Last night I finished the book Come Thou, Tortoise by Jessica Grant.

My mother had given it to me for my birthday, and I highly recommend it! I'm not sure how my mum was able to basically pick out the perfect book for me (without presumably reading it first) - but she did. It starts off a little slow, but, when it picks up, it is well worth it. It is a cleverly disguised book, because you think it's just a bit of light reading, and then when you find yourself at the end, you want to go back and read from the beginning... and you can, because the whole book will be new again.

It is also set in Newfoundland, which I miss a great deal. Also, there is a Lada in it that has to be jump started by pushing it down the road and popping the clutch. (I spent a good portion of my life pushing a Lada down the road.)

Also, a TORTOISE! One of my FAVOURITE animals!  I love turtles/tortoises so much, I got one tattooed on myself for safe keeping. Also, also...the tortoise reads Shakespeare! WHY DO I NOT HAVE A SHAKESPEARE READING TORTOISE?! "I find Shakespeare's use of exponents curious."

When I put down this book, I really felt like Jessica Grant wrote it just for me. It was THAT lovely.

But what's it about? Well, like all good stories, it's just a book about love, home, and how sometimes how something is all depends on how you look at it.

Thanks Mum! (She reads everything I post here except episode reviews, fanfiction, and flocked posts)

According to Amazon, that book is over $100 and I can't get it in the US because it's CANADIAN! *cries*

WHAT?!?! This is a travesty! :(

If you want, I could buy it for you in Canada for ~$15, and then ship it to you in the states (which would probably cost me around $5-10) and then you could send me $25 or something and that'd probably cover most of it.

This does not bode well for Canadian authors who kick ass. Maybe my next job should be an underground book-smuggling ring. :P

NO LIE! I swear.... the original Canadian copy is like $100 but there's a tiny link to get an imported copy for about $20. Which is normal. But really. Seriously?!

But yes, we need to do a book-smuggling ring for Canadian/US authors...

Oh phew - well, I'm glad they have that tiny link to get an imported copy.

What also pisses me off about the book publishing world is that we don't get any translated books unless they're "The Girl With The..." level of popularity. I bet there are tons of amazing authors and stories being told in other languages, and the odds that we'll ever get to read them are slim to none. (Of course, it's harder to fund a translation/smuggling ring :P )

LOL! With my bookstore gig I bet I can get some awesome American books for you to smuggle. And as for funds, well, we can always take a page out of the Winchester Gospel and do credit card scams or hustle some pool. What's a little more illegal activities on top of smuggling?

But I *do* currently have a bookstore gig and I'm going to see if said bookstore can order the imported copy of the book from Canada for me because I get 30% off the cover price there.

:)

Nice! I hope they can! (Also, I hope you like it. Like most things, just because I like it doesn't necessarily mean that other people will...)

I'm such a voracious reader that it takes A LOT for me to hate a book... and besides WOOT! BOOKS!

I usually only hate books if they are too cumbersome to read. (If the language is too stilted and obtuse for me to get into the story).

Obviously, this one was not. ;)
