I think that if it wasn't for JA's acting and the exploration of Dean's psyche...and also the glimpse it finally gave us into how much Sam is equally co-dependent on Dean, I'd have given up on it. I was coming off S2, which I actually hated (I liked S1 WAYYYYYY better... S2 was meh other than the first four episodes after S1 for me) so I was seriously debating sticking it out and S3 and its character developments of Sam's codependency on Dean, of realizing that Sam needed Dean just as much as Dean needed him, and the exploration into Dean's psyche and how little boy and scared shitless Dean really was despite his bravado was totally hitting my hot buttons. I just prefer character exploration over plot and mythological arcs and for me S1 and S3 take the cake.
