Hey guys - is it "knicked" or "nicked" when you are talking about stealing something and you are British?

I thought it was "knicked" but spellcheck doesn't like that. But then, what does spell check know? It also doesn't like "favourite."

(yes, this means I'm writing something that has a British person in it.)

Without the "k" i believe...the first spelling reminds me of knickers LOL

It's 'nicked'. Make sure you're using it in a highly 'Saxon' context- it's more common down south, hardly used in the borders and not in Scotland at all. Not sure about Wales but I'm pretty sure Ireland are on the same boat about it as Scotland... it at least would be RECOGNISED all over the UK, it's just very English, common with people exposed to the London scape though.

Hope that helps~! ^^

Wow! That helps a LOT! Thanks, I didn't even realize it was a localized colloquialism. I thought everyone used it.

But the character saying it is definitely from the south and has lived/worked in London for a while - so, yay! Using it correctly (and now spelling it correctly too!)

I suppose it depends where you are. I'm an Edinburgh girl, which has a huge English influence, but it's not a term we use at all, unless we're taking the piss or it's on telly... Well, I can't argue for every region, I do know it's a London influence originally. *continues to mumble and looks up the colloquial borders*

Central belt/North East. Could be an age difference too, or could be because you are more honest than me! ;)

Not used in Scotland?

Definately "nicked". And I use it and everyone I know does too and I'm from the north of England (Lancashire if you're interested).
