I think he would go into Florish and Blotts and go to the Muggle history section, start reading and then begin exlaiming loudly that it was "wrong" or "silly". John would be stood nearby looking in turns embarassed and exasperated and trying to chivvy him away. Sherlock would then get so annoyed he'd leave without buyng anything and proceed to get very distracted by someting in Weasley's Wizard Weezes and buy a fake wand or something similar that he would enjoy leaving around in the flat for John to find, just to see the hilarious expression on his face.
Part of me doesn't think he's buy a potion's kit to actually use because he's egotistical enough to only want to be able to work things out himself, with no influences etc (apart from John and he always guesses what John is going to come up wth anyway). I think he'd buy it just to sit around and work out what makes these combinations so special - how it works. And then he'd annoy his brother by not sharing the findings.
