Quick Reaction: 7x07 The Mentalists

Hello! Here I am home again, mildly intoxicated and a little bit chilly.

So, this is the episode that I saw being filmed, though, they did cut a lot of what I saw - still, FUN TIMES! All the fun stories from my evening of watching them film are in this post, but I'll point out what scenes they were in the review.

Here we go....

We enter with your typical over-the-top seance. I wonder, sometimes, what Pamela's business was like...but that's off topic. I love how the "medium" starts freaking out at the real ghost stuff, and the customers think it's normal.

Dean steals a classic car - as well he should. I like his "have a little pride" when he sees the owner has made a mess of it with take-out wrappers. And the radio tells him about the deaths of two psychics, and off he goes!

And yes, I realize this quick reaction is mostly a recap, but bare with me...

Dean telling a joke and then looking up only to discover that Sam isn't there to roll his eyes - so sad. Dean misses his brudda.

And then Dean goes to that hippie cafe that's all locally sources organic, and me and my friend laughed "It's Vancouver!" Hahahah (seriously, this town is run by hippies - not that that's a bad thing). I love the fact that Sam was already sitting in the cafe.

I also love the way Dean doesn't actually let Sam get a word in - because he knows Sam's going to tell him to go away...so even though he's obnoxious about it, I find it kind of endearing in a "oh, you poor idiot" sort of way. Also, Sam seems to get angry like me - where I just quietly steam until I erupt into violence...well, except Sam doesn't really get all that violent. He just has the steaming part down.

Anyway, I think it's cute the way everyone in the episode can pick up on the fact that Sam is pissed off - whether they were psychic or not.

A LOT of this episode was shot in my neighbourhood. The black girl's house and the Lamaze class are on 6th. The mural behind Sam at the end of the episode is a block away at 5th and Commercial (it's not on google-streetview, because it was just painted last spring.) I'm willing to bet that the "mentalist" girl was also somewhere in the neighbourhood. The "pawnshop" was down on Clark. (And now you know what neighbourhood I live in, please do not stalk me.)

I liked how the non-psychic girl was completely honest about the fact that she wasn't actually psychic. 

Anyway, yeah...damn, for the life of me, I can't really remember the order of events anymore, and it's kind of hard to talk about this episode, because I knew it was the pawnshop guy the whole time because I saw them filming. Other than that, it was clear when they went to go salt the bones so early, and the ghost gave that final warning, that they were salting the wrong sister's bones.

OH! That's what I'm forgetting - them going to the museum of oddities! 

I liked the hallway of sibling-acts. The "Campbell Brothers" thing was a LITTLE too fanservicey for my tastes...but it was a sweet shout-out to that part of the fandom, and cute. 

Also, the line about how "some people are meant to take care of others" was an interesting one...I wonder if they are going to develop that, or if it just is what it is.

The message from Ellen was totally unexpected, AND AWESOME. At first, when the dude said "Do you know an Eleanor..." I thought "Dr. Visyak!?!?!!" and then he said "Elle, or Ellen?" and I was like "No...it can't be..." but then when he said "...or I will kick your ass from beyond." I was like "ELLEN! I LOVE YOU! COME BACK TO US!" 

And I LOVE that Ellen is looking after Dean from beyond the grave. That is both adorable and heartwrenching when you think of it. I also liked her message - that he had to tell someone how bad it was. It's what he was nagging Sam about in the very first episode this season - "Really? I have to hear it from Death!?" (one of my favourite lines)...and yet, he's doing it himself...because he's supposed to be the older stoic-brother who has his shit together.  I also liked the fact that SOMEBODY brought up the fact that Dean was betrayed by his best friend, and that MIGHT just have an effect on a person. (I know Bobby brought up the fact that his best friend had DIED, but technically the betrayal beforehand was probably the worst part. And before you start defending Cas, go back and read my rewatch posts - Cas DID betray Dean, at the very least, by hurting Sam.)

Also, I like how Sam totally goes "Indian Jones" on the pawnshop guy, and just shoots him dead.

On another note, I love the fact that Supernatural can have lines like "You lied to me and you killed my friend!" and we all know that the real problem is the "you lied to me" part! Hahahaha...Sam and Dean are such weird heroes. We find out though, that just as a lot of people suspected, Dean ISN'T sorry about the "killing Amy part," but rather the "lying to Sam part."

And Sam actually agrees with him! I know this will anger a lot of people - but, I'm not angry. It makes sense in a Winchester-twisted way. I know a lot of people have pointed out that they let Lucky go - but we don't actually know that. Lucky may have just gotten away. And a lot of people have pointed out that they've let witches go - but they've NEVER been a match for powerful witches. They've always either needed outside help (Ruby), or only managed to kill them because they wanted to be killed (Samhain dude). And you could accuse me of hand-waving, to me it just makes the Winchesters more realistic. I mean, I don't approve of adultery, but I've totally been the "other woman" before - sometimes we just do things against our morals because it's "just this once." I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it's human.

Anyway, I do like that at the end of the episode, Dean follows Ellen's advice. (Dean has ALWAYS been afraid of Ellen, that's not going to change once she's dead.)...and he lets Sam know that he's having trouble trusting people, and that his drinking and not-sleeping was mainly due to lying to Sam (I think it's more than that, it's been building for years...but lying is definitely what escalated it recently.) In any case, hopefully he can continue to be more open and eventually get a little better?

Ok, so, the scenes I saw being filmed were:

Jensen and Jared scenes (these I watched from down the road, and could hardly see anything):
1. Sam and Dean arriving at the black girl's house and the girl running into Dean's arms from the staircase. They only did about two takes of this.

Jared scenes (these I watched from right behind the camera, next to Jim Michaels and Serge's driver (who shares a hometown with my dad):
2. Sam arriving and busting into the Lamaze class.
-They shot all aspects of this scene - Sam arriving in the car, getting out, running up to the door, and kicking in the door. You don't see it in the episode, you only see Sam arrive. This was the scene where Jared couldn't actually open the car door, because he had broken it the day before (then they fixed it, then he broke it again). So, for one take, he pushed himself through the open window of the car to be funny. Instead of him pulling up and getting out, they filmed him pulling up - then he got out the passenger side, walked around to the driver's side - and then they filmed him pretending he had just gotten out of the drivers side. Then he runs up a stair case and kicks in a door all dramatic like.

3. Sam coming out of the Lamaze class and phoning Dean. 
-The actually just kept the camera rolling. Jared ran up the stairs, kicked in the door, and disappeared inside. Then waited about five seconds (the first time he stuck his head out the door and said "Ready?" - it was cute) and then came out and did the phone call scene. I don't know what the dialogue ended up being in the episode, but what they filmed were a couple of takes of variations of "Dean, it's the pawnshop guy! He frickin' goose-chased me to some pregnant yoga class! *pause* Okay *hang-up*. Jared did about 3 or 4 takes of the phone call.

4. After Jared left, the crew filmed a "Sam's-feet-view" of running up the staircase and kicking in the door as well.

So, the main spoilers that I couldn't tell you back in September were:
1. The episode was all about psychics.
2. It was the pawnshop guy.
3. Sam busts in on a Lamaze glass.
4. Sam and Dean were NOT driving the Impala.

So, all in all, I think I stood out in the sprinkling-rain for about 2 hours and only about 30 seconds of it made it into the episode - so, there's an insight into the filming process for you! NOT THAT I'M COMPLAINING! Because it was super awesome - and Jared launching himself out that car window all ungraceful-like was HILARIOUS. Including when the gun tucked into the back of his pants fell out and hit the pavement and everyone cringed.

Anyway, I think that's it for this week....again, a slightly shorter quick reaction...I'm either forgetting something, or it's because the "meat" of this episode was the brother-relationship, and that's been put on the track to being mended without being overly dramatic...at leat this episode.

I did like Sam cramming his stuff in the trunk, and that's how he's letting Dean know that he's coming back. Also, (I checked twitter and had it confirmed by other fans thinking the same thing) that was totally Cas' trench-coat in the trunk as well. 

Though, on Sam's forgiveness note - I also love how you know Sam is starting to forgive Dean (and still totally loves him), because he totally smiles and tries to hide it when Dean threatens the waiter at the hippie cafe to not "affirm" him. Such a cute understated moment.

I also liked the dude's affirmation at the beginning of the episode: "You are a virile manifestation of the divine." Yup, that pretty much sums Dean up.

The last line of the episode was a little bit cheesy and maybe supposed to be funny, but wasn't? I don't know...they could have ended a little stronger. Ok, so apparently the last line was a Chinatown reference! (that I obviously didn't get.) But, they were pulling off of 5th onto Commercial, so I didn't really care. (I walk by there every time I go anywhere by skytrain!)

Ok...so, NOW that's it for this week? Yes, I think that's it...


Next week: SHENANIGANS! (Seriously, I don't know what the heck was up with that "next time" - I think I'll continue to avoid spoilers.

That last line--and I know this only from my screenwriting class--is a takeoff on the last line of Chinatown, starring "my man Jack": "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." I actually laughed.
Y'know, it occurred to me in pondering Sam's attitude in this ep that not only is walking away and staying angry for a while Sam's MO, it's also a very John thing to do, given what we learned in "Dark Side of the Moon." And in terms of temper and temperament, Sam's a lot more like John than Dean is.
But yeah, the meat of the episode really was getting the brothers back together, and that's the only reason I watched it. Definitely liked the message from Ellen, though, and the fact that Dean actually took it somewhat to heart. Maybe getting Sam back and not losing him right away when he opened up a little *will* help him ease up and open up more, and I'm kind of hopeful that Melanie's reaction to Dean's refusing to accept thanks because he couldn't save the other girl will help, too.

Yes, Sam REALLY is like John in temperament. It makes sense - my sister who is most like my mum is the one that always butted heads with my mum the most.

Haha, did you notice how I forgot EVERYONE'S name except for Sam and Dean :P It was ridiculously hard to type this up when I couldn't remember the girl's name... but yes! I'm hoping that now that Dean has started mending fences with Sam, maybe he can start fixing the other things that are wrong too...and that includes feeling so guilty for those he doesn't save, that he can't feel good about those he does.

I caught Sam's little smile, too near the end. I figured the turning point for him was that he had to kill the pawn shop guy. He had to kill like Dean had to kill Amy.

The message from Ellen was excellent! I too, love the idea that she's watching over the boys. Glad that Dean acted on her advice.

As for the whole Amy thing (and boy am I glad we're through with that!) the fact is, both boys were wrong. Sam was wrong in not killing Amy in the first place and Dean was wrong to keep the truth about killing her from Sam for so long. They're both to blame.

Well, this is Dean we're talking about here, but I hope he can learn to trust again. He didn't take a drink the whole episode, so that's a good sign. :)

Also, no motel room at all in this eppy. That's pretty rare and maybe even a first unless they were staying at Bobby's or an abandoned house.

Oh yeah! Geez, good catch. I guess because they were staying different places, so...it'd just be them all alone. Crazy though, I guess the art department finally got a break on thinking up another motel-room set. :P

Did you notice the green house is the same one they used back in S3's Xmas eppy for the house of the first victim? And the stadium scene w/Dean was the same location from last season after Sam breaks his hell wall a little the first time and then wakes up. They go have coffee right by that same stadium. Oh, and then there's the Johnny Mac's Ribshack bag that Dean's carrying before he steals the car. Same joint the boys ran into Crowley at from last season. ;)

I didn't catch the trenchcoat in the trunk...interesting! Overall, I liked this ep. I thought the ending lacked a little oomph, but it's always pleeeeasing for me to see the boys bantering in any fashion. It's why I started watching the show! That, and they had the guts to burn a woman on a ceiling, and slice open her belly. Banter and blood. "These are a few of my favorite things..." *sings badly*

Yes, that's what I thought of the ending too - but overall, the episode was good. And YES to bantering, the brotherly dynamic is what sold the show for me too. :)

Oh, I really liked this episode. I was afraid they'd get too "been there-done that" with the whole getting them together-plot, so I liked how that played out.

I was seriously happy to see Sam's bitch-face. Familiar face and all that, also, after all the not-caring that has been going on before, it's refreshing to see him be SAM again. Pissed and angry and hurting.

I think, like you, that Sam is more angry about the betrayal then by the actual killing. Sure, he liked Amy. She was his friend BUT ... when you think about it? He knew her for ONE evening and ONE conversation later.
And he didn't even want to hear a reason from Dean for killing her - there could have been a valid one, right? But he didn't want one, he just heard that she was dead and he was pissed because Dean didn't trust him.

And honestly, that is a valid reason to be pissed.

But it's still telling that he wasn't that concerned with Amy (or her son, for that matter... he didn't ask if Dean let the kid live. Either he knew Dean wouldn't kill him... or what? Doesn't care? Probably just forgot about him, which is one more sign that he's not so much angry about the death but about the lies)

I loved how the only other real psychic (apart from Bad Pawnshop-guy) didn't flaunt his talent but was a guide (owner?) of the museum. And I sure loved Ellen's comment.
I think, though, if she used the term "how bad it really was (or is?)", that tiny little remark Dean made about his problems is only a very small piece of more to come.

So... *rubs hands in anticipation*

Personally, I didn't mind the Campbell-thing. I think it was cute, and not too much fandom-waving. I thought it rather nice, because IF they were their relatives (which isn't certain), it'd be an interesting fact in THAT family. You know, not only was there a gay relative (I'm assuming that wouldn't have gone down well in that time, and I don't know if I'd think of the Campbells as very progressive? But that might be unfair towards them), but there was a PSYCHIC Campbell.

Yes! Sam's smile!!! The moment he sat with Dean in that hippie-cafe (I loved the waiter :-D ), I knew he was back. He was relaxed again. Talk about body-language: he was visibly open towards Dean. And that smile sold the deal, not to mention the nice gesture of leaving Dean with the girl.

In short, I really liked this episode. Nothing much happened, I knew who was the bad guy pretty soon (it's just... something about the quality of the actors, maybe? Though a demon-worshipping lamaze-teacher would have been awesome!) and I also knew the sister was the good ghost of the two of them, even before she asked them to listen (why didn't they LISTEN? *shakes head at Winchesters*)

Still, it was funny, cute, Dean smiled again and was called "a virile manifestation of the divine" - hee.

Good ep, not oscar-worthy but good entertainment :-)

I agree. I think, as Sam said, he KNEW he was too close to her to make a valid decision - that it was a very grey area (always had been). I'm also the same way about lies - I've told my friends numerous times that I can forgive them just about anything, as long as they are honest with me about it. As soon as they lie, that's when I start having a hard time forgiving.

Yes, it IS interesting. I guess I just hang out in fandom too much. And I agree, I highly doubt the Campbells of the 1800s would be that progressive...just judging by the attitudes of the time, especially if it were the late 1800s. Psychics are interesting in the Supernatural universe, because they seem to walk this weird line where Hunters don't kill them, work with them, sometimes love them, but yet Dean still uses psychic as an almost insult towards Sam, and anything psychic ability in Sam freaks Dean out.

I think even Jensen said at a ComicCon panel that you could probably do a whole episode where Sam and Dean didn't speak, and they'd still know how to get the story across. (Not that he was tooting his own horn, he was agreeing with an audience member who asked a question about body-language.)

Loved your recap/reactions and extra insight into the filming of this eppy. I really liked the Melanie character and it was nice to see Dean bond with a woman again that's not necessarily a conquest. We haven't seen that in awhile. I think that kind of surprised Sam when she went running into Dean's arms and Dean was all concerned for her after her friend was killed. With that scene I kept wishing to myself, oh man, I wish I was Melanie at that moment. To run into Dean's arms and have him hold me all protective like that. **head thunk**

I was also pleased with how they got the brothers back together again. The fact though, that they were apart for a week and a half just hurts. Neither brother called the other. I'm glad Dean didn't cave and call, but Sam....you shoulda called your brother. It will be interesting to see if they give us any backstory later as to what happened to either of them for that 10 or so days. I absolutely loved that it took the threat of an ass-kicking from Ellen beyond the grave to spur Dean to action and tell his brother what's what. And Cas' coat in the trunk, nice touch, kinda like the Wendigo mask we saw early S6. I barely missed seeing the coat. It would have been nice if they showed it a teeny bit longer. Or even mentioned it was there.

Overall it was a pleasant episode. Not up to the caliber that has been S7 so far, but it was good. Aren't the writers of this episode the two new ones this year? I don't think they have the whole Supernatural tone down yet.

I was thrilled when they mentioned the week and a half - because I get thrilled any time they mention how much time has passed between episodes! Hahaha, but yeah, I DO wonder what they were doing.

I don't think Sam should have called Dean. He needed his space to be angry, and I think, also, it was Sam's way of punishing Dean...Sam knows that what Dean hates most is being alone and not knowing where Sam is or if he's okay. It's a little cruel, but that's what all punishments are.

Yes, they are. I thought they did pretty good on the tone, though. I think they need a bit more work on their misdirection and tension. But I REALLY like the fact that the brotherly stuff was all very understated and, I think, realistic. It's easy to go for melodramatic, and they didn't, so I really respect that.

Sam does need his space to be angry and he does know that Dean hates being alone - it's Sam's way of emotionally manipulating Dean, and that irritates me a little. Both brothers know how to manipulate the other, but Sam is a master of doing it to Dean. It is cruel, and while Dean should not have lied to Sam, and he has a right to be angry, he is still being very much a child in this respect and I thought Sam had grown out of that some.

I couldn't be an actress either, but I still would love to run into Dean's arms and have him be all protective over me, just 'cuz, you know. (I could really use some man protective arms right now. So, just a tiny bit envious here. Love that scene. Had to watch it a couple times after the eppy aired and I got my download.)

The writers did get the understated brotherly stuff. I liked the comment from the museum owner about it not being a bad thing to take care of someone all their life. Nice shout-out to Dean being Sam's caretaker. So, yea, I liked the subtlety in a lot of the relationship stuff. That was good.

See, I disagree. I think it's well within his right to dole out a little punishment. MIND YOU, Sam didn't realize that Dean's increased downward spiral was him punishing himself already - I think if he had put two and two together before, he wouldn't have punished Dean further. But hey, maybe I'm just cruel too.

They did a pretty good job of dressing up the area. I barely recognized any of it (aside from the mural. That's a giveaway). And my bus goes by that pawnshop so I recognized that. But yeah, I agree with the hippie thing. They really 'embodied' the spirit of The Drive in this one, didn't they LOL.

another thing I thought was interesting was Dean's relationship with the girl (I can't for the life of me remember her name). They were a little bit flirty, as per typical Dean MO, but Dean doesn't really go there, as he hasn't really been able to since Lisa (but he tries, hence his hysterical pep talk to himself in 7.04). If this episode was placed in seasons 1 to 3 (or debateably 4), he totally would have slept with her (which always kind of annoys me, as I want to yell out at the girl 'Didn't something horrible just happen to you?! Aren't you traumatized? Is this really the time for a hookup?!') Anywho, it's interesting to see where Dean's boundaries are now and how he interacts with hot ladies.

Haha, yeah, I never really understood the girls who could get all sexy just after their friends were killed horribly or whatever... :P

And yes, I did notice that although they were flirty, it was the kind of flirty where it was sort of...platonic and affectionate, rather than "I'm going to jump your bones." I guess Dean hasn't slept with anyone since he left Lisa.

Of the cafe? No I really don't know where that is... but it's a very open and reverberational place. There was a bit of an echo on their dialogue (and in the lady's house too! Most businesses on the drive are in relatively small building spaces. But who knows...

The restaurant that Dean went into is Cafe Deux Soleil on Commercial (near fifth). The interior was someplace else though. But at the end, they WERE actually parked just around the corner from Cafe Deux Soleil, so I thought that was cool.

I just need to get rid of my trivia-findings, because it made me all MAD that I knew the reluctant husband in the first scene (the one who wanted money). I was nearly certain it was BJ (Or, well, Mike Farrell...) but it wasn't :-( Though the resemblance is striking, I have to say.

Anyway, just in case anyone is interested, or if not, I just needed a place to tell that my mad detective-skillz made me find out that it's actually an actor from Star Gate (series)... and yeah... well. Wouldn't have recognized him from THERE...

Oh, WALTER! I knew I recognized him from somewhere. :D Your linking that actor with Mike Farrell is funny, though, because both Gary Jones and his SG-1 character remind me a LOT of Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff).

Really? Radar? Ok, with the glasses, I could see it, and in character of Walter, probably. But physically, I had to actually have both Mike Farrell and the Reluctant Husband open in a window and they look SO alike. Ok, I'm talking about oldMikeFarrell, of course. BJ Hunnycut looked a lot different (and was taller)

But I've never been too far into SG-1, so I couldn't place him THERE. Love, though, that we find all these familiar faces in SPN ;-)
