could it be his state of mind too?
Well enough with the questions - just had a few thoughts there especially now thinking of how the MOL tie into the family business.

Date: 2013-02-09 08:53 pm (UTC)Again, it comes down to "how much do the demons know?" In my opinion, all the demons know is that Sam was supposed to lead a demon army in order to start the apocalypse (or fight in it). They DON'T know the part where Sam is supposed to be Lucifer's vessel. (Remember that the demon Casey said that a lot of demons don't even believe in Lucifer.) So, they're trying to kill him because it's a jockeying for power. Why should they be lead by a stupid human? They should be led by a demon - so if they kill the human, they assume they'll be thanked and promoted for their effort within the ranks.
That's a neat idea! I suppose that is indeed possible. I mean, I know from interviews with the writers that it was just a case of them deciding late in the game that the demon would be Lilith (and therefore female), but I like you explanation!
Especially since the crossroads demon would have reported directly to Crowley, rather than Lilith, since Crowley was King of the Crossroads, but lieutenant to Lilith who actually held the contracts.
Then the Demon in Malleus Maleficarum said that the new leader doesn't like you very much sees Sam as a threat...
Jus in Bello ? The Demons there were out to get Sam and Dean - so why?...
Then why was it only after the Season 3 finale that we see Sam not being affected by Lilthe's whitelight...
I think Lilith didn't want to die. She knew that she was the final seal and she knew the signs of what was coming. I think she had demons try to kill Sam, and then she tried to kill him herself, in the hopes that if Sam were dead, that would mean that Lilith would not be killed in order to free Lucifer. She was clinging to life... same deal with why she tried to bargain one final time with Sam in The Monster At The End of This Book.
And I think she was reduced to bargaining because her white-light didn't work. Before the demon-blood addiction, it wasn't so much Sam, as some external force (or possibly a cosmic rule about Sam) that prevented Lilith from killing Sam herself. This is my theory, anyway. Just like there's a rule that angels need permission to possesses their vessels, so too is there some rule that Lilith can't kill Lucifer's vessel, no matter how hard she tries. I just don't think Lilith realized that until 3x16.
But, I'm pretty sure that Sam was only not-flingable while he was on demon blood, and only then, he had to concentrating, though it's been a while since I've watched S4, so I could be wrong.
