Hello,
Hopefully I still have some demented'verse readers on LJ - if you haven't left yet for other fandom spaces (such as tumblr, which I am bad at - but if any of you are on tumblr, let me know.)
So, I listened to a plot synopsis/review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and apparently it is very very bad (except for the acting, which was good, the character of Scorpius, and the chemistry between Scorpius and Albus).
Even without the reviewers opinions, I can tell by the plot synopsis that it is basically tropey badfic. Sigh.
So, needless to say, although I considered filtering in facts from it into the demented'verse, I probably won't be. That being said, I DO want to discuss Hogwarts houses....
In The Cursed Child, both Albus and Scorpius are sorted into Slytherin. Rose is sorted into Gryffindor.
We know that James is in Gryffindor and Teddy is in Hufflepuff (Epilogue, JK Rowling tweet) - so, I was going to be keeping those facts in the Demented'verse.
However, I was really torn on both Scorpius and Albus. I definitely wanted Albus to be in a house other than Gryffindor.... and the epilogue heavily implied that there was a good chance he'd be sorted into Slytherin, just because Harry kept reassuring him that it was fine if he were to be. I didn't want to put him in Gryffindor, because I thought that might be too easy - and putting him in Slytherin WOULD be interesting and would go a long way in subverting the "all Slytherins are evil" myth - but, I also kind of wanted to put him into Hufflepuff or even Ravenclaw, just to throw an even bigger wrench in the works of Potter expectations.
And that brings me to Scorpius... I kind of wanted to put him in Hufflepuff or even Gryffindor to throw a bigger wrench into the Malfoy expectations. If I put them both in Hufflepuff, then they could become little Hufflepuff friends (and spoiler: but there's no way that Albus and Scorpius aren't being friends... and Rose too. I actually absolutely love the AS/S ship, though, thankfully for some, the demented'verse is going to be over before I have to make a decision on whether I want to take the friendship that direction). Now, in the Cursed Child, they were little Slytherin friends, and apparently Scorpius was a sweetheart and it still subverted the Slytherin myth.. but, can you imagine little Hufflepuff Scorpius and confused Ravenclaw Albus? Or timid Slytherin Albus being defended by friendly and loyal Hufflepuff Scorpius?!
Now, it doesn't help that I wrote a LOT about Hufflepuff house (as I see) with Teddy, and I've grown quite fond of that house... so maybe I'm extremely biased.
Rose is going into Gryffindor for sure - I just don't see a possibility for anything else considering the mega Gryffindors that her parents are.
(You could argue that both Draco and Astoria are slytherins - but in the demented'verse, Draco has gone to great lengths to give Scorpius the childhood/raising that Draco never had, in an attempt to nurture differnet qualities in his son then were nurtured in himself.)
Anyway, what do you guys think? If you were sorting the Demented'verse, in which House would you sort Harry's kids? or Scorpius?

Date: 2016-06-28 04:37 pm (UTC)I mean, fundamentally, the moral I like best concerning the houses is that it's all hogwash and actually damaging... so, maybe I'm extremely bias coming into this, but yeah, I fully believe that a Malfoy could raise a Gryffindor and two Gryffindors can raise a Ravenclaw.
But hey, opinions will vary, and I did ask for yours. :P
And hey, even if Albus ends up in Gryff because he HAS to, and Scorpius ends up in Slythering because he HAS to... then they'll still be friends in my book. ;)

Date: 2016-06-29 01:34 am (UTC)This is what you are born with. But it's not just genes that influence what you become. A person who doesn't have the genes in their family might for some reason decide they want to become doctor. Diligence and hard work can give them what they need to be successful and because of the heart that goes into it, probably often turn out to be better doctors than the ones that naturally have the ability.
What was it that they say? 1 percent genes, 99percent hard work? You can become anything if you really put your mind to it.
The sorting hat itself said Harry had the capacity to become slitherine because of the spell by Voldemort but Harry became Griffindor because he chose to be. So, you don't have to become anything. People just have the natural abilities an inclinations of their ancesters to build on through life experience.
I'd think that for a child of a Griff family line to become Ravenclaw, there would need to be some outside influence. Someone he or she looked up to and wanted to be like. And she'd have to work hard to become this type of person.
I also dislike people assuming that all Slytherine are evil. That is not part of the personality traits. A Slytherine who wanted to be Griffindor could be one as well.

Date: 2016-06-29 02:09 am (UTC)So, yeah, I think that if Draco and Astoria raised Scorpius differently than to how they were raised, Scorpius could be in a completely different house, no matter what his genes were. Sam goes for Albus, if he picked up on different qualities when he was a kid - maybe hanging out with his Hufflepuff "step-brother", then he could easily be a Hufflepuff instead of a Gryffindor...or, he could pick up on the Slytherin traits that Harry had/has (even if their due to Voldemort's influence, and be a Slyth) OR...perhaps he could just take all that Gryffindor bravery and apply it to the pursuit of knowledge and end up in Ravenclaw, even though he had no Ravenclaw influences as a kid.
But, it's just a different philosophy of where our personalities come from - the blank slate vs whatever-the-opposite-of-the-blank-slate is. I've always been of the believe that "your children are not your children; they are the son's and daughters of life's longing for itself. They come through you, but not from you... you may give them your love, but not your thoughts; for they have their own thoughts.
So, yeah, we have different opinions, and that's OKAY! Like I said, I'm cool with Gryff-Albus and Slytherin-Scorp, but I don't personally see it happening that way in the Demented'verse...or, better said, I'm not too interested in writing that myself. :)

Date: 2016-09-20 04:08 pm (UTC)BUT... if I were forced to sort them, I'd probably put Dean in Hufflepuff and Sam in Ravenclaw. And it's not because Sam is "the smart one" they're both equally intelligent - it's just because of their separate approaches to knowledge.
