Bobby's Long-Necked Henley

After he is resurrected, Dean burrows his first change of clothes from Bobby. That includes this long-necked grey-brown Henley. Its buttons run from collar to sternum.

APPEARANCES:

Dean puts in on in Lazarus Rising (4x01), after he’s convinced Bobby that he’s not a demon or shifter, and he’s thus gained access to a shower and borrowed fresh clothes. He wears it until he and Bobby track down Sam. He changes out of it after Bobby leaves to call Pamela and Dean tells Sam that he doesn’t remember Hell.

FATE: Returned to Bobby.

It didn't occur to me while watching the show that this was Bobby's but looking here it's so obvious because it practically hangs off him. Even though Dean's taller, he definitely doesn't have the girth.

Also? In this shot, Dean actually looks tall.

It didn't occur to me the first time I watched either - it was only when I was paying particular attention to the show that I realized they really didn't look like Dean's clothes.

And yes, you're right. It's pretty rare for Dean to actually look as tall as he is...but this show does it.

They totally don't look like Dean's clothes and it's a BRILLIANT move on Show's part. It's the same general getup -- henley, buttondown, jeans -- that no one really notices at first glance because Dean pretty much wears that general layered look ALL THE TIME. But when you look closely, the cut and colors are all wrong. As in the sublteties of the cut and colors are just not what he normally would wear.

The thing is, he's really TALL in RL but somehow Show makes him look short. They must have a casting sheet that goes "Must be over 6'1...." or something like that. Because Dean consistently looks tiny. Then there's the scenes with just him and Bobby and he suddenly seems to gain inches. My favorite shot is the one in NO EXIT where it's just him and Jo... he looks so RIDICULOUSLY TALL AND BIG next to her. It makes me giggle.

Haha, yeah. I like on the S3 Gag reel where Jensen imitates meeting fans: "'You're taller in person' - I get that a lot"

I like to jokingly refer to Supernatural as Vancouver's Tall-People-Employer. :P If you think about it, every time they are going against something "evil" it makes sense for that evil thing to be tall and menacing...and that's pretty hard when one of the leads is 6'4" without shoes on.

Back to the shirt: Yes, he's still in the "hunter's uniform', but it's obviously not HIS uniform. It was the colour that really got me. Dean never wears that colour - and heavy layers are one thing, he really does swim in that shirt, and yes, basically the whole style of it is off. When he borrows Sam's shirt/Jacket, they fit him far better in the shoulders, and the only thing that gives them away as still not being his is the fact that A)Dean has never worn a corduroy jacket before, and B)the sleeves are too long.

That's so true about Supernatural being the Tall-People-Employer -- I want to know where they found that prisoner for FOLSOM PRISON BLUES. Y'know the one that makes Sam look short and small (which is actually no mean feat by any stretch of the imagination). And that's awesome about JA totally rolling with the whole "Wow. You're taller" thing. If they want to make Dean look gignormous, they can hire me! I don't even clear five feet.

I love your point -- on a second glance, the color really is all wrong for Dean. He has some tan, but sticks mostly to lighter shades of tan or otherwise blues and greens. And you have a great point about the shirt being heavier than most of his wardrobe. Not to mention he's swimming in it despite being about six feet tall and 175-ish pounds (I'm guessing). The style's just off.

And it's true about Sam's stuff fitting him far better through the shoulders. Or at least he isn't *drowning* in it. It's still big on him, granted, but he isn't swimming in it. And Sam's got the same style he does, for the most part, so it's less jarring and more DEAN. But like you say, the sleeves totally give it away that it's borrowed (not to mention he doesn't wear cords...).

I've been wondering the same thing about that dude in Folsom Prison Blues...I mean, geez...SO TALL AND LARGE! I often wonder if he's a local or an import (no lines - might be local, but very specific physical features - might be flown-in for the part.)

Most of the tall guys I know are tall and bean-pole thin. I know very few who are tall and muscular.

Dean usually wears beige - so, yeah, lighter less-orange tans. Other than that, it's blue and greens, and very occasionally plaid...which is another thing that indicated his shirt might be Sam's in Lazarus Rising.

I KNOW!!!! I think if I met that dude in RL, I'd shit myself. Hell, it'd take everything for me not to be intimidated by JP in person. But same here -- most tall guys I know are runner-types; as in they may not be beanpole thin (although there are those too) but they definitely are lean. And JA/Dean does fit that prototype -- he isn't particularly muscular but he isn't a beanpole either.

Yeah, definitely more beige than orange-y tans. And when he wear plaids I die... mostly because I have a *thing* for plaid flannel shirts. The plaid didn't jump out at me all that much because he does wear a beige-y plaid in NIGHTSHIFTER. The one in LAZARUS RISING, it's clearly a different plaid / shirt, but it didn't leap out at me as being out-of-sorts for Dean with the exception of the size...

Ok, I don't like being THAT person because this resource is FLAWLESS and I've had the BEST time reading it and I'm sure I'm going to use it as a reference a LOT in the future. The amount of time and effort taken to do this whole project is MOMENTOUS and you deserve major major kudos.

BUT! ^_^;;; I've noticed on at least three of the clothes sharing posts you've written burrow instead of borrow ;)

Hahaha, THANK YOU! As I tell many a reader - near-homonyms are my downfall. I will correct the posts :)

And I'm glad you appreciate the effort it took to make this clothing record! I'm looking forward to starting posts on S6 soon!

Dean wears one a little bit like this one in After School Special in the flashback and in promotional shots

If it's not listed under the beige Henley catagory, then I probably decided not to worry about what young-Dean and Sam were wearing when I catalogued this episode... with the exception of the purple plaid shirt, which I know I've listed.

I may check later and add it if it's not there.
