Vid

I really want to make a Supernatural vid. I'm sick of having ideas (especially this current idea) and not being able to do anything with them. So, my question is:

Do you think that I should try to make something with MS Movie Maker (which I believe I can get for free) or do you think I should wait until I can afford better software? What's the consensus out there amongst people who are good at this kind of stuff?

Timelines and Clothing Catalogues

I'm still waiting on my S6 DVDs. I should be getting them soon though. Then I can confirm the timeline, start cataloguing S6 clothing, and do my rewatch posts.

Of course, sadly, I don't have a bluray player...which means I don't have access to the bluray features. So, if anyone out there has the bluray and notices any timeline information in the bluray extras, please let me know!

I'm also thinking of maybe doing a "Knowledge Timeline" - that records things like the fact that Sam and Dean hadn't encountered a demon before Phantom Traveller - or that they didn't know that a demon killed their mother until Scarecrow....facts like that. It's just an idea. Mainly because I'm tired of pre-series fics that have them naming Azazel when they're 15, even though they didn't actually know his name until after he was dead. And I know me doing a timeline won't change other people's inaccuracies, but at least I'll know that I'm contributing to solving the problem! Anyway yeah, just an idea...I don't know where I'd get the time for it really, but it sounds like a fun project (to me, because I'm crazy and I really like making timelines.)

Fic

I'm being extrodinarily slow, and I apologize. I've got one piece nearly done and ideas for more demented'verse related snippets. I've also got a major non-fanfic writing project in the works, which I'll tell you more about in October.

Life in General

I still don't have a job, but I'm working on it. I have to find a job soon or I'm screwed...but I'm trying not stress too much.

I for one would LOVE an event timeline! ('cause I care about canon facts in fanfic too)

I know nothing about making vids. *sadface* I hope you get an answer because I'd really like to see what you'd make!

Good luck on the job hunt! *fingers crossed*

I'd like to see what I'd make too! Sadly, I don't know if I have any vid-making flisters...so...I might have to go seek out a vid-community somewhere and see if I'm allowed to ask questions.

I just really want to make this freaking vid.

And thanks for the good wishes on the job hunt and the support for the additional timeline :) Much appreciated!

The Knowledge Timeline is a great idea! Things like that bother me too. I mean I've seen so many fics where the boys see vampires pre-series when Sam and Dean found out about them at the end of S1. And I understand is it's a complete au and they avert the future therefore they CAN have learned about vampires earlier, but most often it's not...If you ever need any help just ask!

Keep up the good work!

Very true, that annoys me as well. I mean, fine, if it's an AU, it's AU...but if the person is trying to write canon compliant, then it's slightly annoying.

Thanks for the encouragement!

One thing that annoys me a lot is the panic room. Sam and Dean didn't know about it before 4.02. Now, it's possible that it existed long before season 1, but isn't it likely that Bobby would have locked Dean in a demon proof room to prevent him from dying and going to Hell?!

Date: 2011-09-17 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
Oh man, YES THIS!

In my head!canon, Bobby built the panic room BECAUSE Dean went to hell...because he was sitting there drinking, mourning his pseudo-son, and thinking "if only I had a demon proof safe-room that I could have locked him in..." so he built it...and then sat in there thinking, "too little too late, Singer."

Uh...sorry, that got depressing. What I meant to say was: I agree completely.

Yes to the Knowledge Timeline!!!!

I can't tell you how many pre-series fics I've read where the guys hunt demons (when clearly the first one they ever encounter is in PHANTOM TRAVELER) or where they use salt-loaded shotgun shells.... Dean clearly states in the PILOT that it's something he and John figured out while Sam was at Stanford....

*headdesks*

Actually, believe it or not, it's not until HOOKMAN that we find out about the salt shotgun shells! It's amazing. But you are right, Dean indicates that it's something he and John figured out while Sam was at Stanford.

So yes, definitely a need for the knowledge timeline. I will pencil it into my schedule. ;)

I tend to ignore that part in my own headcanon, because if true, that makes John (and Dean and Sam) look kind of silly, since they actually exist, aren't unusual, and have been around for a while. One of my neighbors keeps some on hand in case a bear (or a burglar, i suppose) gets into his house.

From: [identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com
Yeah, there's that about it too - mind you, I just amend it to them using iron-bullets before the salt-ones, so that they still had something to shoot at the ghosts.

It's inconsistent in canon anyway, because Dean had his first sawed-off when he was still a kid, and in the show they almost always only use salt-rounds in the sawed-offs...so, yeah...I think that's one aspect of canon that people can play around with a bit, because the line in Hookman was very obviously just explaining to the uneducated audience that there was such a thing as salt-rounds.

From: [identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com
Yeah. Though there were a few other things like that... I can't think of them now, but I remember talking about them before, the kind of canon errors I'm willing to overlook in fic because it makes more sense to ignore it, even within canon proper.

Haha...yes, yes...as you can see, your previous encouragement of the idea has only taken root in my brain :P

It's only a matter of time now...

I'm such a timeline freak....

From: [identity profile] harsens-rob.livejournal.com
You know, I basically support any and all attempts to create any sort of timeline about anything ever. It's completely freaky how much I love looking at timelines!

And, also, detailed information about alternate Earths, even if I have no involvement in the fandom other than reading about them... I don't know... it's a fetish or something.

So, I say: If you wish to spend the time, then for goodness sake get busy! I HAVE SPOKEN [in my own mind, that means something].

As to the VID, I alas, have never made the attempt. I, though, would also love to see what you could come up with. You're so detail oriented, so I've no doubt you could find songs that fit your images perfectly and perhaps in clever or unexpected ways. I just have one request [and, this means something in my own head] ... NO MORE Evanescence!

Well, it looks like the knowledge timeline is a winner! :)

Me and my bestfriend were once going to write a story that took place on an earth that was sun-facing...like, half of it was always in the sun and half of it was always in the dark, and you could really only live in between.

And don't worry, I will not use Evanescence! :P At first I was thinking Sarah McLachlan, now I'm thinking Stone Temple Pilots - I've got a theme, so I have to find a song that fits it...and oddly enough, those two artists so far have the only two viable songs I've found. I'm still keeping my ears open though.

Okay, wait....

There was this one DS9 YouTube vid about Ziyal (Dukat's daughter) that used this song. I can't find it now, so I guess the creator was deleted or banned or whatever...

... The point is that this song would be PERFECT for Dean Winchester.

So, you may use this ONE song... because I can't find the video that I really loved that used it. [Yes, I know. It is supremely arrogant to think I can tell you what you 'may' or 'may not' use; I'm not delusional, I just like to think I am because life would be awesome that way :-o )

Anywho - Dean and "Field of Innocence" would be frikkin' awesome. In fact, I can actually see Sam as the main character in this, considering S5 and the Lucifer deal.... Or, even (man, I miss her) Ellen ... or Bobby (but it might be harder to come up with images that would fit the song).

{When I said "no Evanescence" I should have included Sarah as well... it was done, and already in BTVS. God, I'm such a demanding bitch! But, I also feel I'm right.}

You know what? Forget me. Just do what you feel. Just remember, the "cool images ain't enough" still stands. Go with a definite theme or story.

[Oh, here is the lyrics too: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/evanescence/fieldofinnocence.html]

Haha, I'll make my current vid idea first, before I go off taking requests - but thanks for giving me a caveat. :P

And don't worry, the song I would want to use by Sarah is NOT one of her most well-known ones (ie: the ones that have been done to death)...and in any case, I'm leaning more towards STP, just because they fit the music of the show better. So, YES, you are demanding bitch, but you DO have a point. :P

And again, I TOTALLY have theme, if I can figure out the software, I assure you that my vid would be kick ass!

I seconded/thirded/fourthed/whatever-the-number-is for the timeline. It's great to know, and for those (like me) who keeps forgetting that Sam doesn't know everything because not everything happened prior Stanford (like the rock salt bullets thingy).

I think in consensus Sony Vegas is the best vid maker so far; the things that can be done with that takes your breath away. HOWEVER, most of it does rely on the filmmaker's vision of the vid, cuz it doesn't help if you have a great software and your vid went in all directions. WMM is the basic, maybe you can meddle around with that to test the waters?

My "go to" right now for SPN vids is 'anaapenas', but that is because I've bought into the Dean/Cas pairing and ana does so with humor and border-gay-porn insertion.

For BTVS/AtS, it is Charmax76

For a combo-verse, I haven't found anyone that I favorite a lot, though I do have favorited YouTube vids.

I agree whole-heartedly

This is very true. If you're going to do this '_acre', or anyone, you need to really *know* where and what you're trying to highlight.

As a veteran YouTube watcher, I can tell you that a great song isn't enough. Neither is picking out 'highlights' of a favorite series. You need to have an overall theme or storyline in order to really make a video pop. A completely random series of clips because you liked the music and thought those clips were 'cool' or 'the best' won't work. If you're disorganized, your video is going to look disorganized. If you love certain moments, and it doesn't match the song or the overall feeling you want to portray, the best thing you can do is leave them behind for a different video.

Yes, I have a very clear vision and overall theme picked out. I'm a big fan of vids as meta, so I like vids where there is obviously a lot of thought put into it.

I really like the stuff that Loki/Secretly-to-Dream comes up with...of course, that's probably a standard that I could never match with, but it's always good to strive for something brilliant.

Thanks! Maybe it'll be something I save up for. I'm sort of the type of person who wants to do something RIGHT when they decide to do it...but, I suppose I could meddle around with WMM and see if I can come up with anything.

But yeah, don't worry, I have a vision, and I don't think it's going to go off in all directions. :)

And another vote for the knowledge timeline! Looks like it's happening eventually... ;)

The knowledge timeline would be awesome. You're right that it wouldn't stop the inaccuracies but then we could complain more because there's a handy resource guide readily available. ;D Not that the DVDs are a handy resource guide available. :X I'm all for giving people another helpful research guide. Now if they could figure out when cell phones would have been affordable to the general public.... >.> <.< lol

Helpful research guides are so much fun to make too. :) But yeah, even I sometimes forget things like the salt-shell thing.

My mum first got a cellphone around 1995, I believe...haha, but yeah, we definitely weren't calling each other in the '80s. This is what happens when teenagers write fic ;) I remember the big thing was that we had a portable phone in the house that had a range that went half-way down the block. So technically, we could take calls in our friend's house.

Argh... it's so sad when you're so behind...

... Which is absolutely me!

It took forever to even get a cordless and that is only because the *ex? current but living somewhere else? It's too complicated to go into here* bought it for "us" for X-Mas.

Cripey, I'm so behind everyone else. I'll just get to Twitter when no one else even remembers what that is...! *Sigh*

;-p (No, seriously, though. I'm tragically always behind the times.)

I'm also always behind the times - but it's more a financial problem. :P

Well when you're known for your research, it's okay to forget things once in awhile. It's just my cranky old lady genes that make me really annoyed when people don't even take the time to look to see if something they want to write would have even been feasible at the time or given this circumstances. I'm spoiled by writers like you that care about the details. The attention so small details makes a story so much better imo.

An event timeline sounds like an EXCELLENT thing to do. I get frustrated when things don't match up, and I'd love to have a database to double-check.

Sounds like a consensus! So, now it's just a question of when the heck I'm going to get around to making it...probably soon. I get impatient when I have new project ideas. ;)
