YAY SUPERNATURAL IS BACK!
THUNDERSTRUCK! Awesome! Blood effect for title: DOUBLE AWESOME!
The plane thing at the beginning was crazy!
What to say, what to say....as I told my sister afterward, Supernatural always feels like watching a movie to me...at the end of it, it seems like the beginning was so long ago, I can barely remember what happened.
Susie likes the fact that the show can make fun of itself and it's fanbase, but not in a way that removes us from the show...not in a way that cheapens the overall plot. Personally, I just love the fact that the show actually had the guts to reference the weird slash subculture. Personally, I'm not a fan of Wincest, and I don't really like the idea of people solely associating Wincest with the fanbase, and not really realizing that there are fans who aren't into that....but I have to admit that having it on the show was hilarious...especially the fact that she used the word "clavical" in porn. And that her name was Becky (my apologies to anyone named Becky who reads this).
On more serious notes:
BOBBY!
Holy crap, my jaw dropped when he told Sam to lose his number...but then as soon as he started telling Dean that maybe John was right, I knew it wasn't really Bobby. I totally called it. I should have called it on his disowning of Sam, but I was too shocked to put two and two together at that point.
And the look on his face when he got enough strength to stab himself instead of Dean...man...I love the fact that both John and Bobby's love for Dean is enough for them to fight off demon-possession. And then that shot of them wheeling Bobby away in the hospital...and how Sam wanted to stay but Dean made them go to the storage locker...this show really grabs you by the heart and pulls!
Then the angels...
And man, the line before the commercial break of Dean being Michael's sword immediately cast my mind back to the line about being "Daddy's blunt little instrument", not a son but a weapon, not a person but a weapon....and I didn't know where they were going with it, but then we find out that he's the VESSEL for Michael...crazy! I think it's such a cool part of the mythology that it seems to be only select humans that can host angels, and then beyond that it seems to be SPECIFIC humans for certain angels - like Lucifer can ONLY be that dude he's messing with...and Michael can ONLY be Dean. Castiel can obviously be anyone - or at least, Jimmy or his daughter. And Castiel must have known Dean was Michael's vessel too, and that's why he tried to talk to him in 4x01 without a host....
Then we get Resurrected!Castiel. YAY! This wasn't a surprise, since I knew Misha had been signed on as a regular so Cas couldn't really be dead. But Cas finally gets to kick some ass, and then yell at Zachariah, and tell us that it wasn't the angels or demons that put the Winchesters out of harms way...which, to me, means that God hasn't left the building...and the fact that Zachariah is scared by that thought is awesome. But then Cas disappears again...
So John Winchester DID have the Michael sword the whole time, it just wasn't in storage...it was driving around in his car wearing his old leather jacket and listening to classic rock, and carrying half his DNA.
And Bobby might not walk again...oh man...there will be less Bobby Ex Machina, I guess.
I like the fact that Dean gave this whole motivational speech to cheer Bobby up...and doesn't actually believe it.
I like the fact that the whole episode the boys just DON'T TALK ABOUT IT - because honestly, anything else would be out of character. I like the fact that in the end, Dean tells Sam the truth though - that Sam choose a demon over family and that's a worse sin than letting Lucifer free in Dean's book, and the look on Sam's face when he realizes it's not Dean's anger he has to contend with, it's a deserved lack of trust...it's so much worse, given how those two have relied on each other their entire lives.
So, sure, they didn't address the Voice-mail Of Doom, but I'll forgive them for that - Dean doesn't know what Sam heard, and Sam obviously clued into the fact that Dean wasn't going to kill him, when Dean told him that they were just going to do what they always do. Who knows if it'll ever come up...I still want it to, but I'll forgive them if it doesn't.
Oh! And I forgot to say how much I LOVE Bobby for telling Sam that he'd never disown him. I <3 Bobby.
Oh! And best Dean line - the "Angel Condom" comment! lol.
And...we also learn that Dean has a GED :-)
Is it next week yet?

Date: 2009-09-11 07:37 am (UTC)It got lost in the epicness of the Show for me too...I was reminded by someone else's review and quickly added it in :-P

Date: 2009-09-11 07:35 am (UTC)I really loved the scene with Dean saying no, and not just because Castiel showed up after apparently taking a few levels in badass. I'm a bit too tired to elaborate properly, but it felt like...the end point of a lot of character development. Well, maybe end point is the wrong word. payoff, maybe?

Date: 2009-09-11 07:42 am (UTC)I think we DID need the two minute angst at the end though, because as much as it was in-character not to talk about it, they NEED to talk about it to move on, and for me it wasn't a negative moment. Dean was being honest, and that's more than I can say for the Winchesters all last season. For me it was a good thing - you can't move forward unless you are honest about where you are.
As for "the pep-talk was a lie" thing...I think it's understandable. Ever since John died, Dean has been getting "tired", I don't think that's changed over the past year (it's probably just gotten worse)...so yeah, I understood why it was a lie.
But yeah, I think the writers were trying to cram a TON of stuff into that first episode, and some things got a little patchworked.

Date: 2009-09-11 08:32 am (UTC)But still, maybe they could have stuck the emotional stuff somewhere in the middle, as to break the pattern. They've done it that way (Dean has an emotional moment at the very last minute) a few too many times. They need to shake it up a bit so it doesn't feel tacked on even when it's not.
