Actually, the apocalypse is kind of an exception for me. I think they really could have done more to make it seem... I don't know, more present. Just little touches, didn't have to be huge bouts of angst, that let you know that there were things going on off screen continuously. It would have helped keep the tension up.
Also, on smaller things like the supposed double bounty on Dean's head - well, at the very least it would have been amusing to see them, oh, spotting a jehovah's witness and hiding behind a newspaper or something. It wouldn't have had to been huge or played up for laughs, but it would have been a little reminder in the stand alone episodes.
