Everybody Loves a Clown....

So, we're rudely shaken out of our denial by the simple beginning (you know...once we get past the usual teaser "death" intro)...with just the two boys, sitting in the dark, staring at nothing. 

As someone who makes a timeline, I was very happy to have them tell me how much time was passing. :) Yay! As someone who loves the Winchesters, I was extremely sad to see them extremely sad.

I thought the whole episode was very similar to Everybody Loves a Clown (2x02) - you know, the episode that followed immediately from John's death. Yes, it was a monster of the week, but it was also extremely sad - and just like Everybody Loves a Clown (2x02), the brother's different ways of grieving drive them apart rather than pull them together.

Sam, typically, wants to do something POSITIVE/ACTIVE. If he can't solve the riddle of Bobby's final "words", then he wants to help some anonymous girl on the phone. If he can't hunt Dick Roman, he wants to hunt A monster, any monster - and feel like he's doing something good in the world.

Dean, typically, wants to drown in his sadness. He wants to not eat or sleep or take care of himself until the riddle is solved - he wants Bobby to be alive and he wants it all to be over and he wants revenge - and anything that is NOT one of those things is not worth his time.

So, they split up - which is NEVER A GOOD IDEA, BOYS!

But before we get to that - let's talk about the beer! What was with that beer? Dean didn't remember drinking it - and Sam didn't drink it...and right before Dean noticed it was empty, there was that odd sound effect... Do you guys think that maybe, just maybe...Bobby chose to stay behind? Four weeks though, and all we get is a vanishing beer? A hunter who chooses to be a ghost? Even Dean was nearly talked out of it in In My Time of Dying, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone more devoted to sticking with his family than S2 Dean....

But, we don't find out about the beer - and there are no more weird occurrences (that I noticed.) 

Sam goes to meet Young Girl (I'm so horrible with names). I love how they both talk around hunting. I love how you can tell that she probably knows. I love that little mole underneath her left eye - that's a really cool "beauty mark" (as my mum calls them).

Girl's dad is being drained by a Viter...Vito....Vit...a NEW MONSTER! Cool....I liked the look of them - very, lizardy. So, Sam calls Dean to let him know what's going on - only Dean doesn't pick up, because he is busy sleeping for 36 hours.

And I love how in this episode everyone kept telling Dean that he looked horrible...personally, um, I really couldn't see it, haha. Dean just does not look horrible - he looks pissed off, sad, and exasperated - but not horrible. They could have at least put a bit more make-up on him (or less? No, who am I kidding, it's Jensen) to MAKE him look horrible....

We get Frank again! He's hip to the Leviathans now. He's still paranoid, bipolar, whatever...I like that he's self-aware about it. So often these days, you get "crazy" characters who don't seem to realize that they are "crazy" - whereas everyone I know who is "crazy" is actually very aware of what they've been diagnosed with (at least when they're on their medication).

So, are the numbers really just a field in Wisconsin? Or is that just one interpretation that happens to also fit something Dick Roman is doing? I guess only time will tell.

Anyway, we find out Frank's wife and kids were murdered back in the day and he advises Dean that Dean only has two choices: He either lives or he dies - and living involves faking it, if he has to, to get by. It's actually pretty sound advice. I've known people who have lived through rough times on very similar methods. 

Dean finally gets Sam's message and realizes that Sam has it all wrong. Of course he does - he's ALONE. 

I forget where it was in the episode - but I really liked Sam goading the monsters into drinking from him instead of Girl's Father. (Sidenote: Girls' Father lives not very far from me. Ah Vancouver, so small.). Sam really had shades of Soulless!Sam when he was talking to the monster - you know, he's so SOULFUL with his soul, that I forget sometimes that that other Sam is still inside him somewhere.

I also liked that this was a monster that DEAN knew more about than ANYONE. John met one once and (quite unscientifically) used that one encounter to build a profile for the entire species - not realizing that it was the exception. By the way Dean said "I guess your father also had it wrong" (or whatever the line was) it made me think that there was a possibility that John's wrong information was spread to other Hunters - and Dean knew it. 

I also liked the fact that 7 years later, we get talk about a hunt that Dean did solo while Sam was at college. That's cool. 

It's also neat, 7 years later, how we see Dean has finally come around on the college thing (we got a hint of this in Defending Your Life, when Dean expressed guilt for dragging Sam back into the life)...but I like that he talks about college as though it's something that Young Girl can do, not as "yeah, I can't believe Sam ABANDONED HIS FAMILY FOR NO REASON" (Sorry, it just really pisses me off when people are STILL writing that in fic...the boys have had far bigger problems since then - I know Dean was still upset about it in S5, but yeah...that was 3 Winchester years ago, and Sam has DIED since then. I think Dean realizes that there's worse things.)

Anyway - we also find out that Girl really does know everything about Hunting, but hasn't been on a Hunt herself. We also find out that her mother was killed by something and she witnessed it.

You know, Hunting is a really interesting subculture - everyone enters it through tragedy (except possibly the Campbells). It's full of revenge-driven mourners. (And I'm sure for the Campbells, if they don't start off revenge-driven, they end up that way BECAUSE of hunting.) And then even when they get their revenge, they stay - they keep fighting...maybe they have nothing left to live for, or maybe they just want to save others the same fate...or, maybe their revenge is just never satisfied until there's not a monster left in the world...but yeah, interesting.

Anyway, after a slightly weird and disorganized Monster take down - it's off to the hospital. Dean tries to convince Girl's Father to retire - and Girl's Father asks if Dean ever knew anyone who left "the life" - and Dean says no, they all died first. I kind of wanted to point out that DEAN had left "the life", but I guess we're all ignoring that year now? Or, well, maybe Dean's right, since Dean DID die before that happened....or maybe it's not worth mentioning, since obviously it wasn't a successful retirement.

Then they have a conversation about their feelings in the car - Sam, typically, is very honest. Dean, typically, is not. Then Sam has the best closing move to a conversation ever. *Nod, turn on tune, SLEEP!* Hahaha...he's ADORABLE! I want to do that. "Good talk, here listen to some tunes while I nap." It's like people who put on the radio for their pets so that they won't be lonely. :P

And then Dean is ALL HEARTBROKEN. Oh man....the false smiles. Dean, why must you always break my heart? Again, though, VERY reminiscent of Everybody Loves a Clown, where Sam leaves at the end, and we see Dean break down...different form of breakdown, but it's still there.

I pretty much agree with everything you said here. As far as the beer thing, Bobby did choose to stay behind remember? The reaper came and was bugging him to leave, move on, etc. He told him, "you know what you'll become right?" And Bobby said he was staying anyway and that's when we had that scene of Dean and Sam arguing over licorice. So, he def did not go with the reaper. I can attest to that much. I really hope the beer thing was Bobby! Ghost!Bobby! Hell, any type of Bobby. They can't kill him for good. He's too valuable of a character, imo.

One thing I do hope they address is the loss of time Dean seems to be experiencing. Like the beer thing was it a little bit, but also when he shows up at Frank's and Frank told him to cool it, it'd only been 4 days? Dean says no, it's been 4 weeks? That's a lot of time to just misplace. I doubt very much Frank was wrong when he said it'd only been 4 days. After all, he's not overrrun with grief at the moment and is thinking clearly...or well, whatever clearly is for him.

I'd like to say I have a theory on what Dick and Co. are up to, but idk if it would be right. It's based off that old ep guide on imdb.com a ways back. They've removed it since then, but it stated one ep would be the guys trying to lead the Leviathans back into Hell/Purgatory through the Hellmouth. The ep was actually titled "Not Fade Away," like one of the last eps of Angel. Idk how reliable that was, but I could see them doing something along those lines. Like the Leviathans are wanting to build a new Devil's Gate or entrance to Purgatory disguised as a, idk, meat packing plant or something.

Would love to see some helpful!Crowley soon. He's an opportunist, I think he'll pop up again sometime. Dean struggling not to cry and forcing himself to smile at the end? D: No bueno. It made me sad. I'm interested to see how they work on Dean and his grief like with S2.

Actually this is wrong - the VERY last scene was Dean and Sam disappearing from the memory, and the Reaper saying "Well Bobby, stay or go, what's it going to be?" and Bobby gives us a little smile.

So, Bobby hadn't made the choice yet. That being said...

They can't kill him for good. He's too valuable of a character, imo.

Yeah, my friend floated this idea too. Also - sleeping for 36 hours is a LITTLE fishy...I don't know know though, I mean, Dean said it had been 4 weeks in the cabin too, and Sam didn't argue. So did Sam lose time as well? Or is it really that Frank IS that crazy...

Likewise, and Sam's too. Dean's not alone in this, and Sam also has the whole "plagued by hell" thing too. If they have him seemingly fine for many more episode, I might start to get annoyed - because there's no plausible way that boy is as fine as he's wanting us to believe.

Dean says Dick is at a TED conference. they are held twice a year, and the closest one (and the one in the US) is Feb 27 – Mar 2, 2012!!!!!. The next one is June in Scotland, so unlikely to be that.

Mind you, it's the kind of things the writers aren't likely to look up either, so I'll have to cross my fingers that they don't make the next episode set on Feb 27th (because they do that kind of stuff to me ALL THE TIME).

well, i am wondering if there isn't some tie in with Feb 29th. Maybe something is going on not with dean but with time itself, and Feb 29th would be a good tie in to weird time things!

No one else has remarked on how the writers played with us for the first several minutes about what actually happened to Bobby. The boys keep alluding to something but it isn't until Sam tells Krissy at her door that Bobby 'passed on' that we get the definite 'he's dead'--until that moment I was vainly hoping (aware that I was grasping at straws) that he was still in a coma. Though I really knew the boys wouldn't have left the hospital if that was the case...

Interesting comparison to how the boys reacted to John's death--then, Dean was focused on fixing the car, something he could control, and Sam wanted to go on a hunt, to keep going. Now Dean is focused on revenge, a probably vain attempt, but something he can pretend he can control, and Sam again wants to get the both of them out doing something concrete.

And my thoughts went back to the end of the SPN con episode in season 5, where Dean was also despairing about stopping the Apocalypse and Demian tells him how awesome it is, that Dean saves people and has a brother who'd die for him, and Dean wraps his head around that idea for a moment...now another outsider tells him to suck it up and be a professional, so Dean tries that out, in those heartbreaking final seconds...

However, I take issue with him giving Krissy the credit for 'saving him'--Dean was about to stab the blonde when Krissy ran in and got grabbed. Yes, she had a knife and a sort-of plan, but Dean had it under control and then she blew it apart and seriously endangered everyone. If Dean had known her plan it would have been different and they could have worked as a team, but that, of course, would have defeated his determination to keep her out of it. So I get why it was written that way...but it still bugged me :)

And I have to tell you, when they did the 'one week--two week' bit at the start, I immediately thought of you being happy to have a definite time reference :)

Yeah, I think that's why the trick didn't work - as soon as I saw the boys in the cabin in the dim light, I knew Bobby was gone. Mind you, we didn't see them salt and burn him....dun dun dun....

I agree completely with this and your other points. Dean had it well in hand. Krissy endangered him before she saved him, which means the saving doesn't really count - but whatever. I would have liked a bit more chemistry-type-stuff between Dean and Krissy too - as I didn't think they're interactions warranted the touching goodbye. It felt a little forced to me. But you know, whatever, nitpicking.

The girl is Krissy but well, I can't remember the name of the monster, it has 'v' and 'e' and 'a' and 'l' and that's all...), and I knew she would escape even if Dean made her give her picklock.
I agree with Dean not looking that horrible, I mean, how hard could it have been to make him some bags under his eyes hu?
As for the beer, I didn't notice the sound your talking about so I just thought that, with the fact Dean drink all the time, he sometimes just forgot what he does and thus forgot he had drink his beer... will see.

According to someone else who had the ability to rewind, Dean's beer was indeed full when he first reached for it.

Of course none of this is news as we’ve seen it before, but I liked how Dean dealt with it now in his present situation and how he reacted to and spoke to Krissy.

About the beer; I thought there were something odd going on there as well, I’m not sure what. I also thought something was a little off right before Dean and Frank stepped into the trailer. I’m not sure what to make of it. I probably should do a re-watch to make sure it wasn’t just in my head, a valid possibility ;)

Well... of course Bobby sticking around was my first idea as well. It might even fit, because while Dean was nearly talked out of it, HE had Tessa as his reaper. And Bobby had that creepy ass who wasn't trying to persuade.

I don't know, though, how Bobby would be able to get the liquid out of the bottle that is in Dean's hand at the time without him noticing. A straw? But even that's a little far-fetched. So... I think, as much as I want Bobby to be a little bit among them, there is another explanation. Pixies?

Yeah, also: there is a difference in forgiving and forgetting. I mean, Dean probably still is a bit sad and he surely remembers how he felt that time. Wasn't it Dark Sid of the Moon where it was mentioned? If so, that was imo more a reason that it appeared that Sam seemed to connect his happy memories with Dean's bad ones.
So not the fact that Sam went and got out had him bothered, but that he apparently didn't think about what he left behind - not even later - and that his good times aren't even in the slightest bit tainted by leaving his family.

Then again, it was a pretty faked environment, so I think it can't count. It was MEANT to make Dean feel like he did, so... accomplished.
Also, I think, Dean has been proud of Sam always. Envious, angry, proud, sad... all mixed together and what comes up is based on what he is experiencing just that moment.

He knew someone - his Mom! And she died even though she retired. There also is that hunter in the psychiatry ward... But that really wouldn't have gotten him to where he wanted Father of Girl to be - so he lied. ;-)

I liked the episode. Not amazing or mindblowing or really tearful, but still a solid story, a lot of strings coming together, weird stuff that needs explaining (later I guess?) happening and Dean and Sam.

I don't know - Bobby has had 4 weeks to practice being a ghost. Odd that he's skipping moving objects and going right to other stuff...if it IS Bobby, of course. But we don't really KNOW what ghosts have the power to do if they put their minds to it.

Why not make him look a bit horrible if they want him to? Is there something on his contract that forbids it (exception: Samifer beating him to smithereens)?

Haha, I highly doubt it. Jensen does not seem like the type to care what he looks like (on film) and they did SUCH a good job of it back in S1's Faith.

As long as the show doesn't forget that he IS faking...

And I also want the show to realize that chances Sam is actually coping (and can continue to cope) are extremely slim...I really don't want to be one of those people who complains about not having enough of one brother, but I do sort of want to see Sam's emotional life at this point. Now that we've seen Dean's...mind you, this is what happened after John's death too. Dean fell to pieces, and Sam just - rededicated himself to being a hunter.

Well, technically his mum practically signed her death warrant before she retired - but I get what you mean. It makes sense that Dean just wanted to win the argument - and statistically speaking, if he were going to answer either yes or no, no is more truthful.

Yes, definitely! I'm not saying I only want Dean's faking to be shown, but I also wanna know how Sam copes. It wasn't meant to be exclusively, if that's what came across.

So yeah, you're right about the parallels to Everybody loves a clown, especially in the coping-mechanisms. I wonder if maybe, when we have Dean faking along, we might get more of Sam's inner problems? Because now, if Sam believes the fake, he might dare loosen up a little, hoping that Dean might be able to help along? Or maybe it's that Sam,while tying to figure out how Dean is REALLY doing he'll accidentally hint something? Just thinking along...

I know Kripke admitted that back in S2, he actually sort of forgot to explore Sam's grief at all...I'm really hoping that the writers don't do the same thing now. I mean, I know Jensen can kill us with sadness, but I'm sure given the opportunity, Jared could too! :P

He can be furious too, if he wants to - he did such a good job when he was pissed at John - ah, love that scene.. brilliant angry-son!

While I liked the episode (and wondered about the beer myself), as soon as the coordinates were figured out my thought was "Why do they always pick on Wisconsin?" Maybe the better question is "How close is it to my house?"

Well, as the keen eyed observers at the SuperWiki discovered, it's not actually those coordinates! The coordinates Frank uses are 454893, whereas Bobby wrote 454895! So, yeah...maybe it IS close to your house! ;)
