So very true, there will always be someone out there to make fun of you, and it is an interesting perspective that making fun of yourself is also a form of shame. Hadn't thought of it that way, but there is a lot of truth with that.
It's interesting, all the time growing up I would be embarrassed with myself for my love of TV shows and my increased interest in them, because no one else around me was the same way, and then they would tease me or make fun of me, which just exacerbated my embarrassment. I was always a silent TVaholic, and it was only since becoming involved in the SPN fandom, where I found people of like interest who are the same age as me, or older and younger, from all walks of life, who have families of their own and are professionals in their own right that I started to feel less embarrassed about this particular character trait of mine. So, even though there may be a stigma around fandoms, it is being involved in this fandom that I have become more at ease and comfortable with myself. There may be times when I feel somewhat ill-at-ease with the whole thing, but I know I am more "at ease" than I have been in a very long time.
