I felt the same way about the storylines (not)intersecting.
Agree completely on the magic readable diary - my thesis project for my MA involved reading hand-written police reports from 1916 (in english!) so, only 100 years ago and in a language I am very familiar with - and it was quite a challenge!
Yeah, it also paints them in a little bit more sinister light - though, it's all about perspective of course. ;)
