Dean's Red Plaid Shirt of Angst

Dean’s Red Plaid Shirt of Angst is really what inspired this entire project. I noticed that more often than not, when Dean was having a “moment” he was wearing this red/grey plaid shirt.

BEHOLD THE ANGST (APPEARANCES in picspam-form):

In Home (1x09), Dean wears the Red Plaid Shirt of Angst when Sam tells him about his visions...

...when they talk with the current owner of their old house, and when Dean calls John...


In Shadow (1x16), Dean wears the Red Plaid Shirt of Angst for the entire episode:


In an unprecedented move, Dean wears it when he is not angsty at all in Provenance (1x19). He wears it from after they find the dead old woman, until he burns the doll’s hair and saves the day (or at least Sam and Sarah). Dean is pleased with himself:


Setting us up for its most well known appearances, Dean wears the Red Plaid Shirt of Angst for the entire episode of All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1 (2x21):


We come to the shirt’s iconic scene in All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 (2x22), when Dean is still wearing it long after Sam’s death, as he kicks Bobby out and then performs his soliloquy over Sam’s dead body, and when he makes his deal....

...and when he hugs Sam after his resurrection...

...and when he’s trying to get Sam to rest instead of heading back into the fight:


Dean barely wears it in S3-S5, but it does still make angsty appearances. In Metamorphosis (4x04), Dean takes it out of the motel closet and shoves it in his duffle bag, as he attempts to dramatically leave Sam in anger:


I believe Dean wears it extremely briefly in Yellow Fever (4x06), in the scene where they discover that he is “haunted”:


In Sympathy For The Devil (5x01), Dean moves it out of the way in his duffle, as he searches for the information on John’s storage locker, just before Meg attacks and Bobby is injured:

I find myself a little too impressed that they use the wardrobe as props, too. Who'd notice, without going over it as carefully as you have? It tells me that those working in the less-noticed aspects of production think about these things just as much as those in charge of the more visible parts (writing, direction, etc.)

Yeah, I'm quite impressed with that myself. There's a few scenes that have Sam's shirts as props too. It's neat.

Also, I find it really interesting that the Winchesters take the time to hang up their clothes when they are staying some place. I don't travel nearly as much as them, and I tend to literally just live out of a suit-case when I do.

I am amazed at what you have done with this whole If clothes could talk project - it's unbelievable! I'm kind of in awe that you actually paid so much attention and went back to write about it and provide pictures and references... wow. Kudos! And this little entry has been my favorite so far! I love the pattern of this shirt being angsty for Dean!

And about it not being angsty in Provenance? Well, it could be - because the entire episode, Dean is angsting about Sam and how he hasn't been with anyone since Jessica and he's worried for Sam and keeps pushing him to be with Sarah... :) (or for us wincest lovers, we could presume that he's jealous of Sarah (even though he's pushing Sam to be with her cuz he's an awesome brother and wants Sam to be happy) for attracting Sam's attention when Dean wants him all to himself? :D)

I didn't pay this much attention the first few times through the series! I went back through the episodes specifically with this project in mind once I decided to do it. Now, though, I can't shut off my brain! When I watch a new episode I'm constantly getting distracted and giddy over what they are wearing :P

Arguably, EVERY episode of Supernatural ends up being angsty in SOME way...but Dean doesn't shed any tears in Provenance - nor does his chin wibble, so I count it as a non-angsty appearance ;) ...but yes, technically, it doesn't COMPLETELY break the pattern.

A friend just told me about this. I am in awe of you for undertaking this massive project. Thank you so much for doing this!

The Red Shirt of Angst is my all time favorite Dean shirt, and Sam's Brown hoodie is my favorite Sam piece, although I have a piece of the Angst shirt and also Sam's white/blue stripe from AHBL. They are my treasures now.

The Angst and the Hoodie are have the most history of anything else. I really hope when the show wraps up they will auction the most important pieces for charity (and the amulet and other jewelry the guys wore). The fans will really show what we are made of with the money raised.

I'd love to own one of their shirts. I'm not sure what will happen when the show ends - they'll probably just have a set-sale like everyone else. Maybe Jared and Jensen will end up with a few pieces in their wardrobe, since they're always accidentally wearing things home...but hopefully someone is brilliant enough to think of a charity auction. :)

SQUEE! My favorite Dean shirt! Though I call it The Purple Flannel, but, that's only because it looks purple to me. Thank you for this entry, I hand't realized just how many appearances my fave shirt made on the show. I could only recall a handfull of episodes off the top of my head. Dean/Jensen look sooooooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooooood in this shirt!

I've actually had a lot of people tell me that it's purple! Colours are so subjective sometimes :P

Yes, it's very hard to tell colours correctly on the show (not to mention that colour perception itself is actually subjective)...a lot of people think the shirt is purple too, not just you! :P

Unfortunately, I have no idea. A few friends have tried to track it down and failed. My suggestion would be to go to your local thrift store and see if you can find something similar, even if it's not the same.

Otherwise, if you'd like to cosplay as Dean, I'd suggest looking at Carhartt clothing, while not as iconic as this shirt, Dean wears a lot of Carhartt shirts. :)
