"what if a hunter had found me as Gadreel and killed me" I found this line to be extremely out of place in the context of what Dean and Sam were talking about.
All your questions asked about if Dean is right/wrong, the Ezekial/Gadreel thing - all such grey areas - I don't think there is a right or a wrong. Good intentions, actions beget consequences, good or bad. All of our actions have unknown consequences, and I think the true test is, is how we deal with those consequences. How are we going to act and/or react to the consequences put upon us from our own actions, or actions of others that affect us. So far, with Dean and Sam, their actions/reactions to all of this mess haven't exactly been stellar or something to emulate. As they continue to wade through the emotional fallout of everything, I do hope that they will be able to have better actions/reactions to everything.
What's the first step in recovery???? Good question. My first thought would be for them to separate from each other and try and get some perspective on the situation, but since that's not going to happen, I really don't know where they go from here.
