Well, where I come from (where we actually raise pigs), the proper expression is "a pig in shit". Really! A lot easier to imagine than pigs in shoes.
Guess 'shoes' for 'shit' is like Bobby's "balls' for **** (insert whatever). Maybe they have to give up a vulger expletive for every blood splatter or related gore.
