Your observations about the difference in Claire's and Alex's reactions to their traumas highlight 2 things for me:
1) SPN can be very psychologically sound in how the characters are written, not just Sam and Dean* but also the other supporting ones and
2) I love how you picked up on it and pointed it out because I didn't even think about it--so now I can appreciate this episode even more!
*And it was the consistent psychological sense their characters exhibited that hooked me on the show.
And I love all your other observations as well, particularly about Sam and Dean 'parenting' the girls. Those are the moments that really make this show shine! I do agree with you, however, that the boys' eating habits at the dinner table seemed overdone, particularly Sam's. And I agree that Dean ought to know how to roast a chicken by now. Although I should talk--I don't cook anything anymore...
