SPN Canon AUs....

I got caught up with Mark Watches tonight - he just finished S5 and has started S6.

It got me thinking about what Canon AUs are out there that have a divergent point at the end of 5x22. It was such a big break for the show, such an end point/beginning point, where they really could have gone anywhere from there in terms of plot and characters...

And it got me curious about what storylines other people came up with.... like, for instance, stories like ratherastory's Fusion'verse - where Sam claws his way out of hell and is left with psychological problems and it's essentially a hurt/comfort curtain fic from there....

But there's gotta be other ones, right? There has to be more people who wrote their own versions of what happened after 5x22....

Of course, the problem is that I don't ship things in SPN, so.. yeah, maybe there aren't any stories out there for me - since I don't want Dean/Cas or Sam/Dean....

Blah, I always forget that bit about how hard it is for me to find good fic in the SPN fandom. Especially good fic post S4, when all the Dean/Cas shipping starts. Sigh.

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations anyway, let me know...

Have you ever read ficwriter1966's Hope verse? She started before the end of season 5, and she never follows canon directly there, just kind of handwaves that there was a huge battle, the boys won, and now they are moving on. It is my truly happy au when the show gets too depressingly insistent on breaking the boys' and my hearts.

There are some great ones! But I mostly remember reading them, I don't know if I've got any bookmarked. I think though that more common jumping off points AU wise were either AUs that branched off from season 5 (either different endings or came up with more interesting versions of the apocalypse) or that jumped off somewhere in the beginning of season 6. Very few post-5x22s, unlike with season 3.

I was going to try to find some things to rec, but then I started looking through the gen section of the j2 bb for 2009-2012 and also through the gen big bang and um now it's two hours later and I still haven't found the fic I was looking for.

It's odd that more people didn't chose 5x22 as their divergent point. But midway through S6 could work too... the only AU I've ever written had a jumping off point of somewhere in the first half of S6.

The status at the beginning of six was interesting because it offered a lot of possibilities, depending on where you wanted to go. The end of 5x22...I mean, there's Sam, but it's less...IDK. It's just harder to expand a story from that. I wrote a one-shot that was kind of like a giant AU in my head right before season 6 started, but one of the things that kept me from pulling the trigger, so to speak, on the larger AU was that there were enough rumors swirling around about season 6 that it seemed like they might go somewhere interesting.

I *wish* I could find/remember the fic I was thinking of. I don't quite think it fits your interests, but it was stunningly beautiful. With such strong imagery that I'm not sure if it had any art attached to it, because I keep thinking "maybe" and then remembering that what's in my head was actually a text description. I think- I think it was about Dean going into hell to save Sam. And it was all very 9 circles of hell. And the devil at the bottom, in a frozen lake. Compass. Compass something? Maybe it was a summer gen. Maybe it had art with a compass on it.

I suppose you have a point. Splitting off at 5x22 gives too many possibilities, whereas splitting off mid-S6 is sort of more like being given a prompt - and people tend to work better off prompts.

Hmm... that does sound interesting. Maybe if I go looking for fic, I'll see if I can find it based on that description. But you never know, I ask for recs, and then I remember how goddamn picky I am when it comes to spn fic. :P

It's going to drive me crazy. The imagery in my head is SO clear but the story isn't. (Dean finds a bird's skull in the mud after a field of corpses. There's a road lined with trees. Pandemonium is empty. Dean has a guide, I think. Maybe. The guide is...someone. It's revealed.

Seconding the above recs and adding a ♥♥♥ for Fusion!verse and a rec for immortal_jedi's Heaven, Hell, and a Mechanic AU--Sam's Lord of Hell with Adam as his lieutenant; Cas is the new sheriff in Heaven; and Dean's a mechanic in Cicero. It's gen with background Dean/Lisa, mostly gentle fics with a lot of humor.
And a handful of self-recs: Deaf!Dean starts immediately after 5.22, with the discovery Dean's been left deaf after Stull; Tok'ra Apocalypse (which is a Stargate crossover) actually goes AU from 5.19 but more significantly so from 5.22; and Dinéchesters is AU from the start but diverges most strongly from canon after 5.22 in the last "The Dark Wind" story. There's Dean/Lisa in all three, but it's not really the focus of any one story, and Diné!Sam gets a surprise het pairing in that last TDW story as well. I've also got a stand-alone AU coming for the Gen BB, but that won't be posting until October.

Thanks! I've actually read Heaven, Hell, and the Mechanic - it was entertaining, but pretty light - I think currently I'm in the mood for something that matches the show's tone a little more.

I can't help but pimp my 5.22+ verse, which is called the Promise Verse. It's Dean/Lisa but rated PG. The stories are linked together and told from different characters' pov, including Dean, Sam, Lisa, Bobby, and Cas.

I tried to base it as closely on canon at the end of 5.22 as possible, and extrapolated from there. It was all written that summer, so there are no other spoilers.

alexjanna91 has this AMAZING series called "Dean's Adventures in Babysitting". it's where he and Lisa didn't -- quire -- work out but she lets him stay there and he finds himself in charge of an impromptu daycare. it's better than my summary makes it sound, I promise!
