It is in the show, because the years spent between S5-S6 and between S7-S8 are ignored in the narrative. So, Sam dies in 2010 and then a year later he returns to Dean...in 2010. Dean goes to purgatory in 2012 and Sam spends a WHOLE YEAR with Amelia, and then Dean returns...in 2012!
Basically, the show repeats years, so sep-may 2010/2011 happened twice, as did sep-may 2012/2013.
Make sense?
Personally, I don't like repeating years, so instead I follow what would have happened in "reality" - in that time would have actually acted like TIME and continued forward rather than looping back on itself.
