Okay...so, AO3 has this nifty feature where you can download the fic directly from the site.

This would save me a lot of time with the demented'verse, since I've been emailing out the PDF on an individual basis at least once a month, and sometimes multiple times per week. As much as I really don't mind emailing out the pdfs, it DOES mean that not only do people have to disclose their email addresses to me, I have to disclose mine to them. Which, you know, on the one hand is kind of cool, since sometimes I have little conversations - while on the other hand...I don't know what the other hand is actually, I mean, I haven't encountered any psychos so far, but that doesn't mean that my luck will hold out?

Maybe I just thought maybe it'd be easier to store my fic on AO3?

Who knows what I'm thinking (I certainly don't).

ANYWAY...apparently you need an invite to get an AO3 account...now, I could put myself in their queue, but I could also just ask my flist:

Does anyone have an AO3 invite that they don't mind sending my way? Thanks [livejournal.com profile] baruchan!

Sorry this post is so disjointed. I've just been writing and the character I was writing was sort of in a weird mental place and, being the empathetic person that I am, I can now not string a coherent sentence together.

P.S: Everyone enjoying those Jared on the beach photos today? I will admit that in a moment of weakness, I ignore my personal rule of not viewing paparazzi pics. The personal moral corruption was worth it.

I don't have invites, sorry, although yeah it does seem like a good idea to put my fics on AO3 too... I just wanted to say:

The personal moral corruption was worth it

YES. I have fluctuating personal moral values when it comes to pap pics, and this is one set of pics that I don't mind corrupting my morals for LOL

I have an invite code that I haven't used yet. What email address should I send it to?

Sent!

I'm so glad you'll be posting your fic to AO3; once I started reading fic there, I fell in love with their system immediately. (It's also easier to download files to read on my phone, heh.)

Got it! Thanks! I'm setting up my account now. I might be waiting until tomorrow to start uploading fic...but I'll make an announcement here when I do. :)

That they were - nice to see he hasn't gained any baby-weight ;) (men get it too, I swear!)

Lol! Do they? XD Even if he had gained some weight, I still think he'd be ridiculously gorgeous. o///o

Haha, *I* think they do, anyway. But it's true, Jared would look good regardless. ;)

It seems many people do! I'm ever increasingly following links to fic over there - so I figured I might as well sign up and learn how it works. ;)

I've got the account set up now, and will probably look into copying my stories over tomorrow - I'll be posting here when it's all there. I may just move my favourite stories over. :P

I don't know if you've got an account on ffnet or not, but I tend to post my stories on LJ, then ffnet, and then import from ffnet into AO3- the importation process from ffnet->AO3 is super easy.

I kind of hate ffnet, so I don't have an account there.

Which is too bad, because I'd love a swift importation process. Ah well!

I originally started posting fic on ffnet because I figured that as a newbie writer, everything I was going to write was going to suck...I figured that at least on ffnet, I'd be blending in. But I've kept with it because I'm a complete comment/review addict and while I'll never beg for 'em, I am not above posting fic in multiple places in order to get the widest audience possible. (On the whole, I've gotten far more reviews on that site than on LJ....which probably doesn't say great things about my writing abilities, but ah well.)

I think it says that you are far too good for ffnet. :)

Kind of apropos of nothing, but I just realized I apply the same standard to ffnet reviews as I do to yelp reviews- that is, I am skeptical to fics and restaurants that are super popular with hundreds of glowing reviews, and automatically gravitate towards those with a smaller number of reviews, especially if they're occasionally kind of finicky.

From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
I think that's a good strategy! I only go on ffnet if I'm directed there from elsewhere - so, I never pay attention to the number of reviews, as I've usually just come from one that I trust.

I don't tend to do straight searches, unless I'm curious to see if there's some random crossover for something- AO3 tends to be too small to really see if something obscure has been used in a crossover before- but I do tend to surf through author's favorites. There are several good authors that are (bizarrely) ffnet only, but I usually only find them through the whole six degrees of separation thing via the favorites.

There used to be good authors on ffnet in one of my old fandoms...but I find in my current fandoms, I don't have much luck. But that's a good idea to go through the favourites of the good authors!

You should totally join AO3 (and I'm glad someone had an invite for you). There's a lot of good fic on there, the download format thing is super handy, and there are some perks from the writer's POV too.

And I'm not just saying this because I recently got an ereader and am looking to fill it up with long fic, no. Of course not.

From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
Haha, thanks :)

I'm looking forward to exploring it. First things first is to get my fic over there.

All these features kind of make me want to get an ereader too.

I was so resistant to ereaders for so long. I don't like DRM or devices that lock you in to one market (e.g. amazon for kindle, etc). But I love it so much now.

Mostly because of the fic. It's a great way to read long fics- a lot easier on the eyes, and it looks totally respectable also,in public. And I'm really digging the 3G connection. It makes for fairly limited browsing, but it works well enough to download stuff off AO3, and even read lj etc.

Yeah, DRM and such have been keeping me away too...but I wouldn't mind getting one for fic. Though, with my current lifestyle, when I'm out and about, I don't have time to read - but things might change in the future. It's definitely on my To Buy When I'm Wealthy list.

I finally bit the bullet after buying one for my mother for Christmas and then getting addicted to it over the holiday. Well, no, that was nearly half a year ago. That's what convinced me I wanted to get one at some point; the reason I got one now is that the model I wanted was getting phased out. I wanted a 3G connection, which basically meant getting a kindle, but I wanted the one with the keyboard (it makes life easier, especially with the internet access)...& the touch screen ones have contrast issues, apparently. But the keyboard ones are like two generations ago, so I decided to get one before they were no longer available. I got the last one in town (at least at the big retail stores- could have ordered it online, but I didn't want to wait.)

Damn. I'd want one with a keyboard too. I'm the old-fashioned sort and I like it when my computers have buttons. ;)

Ah well, maybe by the time I buy one, they'll have a design that I like too.

And there's always ebay. If they don't, you can just buy a slightly older one for cheap! Gotta love the internet.
