I have many the same feelings about Castiel as you do. It'll be cool to see him play a new part - but I'm also wondering what his train of thought was... Misha suggested at a convention recently that Cas was feeling unloved and expendable... but was that it? Or was it just a loss of hope in general? Or was it yet another foolish idea of how he could help save the world only to condemn it further? I don't know.
