Men of Legend (Merlin/Supernatural) 1/10

Title: Men of Legend
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hells_half_acre
Beta: [livejournal.com profile] borgmama1of5 - my first time ever using a beta. It was interesting! Readers who are usually annoyed by my overuse of the word "said" will rejoice!
Fandoms: Supernatural and Merlin
Rating: PG (Gen/optional pre-slash)
Word Count: 33,935
Setting/Spoilers: This is set between S4 and S5 of Merlin and around S8 of Supernatural (in an undefined fantasy time period where Dean, Sam, and Cas are all available and doing alright.)
A/N: There's about as much merthur slash in this fic as there is in Merlin - which means that technically, it's pre-slash.

Summary: When a sorcerer summons monsters from another world, Merlin must summon heroes from another world to help save Camelot. Meanwhile, Dean and Sam Winchester didn't even know they were summon-able.

Start talking and this sure as hell better be good. )

April Ficlet: Home (Merlin)

Did better on time with this one. Just a little under an hour.

Don't you go,
Away, I know,
Without your love,
I'll never find my way back home

April Ficlet: The Opera House (Merlin)

To kick off my month of ficlets written from the daily prompts at [community profile] daily_prompt , we start with a photography prompt and a very depressing Merlin ficlet that ends rather abruptly.

Yay?

The Opera House
Merlin, post-finale, 697 words.

‘You’d hate this, Arthur,’ Merlin thought )

Leverage - A Series Review

I finally finished watching Leverage last night. So, I figured I'd tell you all what I liked and didn't like about it. Just in case anyone is interested.

For those that don't know, Leverage follows the adventures of a team of ex-thieves, who are technically still thieves - only they're playing Robin Hood now. Each episode is a different heist that leaves some corrupt CEO/Politician/Whoever ruined and the balance (partially) restored to the universe.

Likes, Dislikes etc... )

If any of you do know of good Leverage fic, rec me them in comments! :)

Fic: The Unfortunate Brother: Childhood

Title: The Unfortunate Brother: Childhood (is the Kingdom Where Nobody Dies)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hells_half_acre
Fandoms: Sherlock and Merlin
Rating: PG (Gen)
Word Count: 7,938
Setting/Spoilers: Spoilers for S1-S2 of Sherlock. You don't really have to know anything about Merlin, since I've taken it very AU in this 'verse.
Warnings: Emotional aftermath of a suicide.
A/N: Part of the UnfortunateBrother'verse, it helps if you've read the first part, though it might not be mandatory. Basically, all you need to know is that I've added a third younger Holmes brother to the mix.
A/N #2: Title is from Edna St. Vincent Millay
A/N #3: I was going to wait until S3 of Sherlock before I wrote anything else in this 'verse, but I got impatient. I tried to keep things vague enough so that they'll hopefully fit into whatever we're told happened between S2-S3. If it ends up being vastly different though, I'll just come back an re-write. :P
A/N #4: I jump back and forth between different parts of the past and the present, without announcing where you are in the timeline...hopefully it's fairly easy to figure out though and not too jarring.
A/N #5: Only moderately brit-picked, so please let me know if there are any glaring errors.

Summary: The problem with Tug of War is that it's never really about the rope.

You hated him because he was a bright light that could see into your darkest corners. In front of him you were laid bare, vulnerable, with every weakness and secret shame exposed. )

Off to America...

I'm heading off to the Seattle area for the weekend to visit family. I leave tomorrow.

Just thought I would mention it in case anyone needed to get in touch with me urgently in the next few days... or in case anyone in the Seattle area wanted to meet up for coffee! Who knows!

Completely unrelated:

Last night I had a dream that I picked up Christian Kane on the Toronto subway. I have no idea where that came from, but I had to laugh at myself, because upon waking my first thoughts weren't about Christian Kane, instead I was like "Wow, I haven't been to Toronto in AGES. I don't even think I've ridden that section of the subway line since 2006!"

Speaking of Leverage - I'm still only midway through S4, but I hear the finale was awesome and I've been a bit spoiled for it (but that's okay). It  looks like I might find it awesome as well - so I'm looking forward to getting there. Also, after watching 3.5 seasons, I have now grown used to Kane's batman-voice.

More Merlin Reaction

Sorry,  I'll shut-up after this, I swear...

But I think I've figured out what my problem is with the finale, and it's actually a problem with the entire direction of S5....

Basically, they got it completely wrong... )

Quick Reaction: Merlin - Part 1 of Finale

Just a couple of points...

Hidden here for those who don't care )

Preview for next week: So, yeah, looks like Merlin definitely says the words for the reveal. Morgana is defeated. Gwen takes the throne of Camelot...and therefore Arthur truly does die? Sad times. I really want a reincarnation ending if we get a death. It's supposed to be a kid's show, they should leave us with hope!

I'll definitely be posting something on Monday after I watch the finale. And then at some point in the new year, I'll add another chapter to my gigantic Merlin (Merlin/Arthur) Meta.

Also, I've got 15,000 words written of a Merlin/Supernatural crossover (emphasis on Merlin), so that will also be going up at some point in the new year.

Good News about Merlin! (some of which might be seen as bad news by others)

It's officially Merlin's last season! There are only 5 episodes left, two of which will be a two-part finale... so really, arguably, four episodes left, and then nothing more. It'll be interesting and it's what I wanted, so I'm happy.

More thoughts on that. )

In other good Merlin-related news: I read through what I had written so far of my Merlin/Supernatural crossover and....

IT'S NOT AS BAD AS I THOUGHT! :D

It's actually....it's actually kind of good? Well, I mean, opinions might vary - but *I* enjoyed it. I've written some more of it...and I can tell I like it, because I stopped writing it to make dinner and then just kept writing it in my head while I grated my potato and cut up my broccoli and washed my dishes... and then when I sat back down at my computer I realized that they really needed to develop a technology that let you type with your brain...or I guess I need voice-typing software or something and then I need to train myself to talk outloud while I'm writing things in my head.

I'm still not too sure if it's going to have any sort of epic point to either storyline or if it's just going to be the equivalent of a MOTW episodes (or Magical Assassination Plot Of The Week as the case may be for Merlin)...but hopefully even if it is, it'll still be FUN TIMES.

I've got nearly 7,000 words and they haven't even started hunting the monsters yet...so, I'm not sure when this beast will be done. I might actually want to wait until Merlin ends to see if I can weave in any awesome foreshadowing for the fun of it. (I'm assuming that everyone is going to die at the end of Merlin as per Arthurian legend...though, Merlin IS the high school/college AU of Arthurian legend, so who knows.)

Let's talk about Merlin again...

So, the last time I talked about Merlin was after 5x04. I think the episode I just watched was 5x08? 5x07? I can't remember. Anyway, there have been a bunch of episodes, and we're more than half-way through the season now...

in which I blather about mostly this episode )

I'm looking forward to next week. Looks like it's going to be Merthur-tastic with a side of Arwen.

ETA: I'm heading out for the evening, but I'll be back later to chat in comments with anyone wishing to!

No show tonight...

...so instead you just get me blathering...

Fanfiction Month so far has been a bit of a disappointment. I've only written ONE THING. I mean, in fairness, I am working full time and I'm trying to knit my sister a pair of slippers (which I've had to start over at least 4 times for various reasons....but when I am finished them, they will be the awesomest slippers that ever warmed my sister's feet.) So, yeah, Fanfiction Month might become Fanfiction TWO Months - and I'll write more in December or something. There were two prompts at the meme over at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam that I thought I could combine into some h/c p-p ("p-p" is my new short form for "porn without porn" since PWP would mislead people entirely...though, there wouldn't be plot either. So, it'd be "(p-p)wp" WHY DON'T WE JUST USE OUR WORDS!)

I also have the Supernatural/Merlin crossover to re-write and finish. The problem with that one is that I'm still really not sure what the point of the story is. It's shaping up to be more of a Merlin story (set between Merlin S4 and S5, and post-S6 of Supernatural); yet, I don't have a huge climatic "there's a lesson here for all of us" moment.

I really want to write more in my Merlin-Sherlock crossover 'verse, but I STILL have to wait until S3 of Sherlock and apparently the earliest that's going to happen is Fall 2013, so yeah..sigh. Sherlock is worth the wait, but, my god, it's a long wait.

I kind of want to write an S7-S8 AU where Sam and Cas have a one-way (or is it?!) psychic connection... but again, I'm not sure where I would go with it.

In non-Fanfiction stuff...

Merlin is still new this Saturday. I might blather about the new episode and the past few episode again on here - since I'll probably have excess energy saved up from not talking about Supernatural. We'll see. We're past the midway point in the season, but still fairly far from the end. I'm one of the few fans (it seems) who actually really wants them to end the show this year. Not because it's not awesome (for what it is), but just because I think they've done all they can do with it, and it's better to go out with a bang than a whimper. (That what T.S. Eliot was trying to tell us, right? How to end our TV shows?)

Anyway... how are you guys?

Quick Reaction: Merlin 5x04

I kind of want to talk about Merlin on here, but I don't - because I feel like all you guys just care about Supernatural and you kindly put up with my Sherlock posts and asking you to put up with Merlin too would be TOO MUCH.

But then I realized that this is my LJ, and I can do what I want!

So, MERLIN! (behind a cut, because of spoilers for 5x04)

The gayest show I watch has given me my first het-ship. How is this possible? )

Anyway, do any of you watch Merlin? If so, what were your thoughts?

(I'm not going to do this every week. I just felt like actually talking about Merlin today - and I didn't want to do it on tumblr, because I suck at using tumblr.)

Leverage and some random things...

Although Tumblr has been doing its best to get me to watch Teen Wolf, I promised that Leverage would be the next series that I try out.

Leverage!

I've watched the first episode. I could do without Christian Kane's batman voice - but I like the show! I developed a small crush on Aldis Hodge when I saw him at VanCon2010...and I knew a little about his character (or at least his character's speciality). I was picturing his character a little differently - less stereotypically black, I guess. I'm not sure if that makes the show racist, or it makes me racist....maybe both? ETA: Okay, he seems to have toned it down to a more realistic (to me) level in the second episode. Kane still has a batman voice though.

Anyway, like I said, I do like the show so far and I'm looking forward to seeing more....which I'm going to do, right after I finish typing this entry.

Random thought about Black Widow (from the Avengers)

So, on the plane back to Vancouver, I watched The Avengers again. The first time I watched it, I ended up with two questions concerning Black Widow: 1)What is her special weapon?...everyone has a special weapon, except seemingly her. Those two small pistols can't possibly count! 2)Why do I find her so awesome?

Turns out, there is one answer for both questions. What I like about Black Widow is the fact that her special weapon is whatever her enemy's special weapon is. She takes whatever the enemy has and turns it back on them. She interrogates her interrogators. Watch her in a fight, and within fifteen seconds, she'll have her enemies weapon in her hand and will be using it to beat the shit out of them. When she needs a ride to Stark tower, she not only uses an alien ship, she uses the alien riding it as her own personal puppet. She shuts off the portal with Loki's staff (granted, he dropped it when fighting Hulk, but still, it's Natasha who uses it to cut off his reinforcements. Anyway, I think that's pretty cool. Her resources are her enemies resources, so she's always on an even playing field...except, of course, when it comes to someone like the Hulk, who terrifies her.

Sherlock - The Great Game rewatch progress report:

This one is going to be longer than my A Study in Pink rewatch, folks. Start bracing yourselves now. I'm halfway through and I'm honestly afraid to do a word count.

Merlin Meta: Arthur and Merlin's Friendship S1-S4 (Part 1)

This meta comes in two parts, because it's 10,700 words.

(To be fair though, I used 14,000+ words for ONE Sherlock episode, and this Merlin meta is covering S1-S4, so I think I've done quite well with not being too wordy.)

The Legend of Korra

I just finished watching S1 of The Legend of Korra.

For those not in the know, The Legend of Korra is a "spin-off" of Avatar: The Last Airbender. And by "spin-off" I mean "a separate and unique story placed 70 years after the events of A:TLA."

As for my review, well, let's just say: The writing and characters are so good that every other show you've ever seen pales in comparison (even the ones that you really really love). Okay, that might sound like too much praise...but seriously, it's SO GOOD. A:TLA/Korra and Sherlock are currently the best things written for TV in my opinion. I consider them equal in awesomeness.

There's very little to complain about...a few fart jokes that are obviously for the younger crowd, a finale resolution that might seem a bit deus ex machina if you are unfamiliar with the universe. But that's really it....oh, and it was a LITTLE weird to have a voice-actor from A:TLA voice a (related) character in Korra too, but it WAS nice to hear the voice again, so I can see why they made that decision. (It helped that it was the voice of my favourite character in A:TLA).

For those feminists amongst you (which, frankly, should be all of you), if you HAVEN'T watched A:TLA and Korra, you are missing out on what I think are the best female characters on television. No one has come close to writing women as well as the A:TLA writers do....they also really have a knack for heartbreaking father-son story lines, I have to say.

So, yeah, I won't go into detail about spoilers and whatnot...but geez...such a good show.

For those who haven't seen A:TLA and/or Korra YOU SHOULD! Also, there might be spoilers in the comments here, so be careful.

For those who have seen it - OH MAN! GUYS! IT WAS SO GOOD WASN'T IT? Being back in that universe makes me miss the original characters like burning, but it also made me fall in love with new characters and want to see more of them too!

I have to go purchase the complete Avatar: The Last Airbender on DVD now. It's blasphemy that I have not thrown more money at these people yet. Lord knows, once Korra's complete, I'll be buying that complete set as well.

The Barren Waste Land of Extremely Specific Kinks

I don't normally post about the porny delicious side of fic, mainly because I don't write it, and secondly because my mum reads this journal.

So, I will kindly ask my mother not to click on the cut text, even though she probably will anyway...but at least this way I can pretend that she didn't...

Kinks: I have them. Some might consider them weird, but I consider them awesome. )

Merlin Edit Project

So...I've been re-editing Merlin. Don't ask me why....I'm mainly just trying to distill the episodes down to their essentials, so that when I decide to do a rewatch I won't have to sit through filler - even the filler within none-filler episodes. Of course, what constitutes filler all depends on what storyline I'm following. Like the good Merthur shipper that I am, I'm choosing the Merlin+Arthur friendship. Most episodes I've only cut from 45 minutes to 30-35 minutes - so, obviously I'm being very generous. Though, I've only done the first 5 episodes and there is way more Merlin+Arthur time in those.

Cut for spoilers, just in case )
