I think the 7-season rule is all in your head. I've certainly never heard of it before. Did Lost go 7 seasons or something? Or did Buffy? It might just be a coincidence.
I think as long as your storylines/production value stays strong, you can go however long you like. I also don't think that less seasons is necessarily bad...but then, I tend to lose interest in shows, so it of benefit to me if they have shorter runs. I only watched Torchwood until end S2, and Doctor Who until end S4...like I said, I just lose interest.
I would have been happy if Supernatural ended S5, and I'm also happy it didn't. Yes, ending S5 would have been horribly depressing, but I read this great meta once that explained, using evidence from the show itself, that Supernatural was a classic TRAGEDY, and was destined to end in heartbreak (I read this meta long before the S5 closer, btw). I wish I could find it again, or remember where the hell it was.
