Mmm...the Kinks. I love this song.
Dean lives in Gastown! Or possibly a little to the left of Gastown. In anycase, I'd recognize the harbour outside his window anywhere, and that brick building may or may not be Waterfront station.
The building he works at is most definitely not in Vancouver though. It probably only exists inside a computer or something.
Dean Smith watches Project Runway...haha.
Then he thinks Sam is hitting on him...heehee. "Save it for the health-club, pal"
Dean: "I'm going to do a public service and let you know that you over-share."
-Hahahaha
Sam/Jared looks so good in yellow. My goodness. It brings out the green in his eyes perfectly.
And speaking of pretty - holy crap Jensen! You are a very pretty man.
Time line information! Paul Dunbar was set to retire in 2 weeks on April 14, 2009. Yay! Also, Dean and Sam started work 3 weeks ago. This means that Dean took all of January and February to recover from the beating from Alastair. :(
Dean: "So you're telling me your dreams are special visions and your some kind of psychic?"
Sam: "No, that would be nuts!"
-Hehe, I love how much this show makes fun of itself, and yet still doesn't get cheesy about it.
Dean: "Should we go check this out?
Sam: "Right now?"
Dean: "No, you're right, it's late."
Sam: "I am dying to check this out right now!"
Dean: "Right!?!"
-I love Dean's continually use of "Right!?!" in this episode. It's amazingly adorable and hilarious.
Sam kicks down the door like Rambo or something.
Sam: "How did you know that ghosts are scared of wrenches?"
-HAHAHA, that is such a Ghostfacers line...it's brilliant.
Sam: "I don't like my job. I don't like this town. I don't like my clothes. I don't like my own last name!...it feels like I should be doing someting else...there's just something in my blood."
-What's interesting here is that when I first watched this episode, I took the obvious route of "something in my blood" being about Sam's demon blood. But now I'm thinking that "something in my blood" is about BOTH him and Dean...interesting anyway.
I like how there are things that stay the same about both characters. Sam feels different and doesn't like to be called Sammy, Dean doesn't believe in destiny and only believes in what's right in front of him.
Do you remember Folsom Prison Blues, and how Sam commented that maybe Dean should be concerned that he fit in so well - I think Dean just fits in everywhere. In this episode we see a completely adapted Dean, and a Sam that is struggling to adapt. I think Dean is just a better adapter than Sam.
Dean: "You don't want to be fighting ghosts without any health insurance!"
-Haha
Sam: "You aren't some corporate douchebag. This isn't you! I know you!"
Dean: "Know me? You don't know me, pal."
-Again, we have an awesome mirror to the finally...specially When the Levee Breaks, when Sam tells Dean that Dean doesn't know him. And although this is Dean Smith talking, I think it still holds true for Dean Winchester. The boys *don't* know each other. They both changed while Dean was in a hell and neither one fo them sees it.
The first time I watched this episode, I didn't even realize the colours were brighter until Zachariah greyed everything out again. :P
Zachariah: "..pay a visit. Get my ducks in a row."
Dean: "I am not one of your ducks!"
-I think this is the beginning of Zach's mistakes when it comes to controlling Dean - mainly, not understanding that Dean can't be controlled.
Dean: "...Very creative."
Zachariah: "You should see my decoupage"
Dean: "Gross, no thank you."
-Haha
Zachariah is all about destiny, isn't he? This episode brings up a lot of questions about destiny vs. free will. I think it's a mixture of both, and that that's also what this episode is trying to tell us.
Dean: "Angel or not, I will stab you in your face!"
-best threat ever.
The Monster At The End Of This Book

I love the special intro for this episode. The fact that they didn't do the usual one and instead used the books.
You know what else I love: The look on Sam's face when Dean says "I'm full frontal in this!" HAHAHA, priceless.
Dean: "For fans, they sure do complain a lot."
Then we get the slash conversation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Supernatural is the only show to openly acknowledge the existence of slash. It's hilarious. Personally, I'm more in agreement with Sam and Dean, not so much that it's "sick" but that it doesn't sit right with me. (I feel it diminishes the love between the brothers, rather than adds to it).
I love Dean's mouthed "what the fuck?" when the publisher is going on about how much she likes it when the boys cry.
Publisher: "If only real men were so in touch with their feelings."
Dean: "Real men?"
Publisher: "I mean, no offense, but how often do you cry like that?"
Dean: "Well, right now I'm crying on the inside."
-Haha, oh poor Dean.
I watched this one with Susie and after they did the tattoo reveal and the Publisher showed them hers, Susie said "Wait, does that mean that she accidentally make it so that she can't get possessed?" and I said "yeah, I guess" and Susie broke out in loud laughter for like five minutes! It was hilarious!
I love the narration as they walked up to the house. "Sam and Dean traded soulful looks" - and they just sort of glance at each other, completely devoid of anything that could be called "soulful" - man, it's great.
We learn that the last names were never in the books. That's good to know...it makes me wonder what else was never in the book.
Chuck: "Well, there's only one explanation. Obviously I'm a god.
Sam: "You're not a god."
Chuck: "Yeah, no, I'm definitely a god. A cruel, cruel, capricious god. The things I put you through -The physical beatings alone!"
-I love the way Chuck's mind works.
Chuck: "I am so sorry. I mean, horror is one thing, but to be forced to live bad writing..."
-Hahaha...sometimes I wonder if that was as much an apology to Jared and Jensen as it was to the audience.
Dean reads Vonnegut, and Sam is once again surprised.
Domestic!Winchesters - Laundry! Again, I LOVE how we see the domesticity this season. It's ironic, with all the bad-blood between the brothers and the ever widening gulf between them in their relationship, we actually see more of them being their version of "homey" than we ever have before. But after 3.5 seasons, we finally see them doing their laundry...and I love it.
Dean: " "Sam turned his back on Dean, his face brooding and pensive." I mean, I don't know how he's doing it, but this guy is doing it. I can't see your face, but those are definitely your "brooding and pensive" shoulders."
-Another one of my all time favorite lines. I also love the fact that Dean knows Sam's moods by looking at the back of him.
Chuck: "You especially are not going to like this."
Dean: "I didn't like hell."
-I love that line.
Another thing I absolutely love: Sam's reading voice! Oh man...he puts on this whole other voice when he's reading - it's to make fun of it sure, but it's adorable and hilarious.
I love Sam saying that Dean would use duct-tape and bar rags before he would use bandaids with pink flowers on them. They are such manly men.
Dean: "It says we get into a fight, so no fighting."
-I love how Sam gives him a look like not fighting would actually be easy...oh boys. All you do is fight, even when you get along you fight.
Dean: "It frustrates me when you say such reckless things."
Sam: "Well it frustrates me when you would rather hide than fight."
-I think Sam's projecting. I mean, Dean's right in that he doesn't want to hide, he wants to plan and come in strong...whereas Sam's still in the charge-in-guns-blazing mentality that he's had since S1. But I also think that part of Sam would like to hide Dean, and he sees it as Dean's choice to hide, but I think it's actually Sam's preference for Dean - because Sam thinks that he can take Lilith now that he has all his demon blood mojo, but he knows that Dean doesn't stand a chance.
I like how Chuck says that he didn't write in the demon-blood stuff, because he thought it would make Sam look unsympathetic. Personally, I think the writers had a challenge in S4, because I found that a lot of fans actually DID lose sympathy for Sam...because they focused on WHAT he was doing, not his motivations for doing it.
Sam: "Dean's not...he's not Dean lately."
-Again, the boys have changed, and they can't keep treating each other like they haven't, and even when one of them recognizes it - like Dean in Sex and Violence or Sam right here, they don't know what to make of it. They don't know how to react to it or what it means. Sam mistakes the new Dean for being weaker than the old Dean, but really, he is just different.
Chuck's an awesome psychiatrist. I think he missed his calling. I love the pacifying voice he uses to talk to Sam.
Sam: "He's taken care of me his whole life. I can't return the favour?"
-I love the fact that Sam acknowledges that Dean has taken care of him his whole life...but this also speaks to the role-reversal thing I was talking about. Sam trying to return the favour by taking care of Dean now - but only messing it up, because Sam isn't used to taking care of someone and Dean's really not used to being taken care of.
Chuck: "Maybe the demon-blood makes you feel stronger, more in control..."
-Yes, exactly! I mean, this is brought up again in 5x02 which we just saw, but still...I like the fact that it is all the way back here. The fact that Chuck points out the need that the addiction fulfills. The fact that it's those feelings Sam would crave after Dean's death. He was too weak to prevent Dean from going to hell, it was all beyond his control - everything always has been beyond Sam's control it seems - so of course he'll go for something that makes him feel strong and in control.
Then Castiel gets his moment to fangirl over his favorite author! Haha, I love it.
The Winchester Gospel. Hmmm...future fic anyone? I'd love to see that.
Dean & Chuck: "You gotta be kidding me."
Castiel: "I am not...kidding you"
-Ah, Castiel...you make everything so amusing.
Sam: "You think I'll do it, don't you? You think I'll go darkside!"
Dean: "Yes, alright!..."
-Oh Dean...I know you don't know what's up with Sam right now, and your still all jaded from what your Dad told you to do two years ago...but all the monsters in this season have been trying to tell you that monsters are made when people tell them that they are monsters! If Sam knows you expect him to go darkside, those are the expectations that he's going to fulfill.
Then of course, Dean makes it worse by talking about him and Castiel as a "we" - for all Dean's jealous about Sam replacing him with Ruby, he doesn't really clue into the fact that Sam probably feels like Dean is replacing him with Castiel.
And then YAY helping!Castiel :) I love sneaky Castiel! I love the whole exchange between him and Dean. I think it's ironic that heaven punishes him for trying to keep angels in Dean's good books, when it's clear that being in Dean's badbooks means that Dean doesn't do what they want. But anyway, I love the fact that Castiel helps.
And then we get into another debate over destiny vs. free will, because the ending that we see in the episode...Chuck didn't write that. He says so himself when Dean shows up to get him.
I love the fact that when Dean asks Chuck to help, we get the inspirational swelling music and then Chuck says "no friggin' way" - it's a cheap soundtrack gag, but I love it.
I also love the fact that when Chuck points out that Dean can't shoot him because then an archangel will destroy him, Dean just says "Well, interesting exercise: let's see who the quicker draw is."
Oh yeah, now's the time I get to break into a huge argument about symantics. Language is a great thing, you know? So, what did Chuck write about this scene:
Lilith patted the bed seductively. Unable to deny his desire, Sam succumbed, and they sank into the throes of fiery demonic passion.
Lilith does pat the bed seductively...and Sam is unable to deny his desire (to kill Lilith)...and they sank into the throes of fiery demonic passion (and what's more passionate then trying to kill each other?)
It's all in how you read something, folks.
That being said, I think Lilith telling Sam that she wasn't supposed to live to see the apocalypse should have been a HINT. Mind you, I don't think I really caught the hint either at the time.
I wonder though, if Lilith was serious about that deal...I mean, it doesn't make much sense, because if Lilith doesn't want to die, why is she breaking the seals? Why is she so intent on seeing Sam and Dean dead? I don't get it.
Sam: "She was right about one thing. She's not going to survive the apocalypse. I'll make sure of that."

Extended Scene
Two extended scenes, one at the beginning of the episode and one at the end.
The first is in the comic books store, and the line that is different is that when the guy says "it has an underground cult following" he adds afterwards: "...like way underground...like nobody read them...ever."
-haha
Then at the end of the episode, it's an extremely unnecessary long shot of Chuck writing, it pans through the room and the last image is of a stack of Supernatural books: Route 666, Mystery Spot, and Home.
-If they had put it in the episode, I probably would have tried to analyze the books they had used for secret messages: like, Route 666=Dean, Mystery Spot=Dean dies, Sam is crazy, Home=Dean cries. :-P
