Anyway, I think that when Dean missed his opportunity of telling Sam why a soul is GOOD to have, he a) wasn't in the state of mind to remember the god things and b) didn't see the point in explaining the warm feeling you get when your world is in order. As you put it: Sam would never GET the pleasure of sitting at the beach.
