I'm in complete agreement with you. Sam has always been more self-aware. Dean, at first, hid from himself and then decided he wasn't worth crap anyway. Both are wrong, IMHO. Dean is worth a lot. But with him it feels like he thinks he's worth too much (his arrogant self-confidence) or he thinks he's worth too little (either he's full of false self-confidence [with the ladies] or he's berating everything that he is (his confession to Sam about what he did in Hell for one instance).
Sam can achieve a 'happy medium'. Dean seems to always feel an extreme (about himself - he's quick to forgive Sam, Bobby and Cas).
