I am so far behind on what I needed to get done today, but I just took an hour to write this... so, my dedication to June Ficlets is still strong!

Today the dice chose another prompt from yalumesse's 30 day prompt list. (see previous entry for the link, I'm lazy.)

The Prompt: two characters communicating without words and/or having to verbally mislead a third character.

I went with, primarily, the first bit of the prompt, though I do think I have a touch of the second part too...

It's another Marvel Cinema Universe fic, because I couldn't resist using my headcanon for Hawkeye while I still have a chance. He's still pretty much a blank page when it comes to the MCU, so nothing I've written has technically been jossed. There's optional Clint/Natasha in this story too, if you go for that kind of thing.

Words Optional
Words: 785
Spoiler warning: This takes place post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier; and therefore also post-S1 Agents of SHIELD.

Clint went to Tony’s tower as soon as he landed in New York. Natasha was already there. Between her and Tony, they filled in all of the information that Clint was missing about what exactly happened in DC and how deep SHIELD had been compromised. It was a lot to take in – he found consolation in the fact that Natasha was just as angry as he was about finding herself on the wrong side yet again.

He and Natasha shared commiserating looks and eye-rolls, while Tony ranted about how he had known all along that SHIELD was up to no good (he hadn’t), and that he had never wanted to make those engines for project InSight in the first place (he had), and that he was a genius for keeping all his important tech secrets to himself (that, Clint had to begrudgingly admit, was true.)

“So, that’s it then?” Clint concluded. “We’re free agents.” The thought settled oddly in his bones, one part freeing, one part terrifying.

“With certain loyalties,” Natasha added with a smile.

“Well, it’d certainly be wise to stay loyal to me, at least” Tony said, completely missing Natasha’s meaning. “Where else are you going to get your tech now?”

Clint laughed and then realized what that meant.

“Well you certainly know how to make a guy feel loved,” Tony glared. “It’s not like there’s any difference. My company probably made everything SHIELD outfitted you with anyway.”

“Not everything,” Clint muttered.

That got Tony’s full attention, and Clint cursed himself for even mentioning it.

Natasha shot Clint a slightly concerned look and mouthed, ‘How many?’

Clint held up a finger.

“I can deal,” Clint shrugged, and slumped back into Tony’s ridiculously expensive furniture.

Surprisingly, when Tony spoke next, Clint could hear actual concern in his voice, instead of him being just being infuriatingly nosy. “Whatever it is, I might be able to reverse engineer it.”

Clint glanced over at Natasha. If he gave his only one to Tony, then he’d have to go without until Tony figured out how it worked. Natasha raised an eyebrow. Yeah, it was better to give it to Tony before he lost it on some mission and then had absolutely nothing for Tony to reverse-engineer.

“Yeah, okay,” Clint said, without looking away from Natasha. She nodded approvingly.

“It’s really creepy when you two do that, you know,” Tony said.

Clint didn’t bother commenting on that. He just tilted his head to one side, and pressed his baby finger into his ear, pulling it out to reveal a small dark object. He held it out to Tony.

“Gross,” Tony mouthed, then seemed to clue into what he was looking at, and immediately darted forward. His mouth was still moving, but it was too fast for Clint to read, his voice sounded like Clint was listening to him from the bottom of a swimming pool... which, is ironically, where he had lost the other hearing aid for his other ear.

Tony was already pulling up screens on the bench across the room, his mouth still moving. Clint looked over at Natasha, who rolled her eyes.

Blah blah blah.... Natasha signed. Clint bit back a laugh. At First, he thought it was a comm-link, wondered who you were working with.

Clint rolled his eyes.

He figured out truth quick, Natasha continued. He wants to know design flaws?

“They short out sometimes if I get submerged in water, that’s how I lost the other one,” Clint answered aloud. “If I’m roughed up enough, they sometimes fall out. Usually only happens if someone hits me in the ear, though, and I tend to have more pressing problems than being deaf if that happens. I like that they’re small, but it means I can’t find them if I even get a chance to look.”

Natasha smiled at him. Across the room, Tony was still talking.

Blah blah blah... Natasha repeated. He’ll make them better. He likes the challenge... blah blah blah...

I think I prefer this way of talking to Tony, Clint signed. Maybe I should tell him not to bother and just stay deaf.

I am too expensive to be your permanent translator, Natasha replied.

What happened to the loyalty? Clint signed, eyes wide and touching his chest as though she had hurt his feelings.

I’m not that loyal, sweetheart, Natasha smirked. Then she burst out with a laugh that Clint could only just hear.

He JUST realized that you can’t hear him, Natasha explained.

Clint laughed. “About time, Genius, these past five minutes have really instilled me with confidence in your intelligence, I have to say.”

Tony flipped him off.

Seems Tony doesn’t need a translator after all, Natasha smiled.

The End.

Hee! I love it. And I love that Tony took a while to realise that they are, in fact, hearing aids and not comm links. :D

Thanks for the fic! I think Clint is my favourite character, and Tony was great here, all enthusiasm for technology, and not realising Clint can't hear him.

I'm glad you liked it! I've got a soft spot for archers, so Clint is possibly my favourite too. I'm interested to see when they start fleshing out his character more in the movies. :)

Thanks! Part of the credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] franztastisch, who pointed out that I could use my deaf!Clint headcanon for a prompt like that. :)
