Quick Reaction: 8x03 Heartache
Oct. 17th, 2012 11:41 pmWe had a very good time watching this episode tonight :)
So, let's see what I remember!
When I first saw the jogger guy in the park and then that dude in the red shirt ran past him, I thought it was the classic "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you" thing...but nope! The dude in the red shirt WAS the bear!
I love Dean talking to Sam in the farmer's market and then sort of...coming to...and saying "Where the hell are we?" Hahaha... I also love Sam for shopping at farmers markets. This introduced fault #1 though: There was no way that apple was organic. A Red Delicious that's that shiny and large? Not possible. ;)
Anyway, it's off to a side-hunt, even though Sam just wants to focus on the Kevin/Hell's Gate thing so that he can retire... this is very S1, except replace Kevin with "Dad" and Hell's Gate with "The Thing That Killed Mom."
It involves a lot of driving.
I like Dean in the car saying how this is where he's supposed to be - driving in the car with Sam at his side, hunting monsters. And Sam is like "Or you know, you could do it alone" and Dean replied saying that it wasn't like he had another brother that he could talk to! Me and my friend were both like "ADAM! For the love of god, SOMEONE rescue Adam!"
Anyway, super health-nut freak was entertaining. I love the picture of Arnold on this wall, and him going on about how you can never have too much fiber and Sam basically saying "SEE DEAN! I TOLD YOU!" Heheheh.
Oh! I forgot about Jensen's dad! That was fun! It was funny that they had his character and Dean kind of square off against each other. You can definitely see Jensen in the eyes (or see Alan in Jensen's eyes), but it didn't take me as far out of the scene as when John and Joan Cusack try to play anything other than brother and sister. :P
Apparently Jensen's mother was somewhere in the background too? I don't know what she looks like, but I think it's adorable that he has his family in the show.
Crazy guy was good too. The eyes were freaky. I had to shake my head at Dean - yeah, Dean, just speaking louder isn't going to cut through the crazy better. :P
The gorging out of the eye thing was gross...sometimes I'm really glad that this is a non-HBO show and Supernatural does the "less is more" method of shooting horrible scenes.
The Indian doctor looked really familiar. Does anyone know what she's from? Maybe she just really reminds me of the girl from Bend It Like Beckham... unless she IS that girl. I don't think she is though.
So, Sammy was a football fan! Little tidbit we didn't know about our younger Winchester. Yeah, the more of this show I watch, the more I realize that Sam REALLY isn't the nerd of the family. Also, Brick Holmes is an awesome name.
Eleanor was cool. What's with Supernatural naming their older white ladies Eleanor and then putting them in mansions?
As soon as she fixated on Dean's question about the Occult and then ended the interview, I knew something was up... and hey, so did Dean.
Oh, I should say, that stripper girl...Randa? She was VERY striking, my goodness. (Fault #2: There is no way you could bite into a heart like that with human teeth...my friend knows from personal experience. [note: my friend has eaten cow heart. She is not a cannibal.])
I love the scene where they break into the mansion and go through the master bedroom closets... and Sam's childhood hero gets torn apart in front of him...awww. First he's not a natural blond, then it appears as though he sleeps with his mother.
But then when they find the secret room with all the awesome stuff, Sam is like "I KNEW he had a room like this!" Hahahaha, oh Sam... you were kind of a weird kid, weren't you. Also, Sam, not only were your love interests secret monsters, but your childhood heroes were too?!? Oh Sam...oh Sammy Sam. I think someone should check on Amelia... and possibly the dog.
So, yeah, um...I have a question...if Brick was a near 1000 year-old Mayan, how come he was a white guy? It can't be THAT hard to find a picture of a native central american dude, can it? My cousin is only 1/4 native south american and he looks more native than Brick. They could have even gotten a native Canadian dude and taken his picture...there are plenty of them in the Vancouver area. I'm just saying. Anyway, I guess that was my only serious quibble with the episode.
I like the fact that Eleanor/Betsy came clean and helped them in the end. And I really liked the exchange she had with Dean, where she said "You must think I'm a monster" and he said, "No, I just think you married one." I think it actually shows a fundamental change in Dean's thinking that's actually more monster-friendly, because back in the day, he TOTALLY would have taken her to task for being a bystander while her guy was killing folks - but he actually seemed to understand and forgive her. Now, if her husband were alive, he'd still gank him, but he'd probably apologize. Now, is this Benny's influence or Cas'? Dean DID let a vampire loose on the world after giving him a hug...but, he also slaughtered his way through purgatory to find his angel.... so, hey, maybe both.
This brings us to the showdown with Randa. Crazy that she actually CALLED the other organs to her. But they foolishly thought they had Sammy out for the count. HA! Also...um, I don't know, but if I were Jensen and I were directing an episode, I would definitely be like "so, how about this sexy girl straddles me and runs her fingers over my chest? Yes? Yes. Good. No, run those fingers over my chest SLOWER...yeah, that's it." Hehehe. (I'm kidding of course, I'm sure it was all in the script and Jensen is a gentleman...I'm just saying that *I'm* not.)
And then we get the conversation in the car on the way out of town...with Dean negating Sam's feelings - "That's just how you feel right NOW"...um, right, but that doesn't make the feelings less true, Dean!
And we get a flashback to Sam's life with Amelia... I was actually thinking we'd get way more flashbacks in this episode. I liked the one we did get though. Firstly, I like the over saturated dreamlike quality of it - definitely Sam thinking back on it in an idealized way (like the first bit of 500 Days of Summer).
I also loved how it was HORRIBLY HEARTBREAKING.
1) Sam runs out of the woods yelling for Amelia and saying "this isn't funny." - Now, who wants to bet that Amelia "disappeared" while they were walking together or something and Sam FLIPPED, because um, yeah, maybe not good to disappear on a guy who had his only family and friend disappear into thin air the year before. :P
2) "Have you never seen a birthday cake before?" .... Um, probably not since Stanford. :(
3) I wonder what age Sam told her he was...
Oh yeah, that reminds me...Sam had been looking into universities! Aww... Sammy.
Also, I really need to timeline this season (so far I haven't), but if Sam had a birthday with Amelia, then that means Dean was actually gone for a year and some change, not just a year.
I would like to see some more Sam flashbacks...mainly because I'm a sucker for emotional pain and I'd love to see his grieving/recovery process after Dean's "death." I'd also really like to know what happened between Sam and Amelia - because Sam made it sound like they had broken up even before Dean came back...so, you know, why? TELL US MORE! Also, what happened to Cas? Also, when is Dean going to come off this adrenaline high? Because this cannot possibly be sustainable without a HUGE emotional crash at some point...
All in all though, a fine third outing for Jensen's directing skills. I think he did a good job, especially considering how much of Dean there was in the episode! It definitely looks like the writers aren't cutting him any acting slack anymore when he wants to direct. Poor Jensen. I don't think it affected his performance at all though - the boy has talent. :) I'm not a film student, but from what I saw there were some great shots and very nice...director stuff. (Like I said, I'm not a film student. :P )
I'm not spoilered for next episode, besides the preview, and I don't want to be...but I hope it's as good as this one. I'm definitely interested in the style it seems to be filmed in. :)

Date: 2012-10-18 06:57 am (UTC)I am intrigued by happened in Sam's year. Obviously there was all this awesome stuff with Amelia and Riot BUT why did he leave to head back to Rufus' cabin? Why no contact? I do like that he's quietly taking a clear stand with Dean and i feel so sad for Dean's desperation. Sure he wanst to be a hunter - but he wants to do it with Sam.
Oh and I thought a great case of the week - i was really intrigued!
My only issue was that they called it a cricket mallet - it's a bat!
Oh also - possible guess that they chose a guy who did not look strongly Mayan, as otherwise it would less believable that he was a successful American sports person in the early 20th century??? (not that that's reasonable - they could've tweaked the script...)

Date: 2012-10-18 07:03 am (UTC)He went to Rufus' cabin because Dean called him. I just don't know why he was still sleeping at Amelia's place when he made it sound like they had broken up already...also, she just watched him go and seemed non-plussed.
My only issue was that they called it a cricket mallet - it's a bat!
Maybe Sam and Dean don't know that though! They don't seem like cricket players to me ;)

True, but they could have said he was Italian or something...they used to get Italians to play natives back in the day, so obviously if you wanted to fool a bunch of racists, you could claim to be Italian, y/n? :P
See, you know more names of director stuff than me! I loved that high tracking shot at the start! :)

Date: 2012-10-18 07:07 am (UTC)Hee! Director stuff. :P
Oh yes. Nice rack focus shots and I loved those extreme close ups when they were reading the letters. I think I remember reading that Jensen actually got to go down to LA and oversee the editing of this episode, which he wasn't able to do with the other two. I think it shows. :D

Date: 2012-10-18 07:13 am (UTC)I didn't know he got to oversee the editing on this one, that's great! He's a talented dude, and I'm sure it was really hard for him to give up so much control over the finished product with the last ones.

Date: 2012-10-18 07:16 am (UTC)Yes fail on the whitewashed Mayan. However win on mythology bc the Maize god was also god of jade and cacao - and dancing, hence the stripper!

Yes fail on the whitewashed Mayan. However win on mythology bc the Maize god was also god of jade and cacao - and dancing, hence the stripper!
Awesome! We were wondering - "Wouldn't Cacao be the God of chocolate? Now, that's a god I could worship..." ;)

Date: 2012-10-18 08:42 am (UTC)All the fruits shown look perfect, no? But I think what they're looking for is that it looks YUMMY LOL
Also, Brick Holmes is an awesome name.
Have you ever watched the reality TV Holmes on Homes? The name reminded me of that :p
if Brick was a near 1000 year-old Mayan, how come he was a white guy?
Thank you for pointing it out, although I didn't realise it until you wrote that. I guess that might have been an oversight? But yeah, they really have to keep it straight, because dedicated fans notice things like these.
I think Sam's flashbacks are all centred around Amelia and the dog, which is so domestic, and quite the opposite to the setting of the show, which makes an interesting contrast, and I'm curious to find out more. Still don't like Amelia though LOL
I like the direction in this episode too. I think Jensen did a good job, and it's different from the first two episodes, even clueless me can tell. :p

Date: 2012-10-18 11:01 am (UTC)I liked this episode. Just... I liked it. Interesting plot (though I admit, now that you mentioned it, they would have been better off with a little Mayan-looking guy...) and nice little hints at emotional breakdown in the future, love, in the old-fashioned way that it cures all evil (Betsy and her man... I feel for them, I feel for her) and DAMN, Dean being near-assaulted by a stunning stripper??? I really don't need much more.
Ah, that's not true. I need some more, as I found out last episode. That was ok story-wise, and interesting plot-wise, but something was missing in it and so I am really happy with this one.
And then we get the conversation in the car on the way out of town...with Dean negating Sam's feelings - "That's just how you feel right NOW"...um, right, but that doesn't make the feelings less true, Dean!
Yeah... and I bet Dean isn't really trying to convince SAM. Or well, maybe he is, like "if I say it often enough, maybe it's not true"
Ah, damn, I really love the brothers not being 100% on the same track. I loved it in the first few seasons, and I love it now. They are not matched twins. They are two grown men who want different things in life, and that would be perfectly okay if one of them didn't so desperately need someone to keep him sane and try hard as he can to keep him.
So I also loved the little mean jibes at Sam - not because I agree with them, but because it shows me that they are human, and human brothers. And that human brothers do NOT hug it out every minute and are mean and compulsive and lie to each other...
It's NORMAL.
I can't help to be annoyed over that stupid dog, though. Sorry. I like dogs, but why not let Sam get a nice, shaggy mongrel that runs all through the cake? Why let him have a perfectly-well-behaved pure-bred Australian Shepherd?
*sigh*
Maybe it IS a dream-dog, and a dream-.life, and in reality, Sam had a bitchy girl and a stinking, deaf dog with three legs but in comparison, it was still perfect for him.
(that now makes me feel even worse for poor Sam :-( )

no subject
Date: 2012-10-18 08:20 pm (UTC)Yeah, Sam's flashbacks add a nice contrast to the show.
Jensen, I think, is definitely slowly finding his "style", though, he's of course still working within the confines of the Supernatural style-book. :)
no subject
Date: 2012-10-18 08:28 pm (UTC)Well said. I think that's why I like these sorts of storylines too. Wanting different things in life doesn't mean not loving each other, and that makes for an interesting hurdle.
And that human brothers do NOT hug it out every minute and are mean and compulsive and lie to each other...
Again, I agree completely.
I can't help to be annoyed over that stupid dog, though. Sorry. I like dogs, but why not let Sam get a nice, shaggy mongrel that runs all through the cake? Why let him have a perfectly-well-behaved pure-bred Australian Shepherd?
Haha, because then I'd hate the stupid dog. Speaking as someone who doesn't know what a pure-bred Australian Shepherd looks like: That dog could easily be a mutt to me. Also, it needs to be well behaved, because I highly doubt Sam would put up with it - no matter what he told Amelia, if it weren't... or at least, he'd soon train it to rights.
Maybe it IS a dream-dog, and a dream-.life, and in reality, Sam had a bitchy girl and a stinking, deaf dog with three legs but in comparison, it was still perfect for him.
Well, they DID break up, so obviously Amelia wasn't perfect. And I'm sure even pure bred dogs get into the garbage occasionally. :P

Date: 2012-10-18 08:43 pm (UTC)They're in all kinds of colors, but yeah...
Anyway, it's just... too much perfect, you know? At least what we saw in this ep. I'll just wait and see. I would certainly like for him to HAVE that, though I really doubt he ever can.
He could, better than Dean, I guess, but there is the question: should he really just switch off all his skills, all his knowledge and lie about them to his girl (for her safety, but still) or at least omit them.? Isn't he in some way responsible to use the skills he has?
On the other hand, hasn't he given enough already? When is it enough? Does he have to keep on giving and giving without a reward? What if saving people, hunting things is not the reward he wants?
Interesting outlook. Hope we'll tackle some of it :-)

Date: 2012-10-18 09:06 pm (UTC)I think you've really hit upon the argument. Dean sees hunting as a duty that they HAVE to do. If they don't use their skills and save people, then when people die, it's their fault...
But think about it other skills...like, what if you were a very skilled surgeon. If you went on vacation and while you were on vacation there was a car accident and people died on operating tables - were those deaths your fault? What about people in the towns where you don't live?
The truth of the matter is - as Sam points out - they aren't the only hunters out there. It doesn't have to be down to them to save everyone from the monsters. Sam admits responsibility for Kevin, because Sam was the ONLY hunter who knew about him... but beyond that, I don't think it's Sam's responsibility to save anyone else.
I DO think though, that Sam is remembering Amelia in these flashbacks in a very idealized fantasy way. He's contrasting to where he is now - and he's remembering it with these sort of nostalgic lenses.
I mean, I have an old flame that I always miss greatly and I remember all the great times we had together, and they all seem perfect, and I start wishing that things hadn't ended... and then once every two years or so, I'll see them again and have a visit, and ALWAYS, my reaction is "Oh yeah! Now I remember why I never wanted to date you for serious... and was always happy that the relationship had an end date!" And then I forget again and only remember their good traits and the ways in which we did work.

Date: 2012-10-18 09:36 pm (UTC)But think about it other skills...like, what if you were a very skilled surgeon. If you went on vacation and while you were on vacation there was a car accident and people died on operating tables - were those deaths your fault? What about people in the towns where you don't live?
Yeah, though I'd go a bit further that for Dean, it's not just a duty but a calling. He likes doing that, likes saving strangers and yeah, he sure likes getting his issues out with some stakes or knives.
Sam doesn't.
And for the surgeon (and fitting the Kevin-situation as well): if you're a surgeon on holiday, and there is an accident IN THAT AREA right in front of you and you don't do anything about it...
s
And Sam did that, he didn't even send another hunter on the cases he heard about. He just thought "not my job anymore" and didn't think more of it (or at least, right now it looks like he didn't - we don't know the whole picture yet).
And still, the question is valid: shouldn't he be able to retire and just... stop?
Does he really have to get himself institutionalized (like that hunter in Sam Interrupted) just so he can stop hunting? If so... what a SUCKY life.
And no, it's not his responsibility to hunt every evil that's there. Or Dean's for that matter.
But like with first aid: aren't you responsible for saving a drowning person when you know how to help him? No matter if you are on vacation or even if you don't know or like the person, especially when you're the only one who HAS the skills?
As I said... interesting.
(and don't think that I wouldn't want Sam to have his happy life! I wished it for Dean and was sad it went away, and I do for Sam - though I admit, I liked Lisa more than what I've seen of Amelia yet)

Date: 2012-10-18 09:53 pm (UTC)He'd rather help people without the gore and the horror.
Sorry, I hope that didn't come out completely wrong :-s
no subject
Date: 2012-10-18 09:55 pm (UTC)But yeah, I think that's why Sam might have been looking into universities... he could also help people in a safer, legal, profession too. We know from the pilot that Sam equates "normal" with "safe", so I think that's the crux of the matter.
no subject
Date: 2012-10-18 10:17 pm (UTC)I have also read a theory (*not* a spoiler, just speculation) that Amelia isn't real. BTW, am I the only one stuck on the fact that Sam's girlfriend and Jimmy's wife have the same name? I don't necessarily think there's a connection, I guess I'm just bugged that the writers recycled the name when there are, like, eleventy billion other girl's names they could have used. (Yes, I'm picky, I know).
no subject

I think Amelia IS real. If we only saw her in flashbacks, then I'd put some stock in that theory - but there's the fact that we saw her at the beginning of 8x01 too, when Sam left his/her house. So, I think she's real, though, whether these memories are "real" is another matter altogether.
I do definitely think there's more going on here than meets the eye though - who was that shadowy figure outside the house? Why did Sam go to the cabin? So many questions...

Ok, am I the only one that thinks that Dean got Sam birthday cakes over their childhood?
Sam keeps talking about his year of normal with Amelia, what about his three or so years of normal at Stanford with Jessica?

Date: 2012-10-19 01:46 am (UTC)As a member of my flist pointed out, when Sam was at Stanford he still had John and Dean out there - the constant threat of them either dropping in to make his normal life not normal. This was the first time that he had normal stretching out until death. Now, that might just be an excuse, but I think it stands.
Also, I don't think Sam is forgetting about his year with Jessica. But I think by S4, Sam believed that he would never have normal AGAIN, which is why the year with Amelia is so special to him - it proved that it's still possible.

Date: 2012-10-19 07:20 am (UTC)That is pretty much what Jared's said in the interviews I've seen/read: that this is the first time Sam hasn't had *anything* hanging over his head. But as you say, to what extent that's an excuse (or just Jared's take) remains to be seen. From what Carver's said, we aren't likely to have all the pieces until 8.13--if then.

Date: 2012-10-25 08:03 pm (UTC)Also, I agree about Dean. He...really needs to crash down from whatever high he's surfing. ASAP. Because he's really freaking me out. Sam is also continuing to freak me out with his relative meekness in regards to Dean. GODDAMN IT, SAM, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH YOUR BROTHER. DO NOT CONTINUE TO IGNORE IT, AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Ahem. I did like this episode, I swear. I'm just worried about my boys. :/
