[livejournal.com profile] borgmama1of5 gave me this sweet idea for a bar graph!

Behold CLOTHING BY SEASON OF ORIGIN!!

But what does it mean?!?!

First off, it means that Sam mostly wears his newer clothes, while Dean mostly wears his older clothes. Secondly, it means...umm...okay, I have no idea. I'm sure if we all think about it, we can come up with cool meanings.

I will add them to their respective season entries in If Clothes Could Talk. :)

Let me know if anyone has any other cool ideas for graphs...

It means Jared still fits in his season one clothes, despite having increased in size by 200%. Obviously. :)

Well, in some respects, Sam's wardrobe change over the years has a practical basis: he's bulked out (and possibly grown another inch) since S1. But it probably does point to a difference in attitude toward clothes that stems at least from the Stanford years. Notice that the total number of items we see Dean wear through these seasons is fairly constant (29, 25, 27, 27, 29) and that the new numbers are always smallest prior to S6. That suggests that left to his own devices, Dean mainly buys new clothes to replace ones that have worn out or are irreparably damaged/stained. Since he's on a limited budget, that makes perfect sense. Sam's totals are fairly constant, too (39, 37, 38, 42, 43), but given the comparatively few items that carry over for more than one season, my guess is that he's more apt than Dean to replace a piece of clothing just because he's tired of it.

Interesting, though, to note how many of S3's clothes for both guys evidently went into storage for S4 and eventually made reappearances in later seasons! Also interesting to note the sudden jump in new clothes for Dean in S6; one item, I know, is the duster, but Lisa must have insisted on taking him shopping.
(And it means you are awesome for doing these writeups, along with the timeline! It's an amazing resource. :) )

I agree with everything!

Actually, I didn't include the Duster in this count - technically it's a costume, and it's too odd to wear in the present day (Sam's white western shirt gets a pass, because it COULD still be worn in public without attracting attention.)

But you are quite right about Dean not buying clothes when left to his own devices.

(And it means you are awesome for doing these writeups, along with the timeline! It's an amazing resource. :) )

Why thank you! :) I appreciate the appreciation.

Well, in certain areas, the duster wouldn't look too out of place in the present day. I know ranchers who wear dusters as rain gear. But I do see what you mean.

And you're very welcome! :)

Also: Sam's clothes-buying and -wearing habits appear to be more appetitive than anything. Granted, RoboSam would have had to buy all new clothes anyway before reuniting with Dean, but there's not that much difference between the number of new items we see in S6 and the numbers in the earlier seasons, whereas certain other behaviors (like choice of food and--ahem--extracurricular activities) change significantly when Sam's soul is absent.

Another good observation! We don't know where Dean kept Sam's old clothes during that year - my theory is that at least SOME of them were at Bobby's, though, that being said, Sam did show up in 6x01 wearing all new clothes.

I am delighted to have inspired you--and boy, you put this up fast!

Conclusion 1: Sam is a clothes-horse :)
Conclusion 2: How on earth is it possible any season one shirt fit Jared in season 5??? (On the other hand, there is the Dean shirt featured in 'Afterschool Special' season 4 that teenage Dean wore that showed up on adult Dean later...I guess the ability to increase size is part of the Winchesters' magical ability to get out blood and repair holes in their clothes.)

Actually, it's my headcanon that Dean didn't really change all that much physically between high school and his 20s. Sure he bulked out a bit but honestly, he's still generally a large. My brother and I are both in our 20s and we both can fit in select high school stuff.

But I'm with you on S1 shirts still fitting JP..... O.O

Plus, if John was anything like my Dad, he would have bought them shirts that were bigger than they were under the impression that they would "grow into it" - I still have a rain jacket that is too big for me. :P

HEE! I'd buy that. Especially with flannel shirts since that's all Dean ever wears and it makes so much sense to try to make it last as long as possible. I also hear you on the rain jacket that's too big... I have a nylon jacket that I've been wearing since I was 15 (so about 11-12 years now) and it's still a bit too big...

Agreed on all counts, and ditto on the jackets. My letter jacket (earned for academics!) is a size too big because the coach who was fitting us noted that there might be a time when I would need to wear it over lots of layers. Fast forward about six years to a freak snowstorm that hit while I was at college and my parka was sitting in my closet at home... I was very glad I took his advice!

Very good point. I did once wear that rain-jacket over every article of clothing that I had packed for a trip to Berlin at New Years (it was much colder than anticipated.)

I have all the information in easy to count format on my computer ;)

Dean is still wearing that After School Special shirt in S7 too. That is a LONG-LIVED shirt!! (especially considering he was shot while wearing it in S3 - magic ability to mend clothes strikes again!)

I love your clothing records. It's fascinating! Don't they say "Clothes make the man?"

What I observed, as the seasons evolved, is that Sam's tastes in clothing became more Dean-like, which makes sense from a practicality POV. Except for that faded, red-patterned inside-out shirt...that remains solely Sam and still a little wierd but I dig it.

And yeah, I've got NO idea how JP fits anything from Season Early these days. Shoulders...mmm...

I figure that those shirts were just really big on him in S1 :P

To me, Sam's shirts always stay "Sam" by being plaid or striped. Dean rarely wears plaid - it makes him look too cuddly. ;)

But, Sam does lose the hoodies. And in S6 especially, Sam starts wearing more "Dean-like" clothes - hence, Dean saying in 6x06 (I think) that Sam is just acting like Dean does.

Dean does rarely wear plaid.... but when he does... Oy. Come to mama. He totally does look all little-boy and cuddly in plaid flannel.

It means that Sam is harder on clothing than Dean?

Or maybe that Dean hates shopping, so he'll wear things as long as possible before giving in and getting something new.

They both must be pretty hard on jeans though!

I'm amazed at how much work you do on these, and how fun they are to interpret!

Thanks! And yes - one of the many reasons I don't bother keeping track of jeans :P
