So, I was super bored tonight, because of no new show, and I also didn't feel like writing (because I suck), so I figured I'd catch up on some of my timelining and watch Blood Brother 8x05 again...

I'VE DISCOVERED FACTUAL TREASURES!

Firstly, yes, Supernatural has indeed done the "soap-opera year" and despite being "one year later", it is still somehow 2012.





Secondly, Kevin Tran's date of birth is December 2nd 1993, making him nearly 19 years old, which is actually a little old to be starting university, isn't it? Maybe he did an extra year of kindergarten like yours truly...all the smart kids do it, I hear which is exactly the right age to be starting university, good job, Kevin!

Kevin is also an Agnostic, and he's using a credit card under the pseudonym Kevin Park.

We also get to find out Amelia's DOB: April 20th 1980, making her three years older than Sam.

I started university at 19, but then I did that "extra" year in CEGEP, which I think is essentially the equivalent of freshman year in university.

I wish SPN would pick a name other than "Amelia" for its female characters from now on. I blame Carver. He's the one who seems to like the name. It's the third time he's used it.

I had the extra year of kindergarten AND 5 years of high school because I was still around when they had the OAC year. So, yeah, I actually turned 20 in my first year of university. :P

Is Kevin 19 after the year he's basically spent on the run? Because if he's 19 NOW, after Dean's Purgatory year, then when he was applying to college, he would have been 18. Right?

He's 19 on Dec. 2nd, 2012, so yes, 18 when he was applying...is that the usual age in America? I actually just don't know. In the province I grew up in the current norm is to be 17 while applying to college and 18 during freshman year. (Personally, I think this is too young - but it's legitimately the norm now).

Because of the time-skip, Kevin is both 19 during his year on the run and turning 19 this December. :P

I think the problem with the name Amelia is that I like to shorten it to "Amy" in my head, so therefore it feels like there's been more of them. :P Also, both Amelia Novak and Amelia Richardson are arguably important characters, so I kind of wish they had gotten more distinct names (I know we only see Amelia Novak once, but still, she's Jimmy's WIFE.)

Yeah, I'd say Kevin was at the normal age in America. It just depends what month you're born in...but for a December baby, then yeah, definitely typical. I myself am a July baby, so I was still 17 when actually applying, but 18 when my freshmen year started. *shrugs*

Ah, I see. I'm just curious about what the other person said, that this was the third time they'd used "Amelia". But if they're including Sam's monster friend AMY, then okay, my mind hasn't blanked as much as I'd thought. :P

Oh, I definitely agree with you, that they should have used a different name for Amelia Richardson, because it keeps weirding me out and bugging me, especially as I don't see why she has to be named that anyway. But then, I'm nitpicky, and if I think about it some more, it ends up bugging me that there have technically been three Michaels (angel Michael, werewolf Michael, and little boy Michael, ftr), that I can recall, on the show, and that we've now got Benny and Ben Braedan, and we definitely know that Benny is short for Benjamin, and it wouldn't be a stretch to assume the same for Ben. Not to mention Pastor Jim and Jimmy, and the two Joshuas (angel Josh and hunter Josh), and Annie and Anna. *headdesk* Oh, and the three Samuels, and Dean/Deanna. :P

Haha, yeah, Ben Braeden is a Benjamin, Lisa even says it in one of the episodes. Ben and Michael don't bother me so much because they're such common names - Amelia is less common. Same with Jim and Joshua (not that Hunter Joshua was never actually seen - again it's how important the part is for me).

Who the heck is the third Samuel? :P

I guess after 8 years, they're just running out of names...but I don't think they've ever had a Laura or a Simone or a Lola or a Thea... so, I just think they could have gone with someone other than Amelia.

Or, you know, Sam could not have gotten a love interest and have had our heads beaten over with their ~similarities~. Or he could have hooked up with Sarah Blake. I have always wished that she could come back. *sigh* But then, if he'd ended up with Sarah we'd have a situation more reminiscent of Dean/Lisa than Sam being weird and mysterious and blah. :/

Hell, I think I'm gonna have to start shipping it now. It shall be my alternative and such things. I love me my crack ships. XD :P Woot, I've pretty much gained two crack ships in one week! (By the way, did you know that Adam/Samandriel has been picking up popularity over on AO3? I swear that I've seen at least three stories with that pairing. XD)

Well, Samuel Colt gets a pass because he's a historical figure - and who knows, Samuel Campbell may have been named after him and then Sam was named after Samuel, so yeah...I forgive all those (including Dean and Deanna for the same reasons).

I don't think Sarah Blake would have worked out because Sam has gone through WAY too much since then - I think he knows that he can never go back to her, because he's not the same person he was, and she probably still is the same person (and hell, probably married to someone else by now) and they'd have absolutely nothing in common. And yes, then it'd be a Dean/Lisa situation and that would add a whole other layer to the story that they probably don't want.

I know that things have changed a hell of a lot since season 1, and that Sarah is probably married and I'm pretty sure not coming back, but I still think she would have been a good influence for Sam all the way, and I miss her. Plus, I just love her much more than Amelia R, who's kind of weirding me out a bit sometimes. Not to mention that I can't help but feel that the writers are sort of shoving her onto us, and I just...don't like it. But I'm reserving judgement or something, so who knows.

But anyway, Sarah coming back is just one of my idle wishes...like Dean and Co. raising Bobby John or Jesse and Ronald living and coming along with Dean and Sam in season 2 to be the Robin to their Batmans, or Victor living. :P

Ah yes, the lure of the myriad of alternate universes and different paths that could have been taken.... I understand completely. :)

I think there was an interview done recently where Jared explained that the first half of this season is really about Dean, and the second half is going to be about Sam...so, I think what we have of Amelia so far isn't enough for us to get a clear picture of who she is - because they haven't given us enough information ON PURPOSE...so, yeah, I think that's to come. Who knows, maybe we aren't supposed to like her?

Seriously? Boo. I really liked my hypothesis concerning 2014!Dean of 5x04 and 2014!Dean of S8. Not that there was much to it, I haven't seen 8x03 or later, but it was definitely an intriguing hypothesis and I liked it.

Well, even if they hadn't skipped a year, because of the year they skipped in S6, it would have only been 2013. :P

But, I have seen the theory floating around that they're still on the path somehow to 2014!End'verse, so maybe we'll see what S10 looks like. ;)

19 kind of makes sense if his birthday's in december, I think, because of grade cut-off dates. And even beyond that, there's a friend of mine who is six months younger than I am, but she graduated from college in 2008 as opposed to my 2006. Hmm, let me think about this.

Being born in December, he wouldn't have started kindergarten in 1998, because of school cut off dates, which means he would have started in the fall of '99. (Urgh, I'm old. I was in my second year of high school). And that means he graduated high school in June 2012, if I'm doing my math right, meaning he'd be starting college right before his 19th birthday. Ta-da!

Ah cool! So he's not old at all. I don't know what the heck is the usual for the states (or anywhere) anymore. I, too, am old, and also in a different country where the rules are sometimes different depending what province you are living in. :)

Glad to help :) There's a good deal of variation between states and counties and school districts here too, but as much as they different places might fudge things elsewhere (notable mention goes to a district I know of that has "pre-first", an extra grade for kids that finished kindergarten but aren't ready for first grade), some things stay the same. And I'd be pretty much in the dark for this but for working three years for the Girl Scouts, where these issues came up a lot.

Good call, but it's definitely December - look at the left-hand side of the screen at the college application/admission form - the birthday is listed as Date: 02 Month: 12 Year: 1993.

So, the credit union form is actually probably some Canadian crew member doing things the British way (here in Canadaland we like to confuse each other by using both American and British systems willy nilly) :P

I almost wondered if they back tracked on Kevin's age on purpose so he would be an adult because then they could kill him if needed without killing a minor. They seem squeemish about harming minors. How would it be if Crowley cut a "kids"finger off.

Kevin's birthday works in the US. Most schools have a cut off around December first. So Kevin would have started Kindergarten at 5 and turned 6 soon after.

They're idiots with the dates. Clearly Kevin is a year older, but, it's still 2012! As far as I'm concerned its 2014.

I'm sure they purposefully made Kevin 18+ - I mean, I think Osric is 26 or something ridiculous, but it also gives them more range of storyline...not just for potentially killing him, but for torture (as you point out) and also for any romantic storyline they might want to give him. It just gives them more freedom.

I'm guessing that Samandriel is also riding around in an 18 year-old for that reason too - though they haven't confirmed that.

As far as I'm concerned as well it's 2014. It's not like they actually reference current events (besides the entertainment industry) so I don't see why they insist on keeping the Winchesters in the our present.

The other reason of Kevin's age could be that kids after a certain part of the year are not allowed to start school until the following year.

So he might have started in kindergarten when he was 5 going on 6.

Yup, I'm sure that's what happened. It's not too out of the ordinary to start first grade when you're already six years old.
