Look at how Sherlock patted Anderson after that explanation. It was out of character, I think, telling us that was not the real explanation, just what the internet and media had come up with. I expect a big reveal, likely in the last episode. Or never.
Loved it and agree on most of what you say. Clearly, Sherlock was right not to trust John, judging by how he kept blowing up at him. But a word would have been nice, both Sherlock to him and him to Mrs. Hudson, who said almost the exact words to him about how neglected she felt.
