And yes, I agree with you. It was an extremely well acted and character driven storyline for Sam, whereas Dean and Cas were really the comic relief of the episode - even with the supposedly serious task of trapping an archangel. And I agree, you never really got the sense that Cas was in that much danger.
That being said, I DO understand why Dean brought Cas to a brothel instead of a bar - he needed a sure thing. Not only is it extremely hard to pick someone up on behalf of your friend - it's even harder to get that person to sleep with your friend when your friend is socially inept. So, yeah, when in doubt, throw money at the problem.
