It seems to me like a large part of the season is about Sammy slowly coming out of his own selfish little bubble and realising that he's not the only one who's suffering.
Also true! And you can't blame Sam, because his girlfriend was just horribly murdered, so OF COURSE he feels like he's the only one suffering and no one can understand his pain... but yeah, S1 is very much about him coming out of that fog of grief.
