Well, you can't tell me that you hate it, or else my heart will be broken and I will start reconsidering friendships. (Seriously, my current oldest friend did this to me in April, and I had to bite my lip to keep from kicking her out of my house.)
It's one of those movies where when people like it, they like it A LOT. And since I DID grow up with it, I can't really tell you whether you have to watch it as a kid or not. I would say that you should probably watch it more than once. But, I don't know what the statistics are for falling in love with it as an adult.
But, I'd understand if you didn't develop an epic love for it. At the age of 20, I saw The Sound of Music for the first time. It was long and boring and the only good part was when the Nazis were after them for two seconds and it was a LITTLE bit suspenseful. When I announced this to the person who showed it to me, it was like I had killed her puppy. So, at the very least, it's good to just nod and say "yeah, good movie" even if you're indifferent to it.
