Dean truly doesn't see Sam's problem with his agency being taken away from him because when Dean came off the rack in hell, he did abominable things of his own choice. That is the worst he can envision. So when Sam is upset that Dean took his choice away and Sam's body did evil things, Dean is unconsciously thinking 'what's the problem? It wasn't you choosing to do bad things, so no big deal.'
Very astute character observation! I hadn't even thought of that, but it makes perfect sense.
In season 3 Sam was torn to pieces over the prospect of Dean going to hell. And his statement that he wouldn't do 'anything' to save Dean is emotional growth...that I don't want to see :( I want my boys needing each other to live :(
I can completely understand this - there's a certain amount of romance to their codependent relationship that feels satisfying and emotionally needed. At the same time, it's not actually healthy, no matter how much it feels "right" for them to be that way.
That being said, I too would like to see Sam rescue Dean more - it doesn't even have to necessarily be in some desperate scenario where he has to make a difficult moral choice - I just want Sam to be less of Dean's damnsel-in-distress. I'm hoping that whenever the Mark of Cain storyline kicks into gear that's where it will lead.
