Yes, I think Seasons 1 - 3, and 4 and 5 even were at least partly about paying homage to their favorite horrors.
I never felt that suspense that made me hide my head in my pillow with a horror film though. Maybe it was because we knew Sam and Dean were always going to get through it (except for shocker season finales!!) and because they were hunting the monster - not the other way around. Plus, there was so much character development as opposed to a horror film in which people with shallow stereotypical personalities ran around reacting/screaming. And even in Season 1 we were already feeling sympathy for some types of monsters.
I do miss the darker episodes though. I think Sam and Dean looked more heroic fighting evil in the dark horror-film lighting than out in the daylight as they are now.
