Quick Reaction: 7x02 Hello Cruel World

I watched the east coast feed tonight, so this is coming to you early!

Oh man....

So, we start where left off, and the Leviathan is about to kill Dean and Bobby, only he starts melting black ooze - and apparently Cas' angel grace must have been the only thing holding that vessel together, because the Leviathan shuffles off and dies...

But before we get to that, let's return to Sam, who is being straggled by a hallucination of Lucifer. And they aren't even trying to be subtle about the sexual-assault theme anymore. As some of you know, last week I got a bit ticked off after the episode because people were making jokes about that spooning line - and to me that line was horrible, because I knew what it was referring to. Hallucination!Lucifer lays it all out on the table at the beginning of this episode though, so I sure as hell hope I don't see any jokes about it, because personally, I don't think rape is something you should laugh at...this whole scene is completely horrifying, especially since we know for a fact that what Hallucination!Lucifer is talking about it's a threat, or a joke, it's real, it's already happened.

Sam snaps out of it when Dean and Bobby find him, and they run after the Leviathan, only to see him disappear into the municipal water supply. So - before I get back to the crushing emotional moment...let's talk about a glaring plot-hole! How in the hell does something happening to a municipality in Kansas affect Sioux Falls, South Dakota? What happened to Nebraska? I mean, that little girl supposedly drinks the water in Kansas, yet when she decides to attack a hospital, she travels across another state and goes to Sioux Falls general?

Ok, um, criticism over.

Back to horrible reality of Cas being dead. Vessel gone...if Cas WAS in Jimmy still, then Jimmy's body is currently trenchcoat-less at the bottom of a lake (probably Deer Lake in Burnaby, but that's neither here nor there.) In our kind-of-actually-hilarious-even-though-it's-sad  moment of the evening, Dean fishes Cas's suddenly clean trenchcoat out of the water and the crushing reality of his friend being gone crashes in...and yeah, Dean is sad.

I did like the fact that the Leviathan went into the water though - because Leviathans are often sea-monsters in stories, aren't they? I think that's cool tie-in to real stories.

So, back to Bobby's!

Sam is pretty when he is sleeping /creepy-stalker

Wow, the cut on Sam's hand is pretty goddamn bad. I like Dean and Bobby both taking care of Sam - I'm a sucker for h/c after all. I like Dean's version of breakfast in bed - a bottle of water and a protein bar. "Don't get used to it." Ah, Winchesters, I ♥ you.

Meanwhile, Lucifer is taunting Sam from the corner of the room. Sam is honest this time to Dean though, and on the verge of tears, and it makes me want to cry, because that has got to be SO terrifying. And the whole exchange of Dean trying to tell Sam that Lucifer isn't real, and then Sam saying "that's what he says about you" - ow, my heart.

In the meantime, black inky water is infecting little girls, and demolition crew-members, and the swim team. And the Leviathans have to learn how earth and humans work, because they don't KNOW, they've been in Purgatory since before humans evolved, I guess. Anyway...apparently little-girl-leviathan does not have a very good grasp of sarcasm, because she actually thinks that surgeons can cut people up whenever they want. Damn you Dr. Sexy! Hahaha

Sorry if I'm jumping around the episode here, but you know, I'm doing this from memory, even though I have the episode on my friend's PVR and I could just watch it again - but tradition is tradition, and these posts I do from memory. 

Dean needs to go to Kansas to check out the swim team incident. Ok, wait, so so far we have 4 Leviathans and 1 "boss" somewhere....so 5?

Oh wait|! I forgot to talk about Dean and Bobby's conversation. I love Bobby for knowing to watch out for Dean. A lot of people would be distracted by Sam's problems, but I love Bobby for asking Dean how HE is, and pointing out that he just lost one of the best friend's he's ever had....

True to Dean fashion though, he has locked everything in a "steel box" and he is FINE! Sam, meanwhile, is obsessively cleaning his guns...so that's...not reassuring either.

So, right, Dean takes off to check out the swim-team, and Bobby stays to look after Sam. 

Meanwhile, it's Sheriff Mills! Jodie Mills! I love Sheriff Mills. 

Uh, where was I? Oh yeah, Sheriff Mills has had an appendectomy...and her roommate is annoying...but then the little girl takes over the doctor (again, in Sioux Falls? Really?) and the doctor EATS HER ANNOYING ROOMMATE. And it's gross! And Sheriff Mills passes out! And then comes to, and they give her something to sleep - and Leviathan!Doctor is creepy.

Meanwhile, Hallucination!Lucifer is teasing Sam again - I like how he gives the example of a hunter going crazy as "Martin started shooting at nothing." - because that's totally a call back to Sam, Interrupted back in S5, when we first met Martin the ex-Hunter now psychiatric-patient! Yay! But, um, boo - because it's sad that he's crazy and that Sam is crazy.

(And for those who suffer from mental illness, I apologize for my continued use of the word "crazy" it's just really convenient. And hey, mental illness runs in my family, and I don't have a problem with the word crazy - though, I'm a soulless bastard at times, so that probably isn't saying much.)

Anyway, Bobby comes in and calms Sam down - all the while Hallucination!Lucifer is stabbing him through the torso with a fire-poker. You know, it must have been interesting to act on the set with Mark P. in these scenes - because Dean and Bobby can't react to him at all or acknowledge that he's there - the only one who can is Jared.

Then Jodie Mills calls Bobby! And sadly, he doesn't recognize her right away...there goes my fantasy of him and Sheriff Mills living happily ever after hunting monsters and raising two 30-something surrogate sons...

So, Bobby has to go rescue Sheriff Mills, and Sam is FINE on his own, he is....and look, there's Dean home! (Ok, I was spoiled for the fact that Sam was going to be tricked into going someplace, because I watched the preview scene this week - I know, my will power for spoilers is horrible.) So, I knew this wasn't the real Dean...and I would have known it anyway (I'd like to think), because Hallucination!Dean is MEAN. He tells Sam that they should take him to a psych hospital and that Sam isn't going to get better and...general mean stuff.

And Bobby runs into the Doctor!Leviathan at the hospital and he shoots him with silver but it has no effect - and DUDE THE MOUTH THING IS FRIGHTENING.

Then the real Dean comes home, and Sam isn't around...and thank goodness Dean put the GPS back on Sam's phone. 

Sam starts doing just what his subconscious is afraid of - he starts shooting at nothing in an a warehouse...and then the real Dean comes in...and man, I love the way he handles Sam. "We gotta start small" and "This discussion does not require a weapons discharge!" Especially that last line, it's so...military, and John-like. 

And then the fact that Dean has been to hell to comes in handy, because Dean knows the difference between hell and earth, and it's the quality of pain...and that...rather sad...but hey, useful! So, he grabs Sam's bandaged hand and hurts Sam to get Sam back to reality. And it works! And Sam just keeps pressing into that wound until Lucifer flickers away....

...and is it just me, or was Sam's wound oozing black? Because...um...that's a bit worrying.

It works though, and Sam gets a call from Bobby, who wants them to meet him back at the house, because the Leviathan is after him. So off they go!

Only BOBBY'S HOUSE IS BURNED DOWN!! HOLY SHIT! I mean, I expected it, because Jensen accidentally spoiled at the Con, because he underestimated my intelligence...but geez, I didn't expect it so...sudden. They couldn't even rescue anything...ALL THOSE BOOKS! The weapons! The MEMORIES! (the only standing set on Supernatural!)....

And they can't find Bobby! And Dean calls Bobby's direct hotline and it just goes to voice-mail...and he leaves a message about how if Bobby is dead than Dean is NOT fine, and he is "going to strap my Beautiful Mind brother into the car and drive off a pier" - and as much as that's horrible, I love the fact that he said that....I kind of like the imagery of it. It's horribly dark in a sort of nice way.

Sam doesn't find Bobby, but he does find another Leviathan...who is there to kill them. And Dean shoots it with silver again, but of course that does nothing...and the Leviathan throws him and breaks his leg! And then Sam and Dean crush him with a car, but the Leviathan hits Sam in the head...and and...I love Dean's line of "I'm the one with a broken leg, you have to carry me!" 

Oh man, sorry, I got into narrating the episode there instead of talking about it....but SO INTENSE. Dean has to call 911, but only realizes in the ambulance that that means that they will go to the HOSPITAL! And that scene in the ambulance was awesome! 

Completely sort-of-off-topic question: Are there other shows out there that have characters who are prone to seizures? I'm just wondering.

So, all that progress Sam made might be undone because he was whacked in the head - and Hallucination!Lucifer is back, and says he's not going anywhere...at least maybe Sam will know that he isn't real this time, maybe he won't have that doubt? But...geez...what if his mind tricks him again?

And where is Bobby? And what's he going to do without his books? And and...oh hey, just thought of something...would the panic room burn? Maybe Bobby is safe in the panic room? Geez...but Bobby's HOUSE. I loved Bobby's house.

I feel like I'm mourning Bobby's house more than I'm mourning Cas...and I am. I guess I don't really believe that we've seen the last of Cas...or maybe I'm just in denial. 

Also, what is Dean going to do with a broken leg? Are they going to stick with continuity and keep it broken for a while? Are they going to pull a "2 months or however-long later" and have Dean healed? Or are they going to pull a magical-healing and just have him fine in two episodes or so?

This season is kicking ass so far, by the way.

Next week is going to be extra special, because my best friend is in town for it!! I haven't seen him in over 2 years, guys...I'm super excited. It probably also means that my reaction post next week will be late.

I always love your reviews/conversations about Show. So insightful!

You'r observation about the apparent sexual abuse is spot on. I think it can mess you up worse than just about anything. I'm not sure the writers will deal with it deeply, but we know it's there. It's THERE.

I didn't follow all the plot holes, kinda turned a blind eye to them. Which was a little annoying in this ep because, man, there were a lot of them. And I wish the Leviathan were creepier, less earthly. Take a page from Cthulhu.

I'll have to go back and check Sam's oozing hand! Eeesh, I hope it's not black...and speaking of Sam's hand, I thought it was damned brilliant how Dean handled that situation in the warehouse. GO DEAN! But it makes me worry that Sam will start becoming dependent upon pain for his reality. He can get OCD at the drop of a hat. Just lookit the way he was cleaning his gun. Scary.

And I totally agree about Bobby's house. It's gone. All the books, magicky things, but mostly, all the memories. It was most home the boys ever had. And Cas will be back. I got teary over Bobby's house. Waaah.

Can it be next Friday already? No? Damn...

Yeah, sexual-assault is horrible, probably the most horrible thing I can think of really. I'm not sure if the show will bring it up again, it's such a horrible topic, but it'll be interesting to see if they do...to see if they actually deal with it on some level...they haven't in the past, just alluded to it and left it be.

Well, someone else thinks Sam's hand was just dark blood...

And SO true about Sam and his OCD! We saw a glimpse of that way back in S3...and that was when he was driven insane by Gabriel.

Oh man, Bobby's house...all my tears. We need to have a memorial or something...this is horrible

As usual I had a lot of similar thoughts. (I love your reactions!)

I'm worried about the same thing. When Dean said he broke his leg-I was like,"His leg is broke!?" How many h/c domestic fics are there where Dean breaks his leg (and often gets permanently disabled in some way and so much quit hunting-or it gets a lot harder for him)?

I'm pretty sure Bobby's house didn't burn down-it was exploded with some type of bomb. (Though I'm sure there was some fire.) The guy the Leviathan took over worked in demolitions.

About the water supply...the only thing I can think of is maybe water plants are connected to each other sometimes? They did say the monsters would go through any pipes...I also loved the Leviathan-water connection.

Now that you mention it yeah, it looked kind of black...Someone posted about why would Sam's hand be bandaged for so long since ep.1 seemed to show some passage of time. They were speculating that since Sam cut his hand on the broken jar of virgin/purgatory monster blood maybe it was effecting him somehow.

It's true about Dean's leg! It's a common injury in h/c fic, but I never thought they would do it on the show!!

Well, either way, Bobby's house is GONE. They said it was "torched" which to me means burned down - with accelerant.

Ok, water-pipes connected...but across the state of Nebraska? To just-so-happens-to-be-Sioux-Falls? I think that's stretching it a little bit...but hey, I don't really care. Supernatural is good enough character and plot-wise that I'm willing to ignore the occasional plot-hole.

Sam's hand: Yeah, I'm curious to see...I mean, the cut really was nastier than I thought it was - so I can sort of see why it might not be healed right away. I'm actually impressed he can still use it - you can really mess up your hand slicing too far into the palm.

this episode was so intense! I'm honestly getting really scared again by the stuff that happens.

It's also interesting that they changed up the format till now, because normally we would have a few days (sometimes weeks)between episodes and now its just one after the other, which for me gives it such a horrible sense of entrapment and urgency *shiver*

I know because I inferred it. Sexual-assault has been a running sub-theme through Supernatural since S1, but most people don't seem to pick up on it. I've actually been considering writing a meta on it.

I think the first three episodes are one run like this, and then they'll get back to going a couple of weeks between episodes...that's what I believe I heard somewhere anyway...I know that the first three directors had to work closely with each other.

Spot on. The episode just rocked. I was at the literal edge of my seat, biting my nails, just dying is all.

And that ending?! So scary. Yep, that's it ... remember the old UK tagline Scary Got Sexy? Well, it's like this season Sexy got freakin' Scary.

Next week is the Jensen-directed episode, correct? I can't even imagine how we get there from here. Yikes.

I'm just so conflicted. I haven't watched any of the new season- I'm kind of waiting to see how everything plays out before I jump in. This is my conflict: from the sound of it, the show is fairly strong right now and is making a lot of people happy. But the things that everyone are squeeing about are all the things that make h/c and whump uncomfortable genres for me. I have the same conflict with highly praised fic in those genres- I appreciate the quality, but I suffer through the story, because I can't help but get invested, and then I spend the whole time wincing and torturing myself with the hope it'll get better.

Oh man...that's a pickle. I don't know what to tell you. I mean, the h/c real/potential is pretty goddamn epic...but the plot is pretty interesting too, but it's just in it's infancy - it's all just set-up at this point. I'm not sure where they are going to go with it. Maybe you should wait a couple more episodes? See if it still sounds uncomfortable or if it sounds like the epic plot might be worth a little discomfort?

Because I can't really advise, since I don't have the same problem with h/c as you do. So, I guess maybe just wait and see?

And yeah Mark Pellegrino - amazing performance. So chilling, and yes it must've been a challenge for all of them acting as if he wasn't there. I remember Jensen talking about that on the commentary for In My Time Of Dying....

Someone said the Leviathans weren't scary enough and for me, I just don't care. I think the emotional shit they are dealing with is far more intriguing than the monsters right now. But that's just me. lol

It's not just you! Haha, the Leviathans are just the catalyst - I don't really care how scary they are (though, I do think they are scary enough for me). The show has always been about the emotional shit, not really the monsters - or at least, that's why *I* watch.

OK so i LOVED everything - apart from.

If Lucifer is only a hallucination, how the hell did Sam physically move to that warehouse? If he drove, there should be a car. But really, if it's a hallucination, he should be going out of his mind in Bobby's house (which ohmygod NO IT'S GONE - dear God Bobby, please say you keep some of your books in your panic room. Because that has to have survived. Because if the charges were put in the panic room, there would be NO HOUSE LEFT STANDING, CHARRED OR OTHERWISE [/unnecessary caps]) and Dean should find him at Bobby's house. How did Sam physically move?

Otherwise HOLY FUCK THAT WAS AWESOME. :D

I agree! The episode was AMAZING!

When Dean pulled up to the warehouse that Sam was in, there was a scrap-yard van out front with it's lights still on. I have a feeling that Sam drove himself there in the midst of a psychotic break in one of Bobby's vans. Seems impossible, yeah, but this is Supernatural ;)

Oh man...Bobby's HOUSE. I don't even...I can't...poor Bobby! What the heck is he going to do? Does insurance cover acts of Leviathan?

I totally agree about the black oozing from Sam's bandage: is it real or the lighting? I am going to have to rewatch this because I thought it was all over and did not make any sense. Why tie in Jody Mills with a surgical procedure at the hospital and yet Bobby is somehow aware of it even if he did not recognize her voice right way on the phone? Yes, municipal water supplies are confined so how did the Leviathans get where they did? And who exactly is the boss and how did he give orders when they were just ooze in water? Although I noticed it was pretty ominous with the girl drinking water and the lake in the background--nice touch.

Mark Pellegrino outdid himself in the creepy aspect. He's clean shaven, which honestly throws me off, and his comments and actions toward Sam are just incredible. Practicing golf swings with an iron poker to the more overt miming a gun to the head are two that come to mind. As you mentioned last week, the show did touch on Dean's own experience with Hell here and incorporated it well. Distinguishing reality and Hell existence made sense.

And Bobby's house a smoking hulk. How the heck did it burn so quickly? And not spread further to the cars? I imagine there would still be some major smoke and even flames remaining because they were not gone that long. Yeah, books and all are flammable but still. It was sad to have such a refuge and home gone though especially when the owner seems MIA.

And then we are left with another cliffie. Is this going to be a trend for the season? It's an interesting and infuriating choice.

I think I heard (maybe from Guy Bee at the Con?) that it's just the first 3 episodes that are linked like this - then it'll go back to the usual format. I do remember SOMEONE saying that the first three directors had to film the lead-in and exit scenes for each others episodes.

I guess Sam had wandered further off than he though - or maybe Bobby's house was made of paper. My cottage is made of paper...or at least, that's what we always joke.

But yes, a LOT of questions in this one.

Mark P. is amazingly creepy...I don't even have words. The whole scene where he's trying to get Sam to kill himself...just, so creepy.

I'm one who thinks that Sam's hand bled black and that it means something, but I don't know what. To be as non-spoilery as possible, next week Jensen is directing and often when an actor is directing his part needs to be very reduced. So, I'm expecting broken leg Dean next week and then the week after we will either have 2 months later or miracle cure at the end of this episode and I have no idea which it will be.

Hmmm....time will tell...I'm also leaning more towards Sam's hand bleeding black, but I haven't done a rewatch yet. I'm going to wait until Friday, before the next episode.

I always enjoy your comments but I thought the greatest plot hole is if that if Sam is Lucifer's vessel (just as Jimmy is Castiel's) how can Lucifer inflict physical or sexual torture on Sam without suffering himself? Mental torture I can understand - two minds struggling for ascendancy in one body but the rest well that just confuses me.

Hi, I'm sure Missyjack will have a response to this too - but I figured I would weigh in...

When Dean went to Hell, he didn't have his body with him, yet Alistair could inflict psychical torture on it nonetheless. It's my understanding that Angels only need their vessels on earth - once they are in heaven or hell, they could do without. So, Sam, being a soul, and Lucifer being an angel, would manifest physical bodies in Hell - separate from the physical body they may have traveled there with. In that way, Lucifer was separate from Sam while they were in the cage, and could therefore both mentally AND physically torture him. (It also explains why Castiel grabbed Sam's body without his soul - it is quite possible that Sam's soul was not in his body at the time either.

Enjoyed this episode tremendously, and you won't be seeing any spooning-jokes from me. I'm a fan of black humor, no kidding, but that's just tasteless. though I know the line is thin between it...

Poor Sammy :( Not like we didn't expect it, so for me, it wasn't really a big deal. There were hints enough about that kind of torture from Alistair (both vessels) and I'm pretty sure from Lucifer as well though I can't recall any right now. A friend of mine was like o.O "they said it!" and I thought "yes? They've always done. Just nobody listened..."

Anyway...

Well, see, I wondered a bit myself. So I re-watched and then checked out the distance between Stockton and Sioux Falls. Not too far, you can drive that in one day (ok, well, over here you can - dunno the roads in the USA...) or at least one-and-a-half.

The kid gets infected in Stockton, then the swim-team escalates. She meets Edgar, who chastises her (wasn't that girl awesome!!!) on the swing-set.
She says that she has an idea and needs Edgar's help. Now, I'm assuming Edgar (sorry, I always think about the cockroach in the Edgar-costume, from MIB...) apparently drives her and the swimmers to Sioux Falls - because he has some business (meaning the Winchesters) to attend to.

So it is a bit logical. Kid-girl needs driver to get her to a hospital where a surgeon would be available. Edgar needs to go to South Dakota. They team up, she kills Doctor (who was awesome too!), sets everything up, Edgar comes in with the swimmers.

See? Could work that way.

So, I knew this wasn't the real Dean...and I would have known it anyway (I'd like to think), because Hallucination!Dean is MEAN. He tells Sam that they should take him to a psych hospital and that Sam isn't going to get better and...general mean stuff.


Well, I thought it was him the first few moments. But in the car - definitely not Dean.

Also, someone pointed out that when Sam is hallucinating Lucifer, everything Luci says is from Sam's own mind. So the "American Psycho called St Dean" and "you'll never get better, you can't wash that off" is all from Sam, all that he believes himself. Because if Lucifer isn't real, everything must be from Sam's brain. And oh, boy :-( If we didn't know it already, now we know that his view of himself is just as bad as Dean's is of Dean.

Btw, I liked the Talk with Bobby. the "idjit" and I liked (though not in a tender way) how Dean's reaction to "how are you?" is "Who cares?"

Man, are those two messed up!


...and is it just me, or was Sam's wound oozing black? Because...um...that's a bit worrying.
It was pretty dark. Could be blood, but... gaelicspirit had the idea that when Sam fell onto the glass-shards, he might have gotten some weird blood inside him, which might make him hallucinate?

I don't know, it's an interesting idea. Would mean there was a cure - but it would also once again be about Sam and blood, so... well. And I kinda like this whole 'Sam's crazy'-theme.

I feel like I'm mourning Bobby's house more than I'm mourning Cas...and I am. I guess I don't really believe that we've seen the last of Cas...or maybe I'm just in denial.

me too.The mourning-thing. I think he might be back, in a way, just for a proper goodbye-death. But I'm mourning the house like I started to mourn the IMpala in the beginning of s5e22, when I thought the narration of its origins mean it would be destroyed. (I seriously cried more about that than I did about Sam in the end... *feelshorrible*)

I was kinda thinking Bobby was with the Sheriff - he DID say that he'd check in later when he got her from the hospital. But there was his car in front of the house... BUT: it wasn't burnt. So maybe he came back, it was already burnt and ... he did something. Went to Marcy? The neighbor with the wood-chopper?

Broken-leg-Dean. Hee. I wonder myself. Wouldn't it be awesome if he had a crutch? Or a leg-brace??? I know, you don't need a leg-brace for a broken tibia, but man.... I apparently have a fetish of Dean strapping something on his legs. Who knew...

I loved this episode, I truly did. Surely, I liked the first as well, but this one was really mind-blowing. So I'm hoping they're gonna be back to the show I fell in love with.
