When Jared was 18 and starting off in the Gilmore Girls, he read some online reactions that said he looked ugly with his new haircut, and it hurt his feelings. He admits that he was probably being overly sensitive, but also says that being overly emotional sort of comes with the territory of being an actor, and he can't help it.
He also makes a very good point about how he doesn't read fan reactions because he doesn't want them to influence how he plays Sam. He says that technically Sam could have been played by anyone, "younger, older, more black, more white" and that what makes Sam who he is today is the fact that Jared was hired to play him. So, therefore, the best thing he could possibly do for the character is to play him how Jared thinks he should be played, and not how anyone else thinks he should be played.
I don't know if any of this has changed since he's gotten a twitter account...since, we can't actually know whether or not he reads any messages sent to him on his twitter account (besides those of his friends). Now that he's older, I think he might be able to take the criticism better...but at the same time, he seems very firm about the second point.
