Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things

 I just watched Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (2x04) again to take screenshots and catalog the clothes for that on-going pointlessly time-consuming project of mine. And I noticed a few things:

1. Jensen has an extra chain around his neck in several scenes in the episode. It's tucked under his clothes for most scenes, but you can still see it up by the base of his neck. I wonder what that was about and why no-one in wardrobe or the continuity people caught it....

2. Kim Manners REALLY knew how to film Jensen. Seriously....I don't think there's a single shot in that episode where Jensen is not featured on some stunning angle or some stunning close up. I know, some of you might say "there is no bad angle with Jensen", and you may have a point, but I still stand by the fact that Kim Manners really knew what he was doing when it came to filming Jensen, because DAMN.

3. That being said, when Dean and Sam are arguing on the street, the angle used makes Sam look like a giant! Which he is...but DUDE. What was Jared here? 23? 24? Whatever age he was, I think the beginning of S2 is the point where he started to turn into Gigantor. Let me get my screen caps here....

Also, this is episode is the first appearance of the shirt everyone loves to hate:



....mmm, Dean shoulders.... Oh, sorry, got distracted there. Look at Sammy! He's all sad because we don't like his shirt...also, he broke his hand. 

I've had a completely unproductive day, besides capping this episode.

Good point! It was certainly the highlight of my day ;)

I guess the flowers are on the inside so that you can roll up the sleeves and confuse people? What gets me about this shirt is that I really can't picture Sam walking into a thrift store and saying "ooo, weird flowery shirt - SCORE!" Seriously.

I have honestly NEVER noticed this shirt before. o.o AND IT'S SO WEIRD. idk. However, I COULD see them going to those thrift stores where you just grab a paper bag and load it up with WHATEVER you want and then pay a couple bucks for the bag. I've been to a couple places like that. And what looks like an innocent white button down at first glance (and that's all he sees before he tosses it into the bag) and then gets back to the motel and is all "WTF." but wears it anyways…

He's still wearing it in S5, so no matter how WTF his initial reaction may have been, he's obviously found it a useful shirt :-P

But I think you are right - that a thrift store grab-bag is the only logical explanation for this shirt ending up in his wardrobe.

You know, it might not have come from a thrift store. It may have been from a factory-outlet place - I don't know if Canada has them, but they're basically stores where factories sell wearable 'mistakes' (I got a really nifty black vest at one years'n'years ago where the buttons had been sewn on backwards; they were supposed to be white and black striped, but the backs were just plain white). Maybe it was a case of a trainee sweatshop sewer who'd sewn the thing wrong-side-out. Just a theory...

Hmm...interesting theory. It could possibly explain jillsjourney's question about why the flowers are on the inside. :-P

I LOVE factory outlets. We do have them in Canada, but they are difficult to track down sometimes. One thing I like about living in Vancouver though, is that there's a Lucky Brand Jeans factory outlet in Seattle - so, whenever I drive down to visit my sister, I can get awesome jeans for really cheap ($30 American instead of $100+ Canadian).

well, i happen to LIKE the shirt. of course, i'm weird.....

and as for Dean's extra necklace, i did read somewhere that it's Jensen's, and was trying to hide it, which is why it was under his shirt... dunno, that's just what i'd heard.

Yay for liking the shirt! I'm really indifferent to it. Like I said, I just can't really picture Sam saying "I've GOT to have this!" But other than that, it's fine.

Yeah, I'd assume it was Jensen's, for all that he's gotten rid of Dean's jewelry this past season - Jensen himself wears an awesome lot of accessories when he's not working. I just wonder why he left it on at all.

yeah, i don't know why either? and i don't know why Dean wasn't wearing any jewerly this season either. i know he said "it's the apocolypse," but that's not an excuse! ;)

I know! It's like Jensen just decided that he didn't like jewelry anymore - only, when I see pictures of him at Cons, he's usually covered in bracelets - so, he just decided that he didn't like DEAN'S jewelry anymore.

I just wish they had SHOWN us how he lost the jewelry, instead of just having it disappear unceremoniously. They showed the amulet sure...and that was pretty heartbreaking. But the ring and bracelets deserved at least a "oops! Dean, I accidentally knocked your ring down the drain" "Goddamn it, Sam!" or you know SOMETHING.
